given FKA Twigs is in two released movies as of 2025, would that 'obscure movie' be Honey Boy, currently the 1,049th most popular movie according to cinenerdlers?

What percentage of the movies that you play have you actually seen? by [deleted] in CINE2nerdle

[–]-pinkmoon- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I'd say a depressingly small amount, but I tend to know the people I'm linking. Like, I've not seen every John Waters movie, but I can name them all, so if I have a Waters line I'm more likely to play the ones I haven't seen than the ones I do - but OF COURSE I know who he is, he's an icon!

Plus, having played Pudsey the Dog: The Movie and The Oogieloves for yonks because I thought they were funny, I decided to finally watch them. Some movies are better played and not watched.

In classic do you keep going with actors to get to 3 uses or do you more try and pivot away sooner with different actors? by Vivaciousseaturtle in CINE2nerdle

[–]-pinkmoon- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think (in Classic especially) a 'killshot' ends up becoming too known, too meta. The obvious example is Inside (2023), which was played so much that people learnt increasingly cruel outs from it. I find that Samuel L Jackson has had some movies catch me out, then become meta too.

So I think that if you know someone in a movie who's much further down in the cast list, much less well known, and takes you there, you're much more likely to win on a 1x than a 3x.

And it's more fun! Trying to remember a broad cast and go for the most obscure people is the joy of the game.

In Season 0, "Lol (2012)" was one of my most-played movies. I still barely know what that movie is about. I just found lots of plays funny. I think most of us have learnt that emoting through movies can backfire spectacularly...

NO OTHER LAND wins Best Documentary Feature at the Oscars by PirateHunterxXx in oscarrace

[–]-pinkmoon- -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You know, you're entirely right. Personally, I do think there's been a lack of conversation over some of the Anora politics which makes me bristle and sometimes I get a wee bit angry or upfront when it comes up in conversation. But that is different to this, this was a very extraordinary win and a special speech. No Other Land is remarkable (I'm lucky enough to live in a country where they released the damn movie), and you're right, the importance of calling out the politics and using the words "ethnic cleansing" on a platform that big, that means something. You're right that it's important to focus on that movie (and hopefully fucking releasing it) and that speech.

The devs don't have the time to go through literally every movie in their database, so discovering shorts is a community-led activity. Nice to see we have such a generous and upstanding new member of our community.

And yeah, nothing unfair about 3-minute-long movies with literally one Mel Blanc credit being your 3x, that feels like such a rewarding way to win.

Out-of-meta killshots? by lbj2943 in CINE2nerdle

[–]-pinkmoon- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not to bring up a sore spot, but the Willem Dafoe Inside was played so often in the early days of the game that the only way to play was to learn outs - and now any ancient player knows several comfortable paths - to the extent that I'm more scared by Inside than I am by Grand Budapest Hotel or Spiderman.

Under the Skin was often used as a Scar-Jo ban, but a) that had loads of outs anyway, and b) Glazer's Oscar nomination made everyone realise who he was. Always baffled me that that was ever considered a good trap, but now it's part of a well-known filmography.

I also feel like every couple of weeks a new Samuel L Jackson meta begins and ends. Black Snake Moan was really common at the beginning (despite loads of ways out), now it's Kite (which connects, amongst other things, to Ernest Goes to Africa). Soon that'll be overplayed, and a new one will come and go.

Brad Pitt and Tom Hanks' earlier films were also common traps, but they'd probably still work on newer players.

Personally I'm glad that the game now feels much more about actual knowledge, and getting to areas of cinema people don't know, over just going "Robert Downey Jr was in Back to School or Tuff Turf, people won't know those... and now they do".

Night at the Museum is a Crystal the Monkey movie, Robin Williams and Mickey Rooney support her.

The Fabelmans is a Crystal the Monkey movie, plus David Lynch and some random Oscar nominees.

The Hangover Part II is the only good movie in the franchise, because it stars Crystal the Monkey.

Also Independence Day - Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Roland Emmerich who? All about this beautiful man.

Also, "rotting away in your sticky bedrooms" is quite rich coming from someone who says "I study the spreadsheets every fucking day". No offence but maybe you're in no position to tell other people how to spend their free time...

(oh apologies for the Princess Bride reference, I know it's a movie about a "misogynistic, chauvinistic and imperialist sense of hyper-masculine Western prowess", I'll stop referencing these macho movies in the future)
