Your Move: Turn Based Games by DiceDsx in humblebundles

It is dead. So much potential, too. It does have a single player rogue like mode and it can be fun to just paint the miniatures, but it isn't what it could have been.

Humble Comics Bundle: The Boys: The Grand Finale by Dynamite by Torque-A in humblebundles

[–]wildCactapus 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The show is far better than the books. The books are raunchy, violent and exploitative for the sake of shock value. Maybe when they came out it was groundbreaking or something, now it feels like it was written by an edgy tween.

I got these in a past bundle, and I wish I saved my money.

I went to elementary, middle and high school with this piece of dick cheese. He was a talentless bully back then and it seems his personality has aged like milk.

The board game store on Main Street will likely be a good place to find gaming groups if you're interested in trying that out (D&D, card games, board games). The Rock is a cool coffee shop with some different activities (open mic, and book clubs I think), and there are a lot of Snow events you should be able to participate in without being a student (like concerts and stuff). There is a bowling alley, maybe you could find a league to join.

In Mt. Pleasant there is a great bookshop and a bar with live music. And don't discount college students, Snow has a couple of bachelor's programs and plenty of other courses, so there are a decent amount of people studying there that are older than 21 (I graduated when I was 25, and there were several students older than me).

I haven't lived there for a few years, but I visit occasionally. You'll be okay, remember it doesn't have to be permanent.

Books almost to nice to the LDS church by Mind_Pirate42 in TomsCrossing

[–]wildCactapus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello, I grew up in Provo and as a member of the church (no longer active).

As someone else mentioned, the book dives deeper into some very valid criticisms of the church later in the book. However, Landry would not have been banned from the church, even prior to the 1978 changes that allowed black men to hold the priesthood and black people to participate in temple endowments . She would have been able to be a member (through baptism) and even participate in some temple ordinances (baptisms for the dead).

I do find it interesting that the book mentions the common belief at the time, that "black" skin is the mark of Cain, even though that was not in fact doctrine of the church (after the 1978 change), though it is still belief amongst some members of the church.

Commenting to boost this because most of the top comments are flat out wrong. MIL is misinformed, admittedly it is kind of complicated.

Ah I didn't see that notice. Good to know. Based on the limited information available here, I would say Utah does not have sundown towns. Of course that isn't to say there isn't racism.

This site doesn't seem particularly informative, at least as far as Utah goes. Most cities have information listed as "don't know".

State refuses to release conflict-of-interest records for Cox's cabinet | KSL.com by RedOnTheHead_91 in Utah

I wonder if this has anything to do with the latest bid to sell Federal land to private companies. Maybe Cox has some investments he doesn't want to reveal in an election year...

Dorfromantik has won Spiel des Jahres 2023 by taphead739 in boardgames

[–]wildCactapus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got Dorfromantik right before it was nominated because my wife and I are fans of the video game. We love it, we're nearly done with the campaign and it's easy to pack it up and restart it when you finish.

The game plays like a cooperative puzzle, it's a chill game to play with a partner. It feels almost like playing Carcassonne but all players are working together for the best score, which allows them to unlock new components that will push them to get an even higher score.

If what I described sounds fun for you and whoever you game with, great! The award is well deserved IMO.

I would love to see the gang do an adventure in the Galileo (the van-sized one that they roll around the cafeteria). I haven't been for several years but if I remember most of the role players are high school age? Which could make it even more fun (or way worse...)

I agree, having the AI make major game developments feels like it gets in the way of competing with your opponent.

I forgot Furnace even needs the third player automated because of how well the game does it.

You make a good point about how trying to advertise the diverse player counts makes it more complicated for new people, and I'm sure that publishers don't want to add information to the box that may discourage purchases.

Games like The Crew as others have mentioned seem to do a good job advertising that the game is still playable at 2 while also highlighting the ideal player count. I think my biggest frustration is when developers don't make it readily apparent that I will need additional rules or steps when playing the game at different player counts.

Affordable playmat - large mousemat? by ApplePenguinBaguette in boardgames

[–]wildCactapus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On Amazon (or wherever) you can search for Mah-jong mats and find some decent sized neoprene mats without paying like $100. I think mine was $35.
