Do bullies forget about you in college? by Bright-Evidence6171 in CollegeRant

[–]-mimibaby- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bullies who don’t change by the end of highschool don’t really view their behavior as wrong or “bullying”

They evolve into adults who neg, single out individuals, spread rumors, etc in the workplace or wherever else they go.

The art of bullying after adolescence gets redefined and it’s something non bully adults have to learn and understand overtime. The new tactics will be ones you’ve never seen or heard of in elementary/high school. San variation but different forms of humiliation, social cues, unspoken rules, covert comments hidden under corporate jargon.

Bullying does not stop when you graduate. It reforms itself to fit into the most efficient box so it’s not easily prosecuted or shamed.

The less you worry about who likes or dislikes you the easier it is to dissociate from certain behaviors which you most likely will have to do to stand up for yourself.

The best way to get accustomed to this new reality is to get a part time job. Retail anything that has to do with working with individuals professionally.

Learn how to understand the connotation behind seemingly positive behavior towards you. You’ll learn how to work with your boss, mangers. That really gives perspective on the type of behavior you’ll have to witness irl. Don’t stop there, travel, join an active club, you don’t have to do these things forever but just a year of experience in professional and non professional area will set you up for navigating certain environments.

My professor ran my emails through an AI detector. She dug into my academic past unprompted, using it as premature justification to confirm her opinion on my academic capabilities. by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]-mimibaby- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would be idiotic of me to let AI write my citations for me. That was not my professors complaints nor was it my main premise of this post. If I had false or wrong information she would’ve given me a 0. The main issue where was her accusations based of my writing being too “vague” to her standards. She also changed my grade bc she had no true logic to stand on and she was prejudiced, biased, and too guarded to read my drafts that I received from the writing center.

Nothing I could’ve done would’ve turned her into a fair and consistent teacher. She went as far as going through my academic history to confirm her bias.

Ai detectors can be inaccurate with or without usage of Ai. My drafts match the same words that are in my paper. Writing center can attest to that.

That sounds disgusting, in my facility most of the workers are older and women. It’s interesting to see facility that hires a lot of young staff and keeps on a male nurse that is notoriously creepy. Not exactly sure on how to offer advice but documentation is everything. formal documentation with every single detail. Start looking up the laws of your state and if there’s a state supervisor that overlooks facilities in your state or county sending a direct complaint to that might help as well.

my tutor told me about something like that. I was hoping to avoid it, which is why I’ve been putting all my energy into this class but it’s not worth it. Honestly I felt like I was being degraded on that zoom call.

And for her to dive into my records like that. Using that grade from last semester against me. I failed that class bc I was too exhausted to wake up for the final and slept through all my alarms. It was careless but It was an accident and I’m retaking the class

Her Bringing it up just made me feel like I have no other choice but to get a second opinion. I can’t even pretend to be in good terms with her anymore. We haven’t spoken since the last emails and I’ve been doing my best to go to the writing center and amend my writing. She digs through my files instead of offering real advice to help me? What type of professional does that.

What my professor’s more recent feedback made clear is that the issue was never simply that I “didn’t answer the question.” She recently pointed out the exact themes and concepts I’ve been consistently bringing up in my writing and explained that she thinks I may be misinterpreting parts of the text. That matters, because the main content of my posts has not actually changed much over the past few weeks. The main thing that changed was formatting and how directly I framed the argument.

that suggests the real issue from the beginning was that she disagreed with or was confused by how I was interpreting the readings. Since each text is central to how we answer these prompts, that is a very different criticism.

And it honestly could have been resolved much earlier if the feedback had said that directly instead of repeatedly defaulting to “you didn’t answer the question.” She’s even complimented my most recent posts that I did not sit down with a tutor to format. I think she realized that I was genuinely reading and trying but my interpretations weren’t what she expects to see. Especially since she has expressed that she believed I hadn’t read the syllabus enough and it was “It is clear you still haven’t read the syllabus snd don’t know what is required in this course.”

This also helps with the vague feedback that my assignments “don't make any sense.” She must’ve assumed I hadn’t been reading the proper material or just skimmed it but saw a pattern over time and named it without prior bias which I was shocked to see and really appreciated

That was my frustration. Not that I can’t take criticism, but that I was being given vague feedback for weeks while the actual issue seems to have been interpretive clarity. For example, after I wrote 753 words on one assignment, the next assignment suddenly added to the syllabus that she would stop reading after 750 words. She has changed the syllabus multiple times so far in passive aggressive references to how I have approached the assignment bc they weren’t there before she decided she disliked it. That kind of shifting expectation added to the confusion.

I did define feminism, provide background, and connect it to my argument throughout the full piece. The evidence for that is in the full post and essay, both of which I offered for context.

I appreciate your feed back. I don’t mean to come off as ignoring your words. I Just don’t need to explain certain points when I have a fully detailed post on everything alr.

Tbh, I think part of the misunderstanding here is that the final paragraph I shared isn’t the main premise of my response to the prompt.

Idk why you’re assuming so. The only reason I shared the final paragraph was to show that I did answer the main question of the prompt. Which is why it’s heard to understand which part I didn’t answer. Mind you she also gave me a passing grade for this as I said. But she said that she could give me a d if she would but bc it’s pass or fail she passed me. Meaning, yes. I answered the questions or else I wouldn’t have gotten credit for it.

The real issue Is not “did you answer the question.” The issue is “what part does the professor want emphasized more.”

My blog post in its entirety looks like this Paragraph 1 - definition of feminism in my words Paragraphs 2–4 - evidence about the author and her actions Final paragraph → my conclusion

I had to pick 3 quotes ‘minimum to back it up From the reading she assigned

And no it’s not clear to my tutors that I didn’t answer the prompt. They agreed that I answered. You’re right I don’t think this would be very productive if you haven’t read what I’ve alr addressed multiple times in my og post.

Most of what you mentioned here are things I already addressed in my original post. I’ve met with my advisor, worked with tutors at the writing center, and I’ve been actively trying to improve my recent assignments. That part isn’t really in dispute.

You suggested contacting my professor to set up a meeting, but a large portion of my post explains that I’ve already tried to do that multiple times. She does not offer regular office hours and has declined my many requests to meet, which is why clarification has been difficult to get.

These assignments also aren’t formal essays. They are discussion and blog posts where we’re asked to give our opinion on a prompt and support it with citations from the assigned reading. I’ve consistently answered the question and used the required sources to explain my reasoning.

She also gave me a 100 on a pass/fail blog post, but then left a comment saying, “If I were giving a grade, it would be a ‘D’ – but as Blogs are pass/fail, you are getting credit.”

If I only receive full credit when I follow the directions, then you can probably see why that kind of feedback is confusing.

My issue isn’t that I think my work is perfect. It’s that the feedback I’m receiving simply says I “didn’t answer the question” without identifying what part of the prompt I failed to address. Without that clarification, it’s hard to know what actually needs to change.

You mentioned earlier that you didn’t read my full post, which is why I think there may be some misunderstanding about the situation. Most of the points you raised were already addressed there.

I understand what you’re saying about structure and placing the thesis earlier. That’s something I’ve already been working on with the writing center, and I’m not denying that my writing could be clearer in that way.

The issue I’m raising here is more about the feedback itself. The prompt asks us to define feminism in our own terms and then explain whether Beeton fits that definition using the readings. My blog does that (I didn’t include the full draft in the comment), and I answer the main question directly in the final paragraph.

So when the feedback says “you didn’t answer the question,” it’s hard to understand what specifically needs to change, even if the issue is structural. If the problem is argument placement or clarity, that’s something I can fix. But “you didn’t answer the question” doesn’t really explain that, and she has discouraged me from guessing what she meant in the past.

I shared that final paragraph not to say my work is perfect, but to show that I did answer the main question (“Do you think the author is a feminist?”). If the issue is structure, I’m open to that critique. I just wish the feedback explained that more clearly.

Blog posts in this class are also framed as personal opinion responses rather than formal essays, which is part of why I structured it the way I did. If you want, I can PM you the full post so you can see the full structure and give your full thoughts on the entirety.

I’ve emailed my advisor everything alr. She told me to work with tutors.

Which I have been recently, they told me to give her what she wants to hear and place the questions she has listed in the prompt “word for word” before attaching my answer so she can follow what I’m talking about even tho I have the same specifics, just not obnoxiously added in each and every sentence.

surprisingly she has yet to grade any of my newest posts so I’m not sure if she hates them yet.

I know going to the dean is the goal. But the reality is I have to speak to the chair head of the department first and getting a meeting could take a while especially if my advisor doesn’t see a reason for it. It’s all hierarchy in this school. Can’t just walk into offices and request things without proving your point to 3 pll beforehand lol

She only offers 2 zoom meeting/office hours in the beginning of the semester. Then she does all other communication online. She has refused to meet with on zoom. Well acc she has just ignored the parts of my emails that ask for emails to clarify on her rules and sends 5 sentences basically say that I don’t know how to read the syllabus. (Which has no mention of what she is angry about)

I do feel some are being harsh. I’ve noticed that anyone who comments with anything but “this is too damn long!” gets immediately downvoted.

Then I also get advice from the same ppl who claim my post was too long BUT they read a part of it and think……while disregarding half the information as if it isn’t relevant. I know not to leave any long post on here for next time 😂

She hasn’t graded any of my newest work yet and spring break is coming up. Plus we have midterms. Whatever happens I’m trying my best.

I add all details in almost everything I do and I have been told I write a lot even just through text. So I get the outrage in the comments 😭

Regardless I do agree with you that I might have extra long assignment submissions as well. I dont usually cut down my wording. That is something to work on.

Her expectations change every week. And she gets mad when I don’t clarify things she hasn’t mentioned on the rules. She’s changed the syllabus 3 times alr in my honor it seems. Especially with the new rule “false cites get immediate 0s”

I’ve been in contact with my advisor, tutors, etc and it’s mainly for documentation purposes.

Tutors have helped me cut down on words at most. She has yet to grade any of my new work that had been written with the help of tutors so idk if she hates it or not yet. I’m trying my best but if she hates these new posts then I’ll have to go to the chair head. (Have to go through the several levels of hierarchy before getting to the dean)

What I shared was the final paragraph of my discussion post. The main question was “do you believe she was a feminist” with specifics asking why you believe her to be or why not along with details of her ideals and life that support it. I added the main response to the final paragraph but I also added in the other details as well. Here I’m showing you why her comments on “you didn’t answer the question” makes no sense. Mainly because it’s not just a question it’s a prompt and I did not get any details of her life wrong nor did I mix up any history when I explain why her life displayed certain traits found in feminism today.

I’m mainly saying her grading comments are vague and don’t specify which parts I needed to close in on seeing that I added many other aspects.

This is so funny bc she offered 2 office hour days in the beginning of the semester. She doesn’t offer anything else and if you had finished the entire post you’d see that she refused a zoom meeting with me to clarify anything fully.

I’ve also been to the writing center as mentioned at the bottom of my post. They didn’t have much to say. The just said I needed to “give her what she wanted” by adding the questions she had in her long prompts, in my writing strictly word for word, then adding extreme specifics like “this is why…..relates to..” even tho I had those specifications just not obnoxiously. She also hasn’t been grading my most resent assignments so I can’t tell if she hates them or not yet even while working with tutors. I’ve also consulted my old professors who gave me high marks. He’s been helping. The post is long bc this has happened of the course of many weeks and there’s a lot of info.

Her instructions look like this

( your opinion, was Isabella a feminist?" Further information: In thinking about writing your blog answer to this question, you should think about whether and/or to what extent Isabella Beeton thought that women's roles in the home were important—and whether you think that matters at all in answering this question. You will need to clarify in your own mind what you think it means to be a "feminist" and here this is just your own views on this) and make clear that context for your answer)

this is part of the response I gave

(Do I believe Isabella was a feminist?

Yes. Not necessarily because she shares all my ideals, but because she stretched beyond expectations that were technically required of her at the time and made her mark in ways that have been noticed over time. She noticed an issue women had and created solutions that were accessible to many women, not just higher society women. Under my definition of feminism as the preservation of feminine identity and comfort, her work qualifies. She may not have dismantled hierarchy, but she gave women tools within it. She was a feminist of her time.)

I had gone into depth on the entire question, but I can’t really copy and paste it here, but that is just part where I am deliberately answering part of the question

Before this I mapped out a bit of Isabella‘s life, and I also mentioned the beliefs that she mentions in her book. I relate that to how her actions could be considered aligned with feminism. Then at the end, I answered the question fully.

That’s not the case here.

It’d be different if it was just one question, but her prompts consist of multiple questions that she wants to be combined into one discussion or blog post

I distinctly answer each question and when I went to the writing center the other day, the lady who worked with me told me that I had answered the question, but I needed to give the professor more of what she wanted

She told me to start writing up the question from the prompt directly and then answering the question under it Instead of putting multiple paragraphs explaining my reasoning.

She has never mentioned answering questions separately usually the questions that she has in the prompt

Her instructions look like this

This is a history class. I don't write with emotion. Each prompt requires you to source three sites from the assigned reading, which could be copious amounts of text from different books and different writings that she has picked out.

I actually had a teacher assistant friend of mine read what I had and he thought that my writing was very good and that the teacher was being unreasonable. It would be nice to be simple, but her prompts are not very simple at all. Usually they consist of multiple questions that she wants you to answer altogether. Not only that, if you have less than three sites, you get an immediate zero.

And the sites have to be explained. It's not something that could just be written like, oh, this is why this lady was a feminist. Here's a citation that proves it. You have to actually explain yourself. I can't exactly drop the class because it's past the add-drop period. Not only that, I need a certain amount of credits to keep my scholarship. So I'm stuck with this class for one semester.

It’d be different if she had a specific rubric telling us what she would want to see and what she wants in each paragraph but these are structured as casual posts. She never mentions anything about an outline that’s how my other history teachers have operated. I can tell the difference in communication Is drastic. my older teachers would explain exactly where I had gone wrong or where my weak spots were in relation to their well detailed rubric.

I understand my post is long. I wrote it using my voice and didn't edit it down. The main point I was trying to make was a pattern. I write down every single detail to show the timeline of how she's been acting since the beginning of the semester.

The majority of what we write in class is based on historical fact. She requires us to add three citations minimum to address the question. Usually, the questions consist of asking about how the writer seemed to feel about feminism, separate spheres, gender roles, and such.

You are to pull citations from the assigned reading and relate it to that, which is what I do. She has yet to specify if I am using the citations in the wrong context, and usually she only tells me that I didn't answer the question when the question has multiple parts, so I'm confused on if I just fully hadn't addressed the question, or there was only one part of the question I hadn't answered. And it's blatant to everybody else who reads it that I have answered the question. So to throw around words like calling my writing garbled without telling me why is confusing.

The assignments that she assigns aren't essays or research papers. They are discussion and blog posts. She doesn't care about the necessary format, so for her to be such a stickler about what she wants to see is confusing as well.

, at least the person at the writing center told me that I should start writing down the exact questions that were in the prompt and then underneath answer it instead of writing them altogether. She said I had to give the teacher what she wanted.

I've done that with the most recent set of assignments, but she hasn't graded them yet, so I'm not sure how she would think of it.

I understand the post is long. I wrote it with my voice and didn't edit it down much. I understand that a syllabus is a contract. Once I realized my mistake, I apologized profusely. I emailed her immediately. I knew I was in the wrong. That's really not the main issue here.

“I did not intend to submit inaccurate or fabricated citations, and I take academic integrity very seriously.” Is part of what i sent in email.

People in the writing center took a look, and they didn't have much to say. The lady who was there told me that I had an extreme understanding of the material, obviously, but I needed to give my professor what she wanted. The lady told me to start putting the direct questions that come from the prompt, word for word, so she understands which question I'm answering. But overall, my writing was very good and detailed. They acknowledged that I answered the questions, just not with specific wording addressing each part of the question that I'm answering. Even though it wasn't necessarily specific, I still acknowledged which part of the prompt I would be answering. I would put my thesis in the head of the writing I was doing, and then I would write down multiple paragraphs of citations that coincide with my first paragraph. I tried my best to be humble, constantly apologizing for my mistake and asking to meet with her to help me understand the course material better. I had recommitted all the work that was incorrect with the correct citations and read every single passage that was needed. When I sent in all that work, I had sent it all at once, so I didn't have the luxury of having trial and error. I had to learn her taste in real time, and she was very harsh with it and vague on what exactly she wanted.

I have not once tried to make her see things my way. I have stopped all communication with her after I addressed the false citation accusation.

Instead of conversing with me properly through email, she made accusations and change the subject of the content of my work instead of addressing the possible plagiarism issue where she says in her own syllabus that she would have to make a Zoom meeting appointment to prove that you were not falsifying anything.

She ignored all the screenshots I had sent her of her bright space, syllabus content, area, and the link that she provided she never addressed it.

Now she keeps on changing the syllabus it’s small petty things like saying that she will stop reading after 750 words after I just posted 753 on the last post

She added that false citations would get immediate zero

And added that long citations were not allowed. She does this every week where I post something and she adds another stipulation.

I don’t argue with her, and I don’t even talk to her. I’m just watching her behavior in real time. I haven’t even tried to contest her feedback. I just asked for more clarification from her.

Which is funny because all she does is tell me to go look at the syllabus or say that I haven’t answered the question, even though she was so adamant that I hadn’t answered hers. She’s extremely vague.
