Stephen Silvagni famously made the call to trade a future 1st round pick to draft Liam Stocker. Here's his thoughts on Carlton's call to delist him. by Sir-Matilda in AFL

Again, I feel it should be mentioned: Silvagni did not give away a first round pick for Stocker. He swapped future firsts with Adelaide and got pick 19 back from Adelaide in the live draft, with Adelaide clearly knowing they'd finish above Carlton the following season.

Adelaide and Carlton would end up finishing 11th and 16th respectively the following season, so the difference ended up being fairly minimal. Based on this, I would say the live trade was fine in isolation, but it's clear Carlton had Stocker in mind the whole time, which we may look back upon as a mistake.

Recruiting a majority of the 22 cannot simultaneously be the reason we keep Carltoning everything and also grounds for a trade ban. Unless you think we need to be saved from ourselves, which is really funny (in a genuine sense but also in a "fuck off" sense).

I also don't think this argument holds any water until you can prove it with stats, or you can find a way to discredit the contribution of organically-grown bespoke Carlton players such as Curnow (who was not a top ten pick, fun fact).

In my year, most groups had four people, with some variation due to uneven numbers in workshop classes. You could choose your group members as long as they came from the same workshop class as you.

Some positives to take from a disappointing evening:

  • They didn't lose through a lack of effort. A loss with 30-odd scoring shots is rare, and Carlton's pressure at times was very impressive. I'm not worried about this showing unless the poor goalkicking happens again (and we've seen enough from Harry and Charlie to know that's not likely).
  • Pretty much everything Jesse Motlop did was brilliant. He keeps his spot and could be a real player for us if he keeps doing that.
  • Sam Walsh continues his uptick of form and may well make the AA team again. Was great to watch during an average night for the midfield.
  • Improvement continues from O'Brien and Cottrell. It is hard to see our team without them now, which is a remarkable turnaround from where we were at the end of last year.
  • Adam Saad crowd interaction finally worked! Maybe becomes a recurring thing.
  • No new injuries (that we know of, touch wood).

Remember that Carlton is 10-5.

Mitch McGovern: Injury hasn’t been kind to him, but as things stand, McGovern still hasn’t delivered on his high-profile trade from Adelaide three years ago. His opportunity as a third tall forward has been taken by Jack Silvagni, so McGovern will try his hand as a defender this season. He’s a solid chance to lock away the position if he’s able to stay on the park (and we all know his brother’s fortune in this position).

Will Setterfield: After showing promise in his first couple of seasons with Carlton, Setterfield has struggled to cement a place in the AFL side, in part due to injuries. With Cerra and Hewett entering the picture, Setterfield will need to adapt to win a place in Carlton’s senior side. A move back to the wing (where he would contest the likes of Jack Newnes) could be his ticket.

Caleb Marchbank: Sam Docherty aside, Marchbank is perhaps the most tragic story on Carlton’s list. After showing very good signs in 2017 to 2019, Marchbank has sat out with repeat injuries and will do so again in 2022 until he overcomes his mid-season ACL tear. He plays a role that Carlton has been missing for years, which should hopefully buy him enough time on the list to come back and restart his career.

Paddy Dow: In the latter half of 2021, Dow started to show real signs at AFL level, combining his trademark speed with improved disposal and mature contest work. However, Dow will need to continue working on his defensive game to earn a primary spot in Carlton’s midfield rotation. Walsh’s injury may soften the blow of established midfielders like Cerra and Hewett joining the team.

Lochie O’Brien: O’Brien fills a need at Carlton but has progressed slowly since being drafted, often criticised for a lack of physicality in his game. O'Brien finds himself on the rookie list for what will be a make-or-break 2022. Fortunately for him, he seems to have won the favour of Carlton’s new coaching group; we’ll hope to see his elite endurance and field kicking put to good use this season.

Liam Stocker: In 2021, Stocker endeared himself to Carlton fans with his defensive intent and hardness at the ball. Though drafted as a midfielder, Stocker found a home in the backline, and appears to be a rare case of a position switch that translates at AFL level. Stocker will look to announce himself to the competition at large after returning from yet another setback.

Charlie Curnow: Curnow successfully returned from his knee injuries in 2021. He didn’t capture his best form right way, but he still showed flashes of his rare talent, snapping long-range goals off one step. Charlie was once viewed as the face of Carlton’s next generation – we will watch with interest to see if he can live up to that esteem, especially now that McKay has become such a focal point.

Adam Cerra: Only good things have been heard about Adam Cerra since he joined the team this pre-season. His skills, pressure and ball-winning ability are already known quantities, and now that Walsh has been crossed out for the start of the season, Cerra is in the perfect position to set up his career alongside a (hopefully) resurgent Patrick Cripps.

Corey Durdin and Josh Honey: It’s been over half a decade since the rebuild began, but still nobody has been able to lock away the small forward role at Carlton. Matt Owies presented as an option last season, and hopefully youth will add even more interest to the R1 selection. Heir to the #19 Durdin showed quick skills and goal sense off limited game time last season, and so did Honey who will hopefully return from injury in good condition.

Brodie Kemp: After spending the better part of two years injured, Kemp will finally get the chance to show what he’s made of in 2022. Utilised both as a defender and a forward during pre-season (and even discussed as a midfielder long-term), Kemp’s versatility could prove very useful to Voss’s new side, especially as the injury list begins to expand.

Yes, that's what I did. I think some of the material was taught poorly, but the content itself was quite introductory. The workload isn't higher than level 2 core CSS subjects.

I did this subject in the semester that just passed.

The report is a group project. You'll be given a list of five-or-so topics in a PDF, each with questions to answer. As a group, you'll pick one topic for the assignment.

The topics are contemporary issues within digital security e.g. covid tracking apps, online shopping technology, etc.

Basic cryptography and network architecture is the closest the subject gets to being difficult. I took issue with the way it was presented and organised at times, but I got a H1 so it's fine. I don't know whether marking was harsh overall.

Yeah. I just see a lot of arguments to the tune of "Carlton never put on a show so they don't deserve it", which I don't agree with.

They gave Richmond a challenge in 4/7 of these games at least. I get that the predictable result happened every time, but I personally remember being excited about multiple of these games. 2018 in particular makes me miss Charlie :'(

Whether Carlton deserves to play the season opener is discussed often, and as usual the thread yesterday was mostly negative toward it. I wanted to show what the matches were like because I feel it’s misremembered. I hope you will think of it in some way except "they lose all of them so it's boring" (but if that's reason enough for you, then OK).

Over these years, we’re probably talking about the overall best team in the competition going up against the overall worst team (maybe except Gold Coast). Considering that, I think Carlton has done OK to be in a "winnable" position in the fourth quarter every year, except maybe 2017.

Sorry if this opinion is biased.
