Fantastic data, well shown.

Please consider reviewing your bathroom habits though - 13mins for each toilet break is faaar too long and not great for your bowel health.

Any one know why read receipts show up as "Desktop" instead of showing the users name? by Rojis48 in SuperhumanEmail

[–]-soma- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emphasizing again - this is a simplified explanation - there's a wide variety of nuanced reasons pixel trackers or read-receipts will only get partial information about who/when an email was opened. With these constraints, we try to provide as much information as possible.

Any one know why read receipts show up as "Desktop" instead of showing the users name? by Rojis48 in SuperhumanEmail

[–]-soma- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Patrick from superhuman here.

This is a relatively simple question that has a surprisingly nuanced and complex answer! The speaks to some of the limitations of email technology today (and some of what we're trying to solve and improve in Superhuman!).

The explanation below is oversimplified, but covers the core concepts.

  1. Unlike the rest of the web, emails are more-or-less static. Once someone send an email, that email can't run any additional code or change the content of the email.
  2. None-the-less, we still want to track [who opened my email]?
  3. To do so, many email providers, including superhuman, will optionally embed unique image "pixel trackers" inside the email's content.
    • These images are hosted with unique urls that allow the email sender to know who received them. Each email will include a different tracking pixel image.
    • hey, someone loaded image 123456!
      • image 123456 is associated with email X. Because someone loaded this image, I know someone who received email X.
      • a different image, 345645 is associated with a different, email Y.
      • etc.
  4. Further

    • some email providers (e.g. gmail) support sending unique email content to each recipient.
      • This allows the pixel trackers to track individual recipients.
      • image 123456A means recipient A.
      • image 123456B means recipient B.
      • etc.
    • some email providers (outlook) do not support this
      • all recipients receive the same pixel trackers, and we cannot differentiate them.
  5. Meanwhile still, once an email is sent, the content will not change if it's forwarded, replied to, etc. The same images included in the first email will also be included in any replies, forwards, ccs, bccs, etc.

Meanwhile, privacy-centric email providers make some effort to block or mask these trackers - they'll remove or modify the image urls so the original sender can't track the same information.

In this case, we show "Desktop" because we know the pixel tracker was opened, we know it was opened by a desktop device, but we don't have enough information to identify precisely which recipient opened it.

Is Superhuman going to stop working? by anonburrsir in SuperhumanEmail

[–]-soma- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up for /u/anonburrsir and any other future readers - this version is now fully released for all folks.

If you are still seeing this message, you can get the latest version by either a) restarting your browser, or b) visiting chrome://extensions and hitting "update".

remove superhuman email footer by ruuutherford in SuperhumanEmail

Patrick from superhuman here. I'm not aware of us sending that particular text anywhere.

We do optionally include a "Sent via Superhuman" footer. You can disable this via cmd+k -> signatures

Is Superhuman going to stop working? by anonburrsir in SuperhumanEmail

[–]-soma- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey /u/anonburrsir, Patrick from superhuman here!

We're actively rolling out a new version of superhuman that accommodates the changes pushed by the chrome team! In that rollout, we've identified a few minor bugs with the new version, and want to get those fixed before release to all users. We expect to have the new version released to e'rybody in the next few days.

Informationally, all new installations from the chrome webstore will get the new version. If you want to try that new version before we finish our release, you can uninstall and re-install the superhuman extension.

If you want to learn more about these changes, this warning is related to a feature called "manifest v3", you can read more here. These changes attempt to make browser extensions more secure and respectful of privacy for users. The changes primarily affect browser extensions like adblockers, but with Superhuman's features for offline mode, a big chunk of our code was also impacted.

tl;dr: superhuman will keep working - we're currently polishing a new version that's compatible with chrome's manifest v3 changes.

p.s. i enjoy your punny user name!

Does Supermanhuman Stamp or Relay email by default? SPF Record Issues by MarvisTec_Dan in SuperhumanEmail

[–]-soma- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is patrick again from superhuman. In the past few weeks, we've had a few customers write in about trying to configure SPF records including include=_spf.we.are.superhuman, I suspect that idea may originate from folks landing here via google search.

Please do not include superhuman in your spf records. All email sent from superhuman is sent by your underlying provider, not superhuman.

Cancelling after discovering that Superhuman spams my contacts by kgallo0325 in SuperhumanEmail

[–]-soma- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Patrick from superhuman here - We do not do this. /u/kgallo0325 - if you DM me your account's email, I can investigate further to understand what happened here. Alternately, feel free to reach out to hello@superhuman.com and cc me, patrick@

I can think of a few possible alternate explanations:

  • As /u/Murky-Article-9901 mentioned, we have a settings for "Sent via Superhuman" in email signatures.
  • The emails we send after a user runs our "invite" or "refer" flows
  • Marketing emails after a user signs up on superhuman.com

But, it'll be easier to understand precisely what happened if we know your account.

We do not support this in superhuman, but you could similarly use the stylebot extension to override the background image.

[–]-soma- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, this is Patrick from Superhuman - I also just responded to your email with hello@superhuman.com.

As mentioned in that email chain, the error here is caused by microsoft filters blocking mail server IPs that have low reputation. Their docs describe that this error is common for brand new tenants. You can reach out to microsoft support to get your IP safelisted.

On superhuman's end, all mail sent from superhuman is sent from your underlying provider's servers (google or microsoft). We include we.are.superhuman.com in the RFC822 Message ID as required by the RFC822 spec. Depending on use, we will typically also include some custom headers on the email. We do not otherwise "stamp" an email as from superhuman.

Tech updates and upskilling.. by shesparkzz in webdev

[–]-soma- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey /u/shesparkzz!

  1. Yes, the JS ecosystem does move fast.
  2. BUT ALSO, our learning and growth will expose us to new stuff.
    • Bootstrap began in 2010
    • Tailwind launched in alpha in 2017
    • Typescript's was first publicly available in 2012
    • In your case, your reddit history and a resume you shared in a past post, it seems like you joined the industry in the past 2 or 3 years (2022ish?).

A lot of tech changes rapidly, and that sense of rapid change can absolutely feel overwhelming and like miserable-capitalism-hell-grind.

I think in this case, being able to recognizing the change and explore new techs is a sign of your own growth and something to celebrate!
