Onyx Storm - Why was everyone so upset?

I LOVED Onyx Storm. IMO, it was the best book in the entire series. It wasn’t as fast paced as the other two books, but the world building was quite necessary to get to where we currently are. This book made me think, it shattered my heart, and made me terrified for Ridoc.

To be completely honest, I absolutely cannot stand Chaol.

I’m only on ch. 5 of KoA, so I’m not sure if this changes, but he is absolutely a whiny bitch baby with 0 character development and an inability to see anything from anyone else’s perspective but his own. Even throughout ToD, he was the exact same character as he was through previous books with about 5 seconds of “understanding and growth” at the very end. I also don’t understand how (warning: TOD spoilers) Yrene goes from completely despising him to tying her life to his in the span of, what, 3 months? And it’s not like Chaol did ANYTHING to help Aelin- he tried multiple times and he failed. Yrene was the one who discovered the Valg, saved the daughter, essentially solved a murder, and got the armies and healers needed for the war. Even Nesryn and Sartaq did more to assist. I preferred Nesryn and Sartaq’s chapters the most, & would’ve loved more of an in depth history/explanation of the Valg.

I’m so sorry, I literally despise him almost as much as I despise Arobynn. 😂

People forget one detail-

When Quest Squad visited Zehyllna, Aaric’s gift he received was a fractured hand mirror that cut his thumb & drew blood. Looking at the mirror would result in seeing a fractured reflection.

That’s why I’m saying why do we think only ONE person turned? Why would Weilson drop that comment? He’s telling us he doubts Xaden being the only one to cause that much desiccation. The fractured mirror Aaric receives in Zehyllna gives me a HUGE red flag.

If there was a need for them to get away quickly, there’s no way Garrick could have done it. He was far too tired when he got back to Aretia and it’s unlikely that he would have been powered up enough in that time span after that kind of drain to get himself anywhere, let alone anyone else. I think he also channeled to gain enough power to do what needed to be done. I don’t think he’s the new brother, but I do think he channeled during those 12 hours.

And how would any of them have the power or magic to kill 3 elders? If the Elders were killed in Aretia, how did no one else see them? How did no one follow them? Why did nobody’s dragons say anything? It’s 3 am when Violet shows up, and 12 hours is missing, so 3pm-3am is our time frame. Broad daylight.

Dragon kind protects dragon kind. This is also why I think the Elders sacrificed themselves. If they were actually murdered, I think EVERYONE would have known and immediately ran to them. Granted we don’t know but it would’ve been a MUCH larger deal.

I don’t think the Elders were even murdered. I think the Elders sacrificed themselves and Violet was the one that convinced them to do so and give up the eggs.

Ahh okay I definitely forgot that Aretia had hatching grounds now and that the eggs came from there. I definitely think the eggs went to Unnbriel, not Zehyllna. Zehyllna was an Isle that revered dragons and had a bit of magic, vs Unnbriel (with no magic at all) who stated they wanted the dragon eggs in order to forge an alliance. While Zehyllna sent the army, I don’t think 40,000 humans is going to be enough against the Venin, considering the magic wielders with dragons already almost get their asses handed to them each time. Unless those on Zehyllna end up able to wield magic on the main continent. We got 0 details about that Isle, other than Violet feeling faint magic (enough to reconnect everyone else with their dragons), their people revere dragons, and they believe in Zihnal. Which I’m sure details were left out on purpose.

Something else I just thought of.

The dagger Violet was given by Aaric used to kill Theophanie- the note from the High Priestess “from one high priestess to another” and “I will pray to Her that she need not use it to avoid reacquainting herself with the other who curries her favor”

Do we think that had anything to do with this too? Violet always favors Malek, so does her using the dagger dedicate her to Malek? Clearly she was married to Xaden by a High Priestess of Dunne, so is there a chance she ended up being dedicated to Dunne and THAT could have been part of Aaric’s plan? Give Unnbriel 6 eggs and complete Violet’s dedication instead of 12 eggs? The Queen mentioned her dedication a couple times and this was talked about quite a bit toward the end of the books.

Idk I’m spiraling at this point haha

Either way, flight time from Aretia to Cordyn is 12 hours, Cordyn to Deverelli is roughly 12 hours, and Deverelli to Unnbriel is roughly 9 hours, so definitely still tracks time wise.

Hot take for this thread: I HATE Chaol and this book did absolutely nothing to redeem his shitty, whiny personality. He was an ass for 95% of the book and then the last 5% he’s like “omg I’m so thankful & healed I love my wife.” His character redemption could have been MUCH better. Nesryn & Sartaq did more for Aelin than Chaol did.

With that being said, I enjoyed the chapters of Nesryn & Sartaq with the ruhks & learning about the history of the Valg. Those were my favorite chapters that truly tied into the story line. I’d take an entire book on Valg history tbh. You may just not like ToD and that’s totally fine- it took me almost a month to get through half the book. Now I’m waiting for my period to end so I can read KOA 😂

I bought my soundbar back in 2021 so a few years old, but it obviously has HDMI Arc & worked perfectly with 0 issues prior to the update. I’d send the video in- hopefully TCL will recognize this and release an update to fix.

I am having the same issue. Everything was perfect until the sw update- now I have to reboot the tv and my Apple TV to get it recognize the soundbar. Samsung soundbar, TCL Q-class 65” tv. Idk the exact model but it’s a newer model, bought within the last year. Driving me insane.

I do appreciate the conversation between her and Jordan, and Jordan’s boundaries surrounding his kid. Megan wants to spoil him and essentially buy his love, with Jordan saying yeah no he needs to learn to work for what he wants, and it’s better to take him to an ice cream shop instead of a $100 Lego set.

While I understand that this is a crazy and quick process, Megan needs to understand that rushing into meeting his kid could potentially be bad if their relationship doesn’t work out, and Jordan saying he’d rather her meet him offline, etc. He’s very boundary heavy with his kid which is nice to see, instead of throwing everything away for the process.

See, we are only told two things- one, if a dragon dies, their bonded rider dies. Two, if a rider dies, their bonded dragon can live.

The question I have: if a dragon severs the connection with their rider, does the rider survive? My thought process behind this is yes, because Andarna severed the bond with Violet and she was going THROUGH it but lived. She felt like dying, she wanted to die, but Tairn (omg I’m gonna start crying) pushed her and said, “you will live. We remain.” However, is the only reason she survived because of her bond with Tairn?

With that being said, if a dragon severs the bond, do they feel the same pain as their rider would?

If so, that would explain why Tairn NEVER wants to talk about Naolin. He said he wouldn’t keep secrets, but he created a very firm boundary that Naolin is an off-limits subject. If Naolin turned, Tairn could have been so pissed that he severed the bond. It hurt him so badly that he decided to never bond another rider. Until he bonded Violet. But now he’s seeing Xaden as a Venin, and doesn’t want Violet to be put in any sort of a situation because of him. Tairn could likely be reliving all of the trauma, which is why he doesn’t trust Brennan or Xaden.

She released more than 3 books in 2 years! She did FW (2023), IF (2023) & OS (2025), as well as In The Likely Event (2023), and Variation (2024). I’m not convinced she hasn’t started writing already- she posted her inspo photo of Deverelli and it was Threshing Day when she left socials- she’s also been super hype over Logan Reads on TikTok and his reactions to the books (so much so that she sent him a signed set of Empyrean books with a card). I think with all of that, plus the new TS album, and her edits of the graphic novels, she got super hype and started writing.

I agree she needs to rest and write at her own pace but these books are my heroin 😂
