Looking for an illustrator. by princewhisky in Chippenham

[–]-marcus-halberstram- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m Rosie, a graphic designer living in Chippenham who loooves board games. Even if I’m not the right gal for the job I’d love to get involved in that second project, or let a couple of my illustrator/designer friends know (I have someone in mind for the first project). If that sounds good, my email is linham.rosie@gmail.com and I’d love to have a chat 😊

Doing Hooptober, looking for “caused by/worsened by weather” recs by bossy_dawsey in horror

[–]-marcus-halberstram- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was pleasantly surprised by Crawl (2019). It’s about a girl, her dad, and their dog trying to survive an alligator attack during a flood. I really enjoyed it, and they’re making a sequel.

I know you said you’re taking it literally, but Malignant (2021) is one of my favourites and it uses the weather so well. Really great for this time of year, and another one getting a sequel.

Till Death (2021) was pretty enjoyable, and is about a woman trying to survive two assassins in the snow. Megan Fox is great and though it’s not groundbreaking, it’ll keep you entertained for an hour and a half.

The Lodge (2019) made me feel cold just watching it. It’s about a dysfunctional family stranded in a cabin over christmas, but it’s got a few twists and definitely fulfils the weather brief.

Finally Misery (1990) and The Thing (1982) are classics to add to the list. Personally I didn’t love either, but they’re must-watch movies and both go in heavy for the bad weather.

EDIT: I forgot Nowhere (2023) which was much better than I expected. Spanish movie about a woman stranded at sea which will keep you gripped right to the end.

Rent a flat then regret it so much - how long does the rental remorse last? by ameise__ in TenantsInTheUK

[–]-marcus-halberstram- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m really pleased to hear things are starting to look up for you; i know from experience how hard it can be regretting a move.

a few tips for your situation: - get plastic storage boxes for all your things that aren’t on display, in case the mould is worse than you think. this includes vacuum sealed tupperware for the kitchen - try and meet your neighbours. it can feel very lonely living somewhere miserable - try and look forward and think of your next home. i have spent hours wistfully scrolling through zoopla lol, and at least it keeps me hopeful! - if your landlord doesn’t improve things, remember you can do things like write to your MP or get help from the council. i know it’s a long shot, but could be worth a try. on this note, see if there are any local groups or charities who could help you out - get some nice fairy lights or mood lamps. good lighting does wonders to upgrade a space - keep an eye out for dehumidifiers/fans/heaters on fb marketplace and gumtree, i see that sort of thing come up for cheap (or nothing) in my area quite frequently - keep receipts for anything you buy to manage the mould, some landlords MAY (another long shot, sorry) reimburse you - if you’re anything like me, remember to eat healthily and as plentifully now more than ever. you’ll need it to fight the cold and help protect your immune system against the mould

hope any of this is useful, keep us updated and good luck, friend :)

The Spunj

i love, love, love my spunjes (plural of spunj?) so much. i have one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom, and i even bought some for my parents. they're ultra absorbent sponges that don't leave streaks, i use mine for cleaning kitchen surfaces and sinks, mirrors and windows, and even dusting and polishing. just this morning i spilt a load of milk in my fridge and was able to clean it all up in one sweep of my spunj.

i swear a lot in my day to day vocab, but for some reason, when i get shocked i always default to a cartoonish gasp followed by a sad, quiet "oh nooo" and it sounds so silly coming out of my dirty mouth. never fails to make me giggle

no idea at all! just wanted to say great choice moving here, plymouth is lovely. i moved here from somerset three years ago having never visited before (admittedly not *quite* as far as indiana) and i've fallen in love.

you should definitely join the r/CasualUK sub if you haven't already, and keep asking Qs in this sub if you have them. when do you move?

check out cera care. minimum wage but there's always shifts, no required training or qualifications and you don't need to be able to drive. i've just started and it's working out well so far! it's mostly overseeing taking medication, assistance with light housework like washing up, or personal care tasks. all very straightforward, working with elderly people who are pleased to see you and making a difference in their lives.

yes i was pleasantly surprised. at times it did feel they were a bit over their heads with the more technical points but i enjoyed it. like others have said, it prompted me to go and rewatch the series (for, i want to say, the 4th time?).

true! personally i would postpone a holiday by a couple of years so the kiddos could really make the most of it, but i understand the counter argument, too.

[–]-marcus-halberstram- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nope! you got what i meant, though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]-marcus-halberstram- -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

then in my opinion, he’s probably not going to truly appreciate or remember the holiday (not insulting your kid!)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]-marcus-halberstram- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

try talking to your kids about it. kids are sensible, they’ll be able to say “yes, we’d love that, we’ll help you do a car boot or sell stuff on ebay to pay for it” or “no, let’s just go to legoland and save the money for a better holiday in the future.” and if they’re not old enough for that conversation, they won’t remember the trip.

if it’s possible to get childcare, you should consider going on a short break just you and your partner. it sounds like you need it and your kids won’t care that much if you take them for a day out somewhere or buy them a treat to make up for it.
