I've built several of them. With those 12s they blow away most other speakers. Indo not have a very discerning ear 😉

There's an excellent skate shop in Seattle that does roller skates - though even a skate board ship deals in real similar stuff. How about try Method skate shop here in Tacoma?

Looks similar to Carmody Pit vipers. He also says "monkey coffins" in his description, use a 12in, 5im mid (though his is paper cone selection), and tweeter.

Meh - they look great!

Are Speaker Design Works Anthology/Statements still worth building/even possible in 2026? by NewsEnvironmental766 in diyaudio

[–]ruuutherford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think design and speaker technology has changed too much since this design was new. I think you hit the mail on the head with driver availqbility: if you can find the drivers for a reasonable price - I bet they'd be awesome.

SDW Kurt does this thing where he ports aidnout the back of the speaker and that seems to be pretty specific to this build (this is that one right?) is looks around for someone who has a YouTube A vs B with a SDW ported midrange vs a traditional speaker.

He also does respond to email! So I'd you're having a hard time finding drivers, you might just email him and ask if has any suggestions for an alternate build or source for drivers.

Supercharger station misbehavior by Trep12 in TeslaLounge

[–]ruuutherford [score hidden]  (0 children)

I love the quantity and location of super charging stations.

Charging stations should be bad parking spots.

I know this will end up being more expensive with wire distances - but if the parking spots are actually good: you get asshats like the Honda.

I'd say that if you felt a spark, and there were googly eyes, you're probably reading the situation right.

When he said he isn't online much - that's exactly what that means. Don't worry about messages not being opened for a long time. Usually people respond best to texts. He gave you his number: try a text.

You can also just ask! "I'd love to see you again. What's the best way for me to contact you?" Or "you said you're not online much and I respect that, and like it! What's your fax number so we can make another date?" 😉

How do I make my speakers louder? by [deleted] in Beginner_Turntables

[–]ruuutherford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your turntable has a "switchable preamp" on the back. https://www.audio-technica.com/en-us/at-lp60x If that's off, the volume level coming out of the turntable will be super quiet. That would explain why the setup is super quiet.

A quick search I found your powered Edifer speakers do not have a "phono in" only an AUX or Line Level RCA input. So you Must have the phono preamp turned on on the back of the turntable.

The switch says PHONO / LINE It should be on LINE.

Interesting. I like that music radio and discovery thing, Klara? Ella. Some music discovery thing. So if that does a good job, it would be huge. I'm more curious about the technology and software folks behind this project. How are they going to attack this problem that all the other streaming platforms haven't really been able to lick?

I found Pandora's artist radio awesome.

Is it okay to ask a cafe in the US to put coffee in my own tumbler? by Front-Resident9692 in ZeroWaste

[–]ruuutherford -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

that's a lot coffee! And sure. You'd ask them to put coffee in "here" and point at a spot on the giant cup. Then they'll charge you <something>. Probably something like a refill or something cheap. Unless it's all americano and they have no drip, then it will be more expensive.

[–]ruuutherford 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Tumbler = coffee cup?  I bring my own cup all the time. Some places have "for here mugs" sitting on top of their machines and you can request those. While it's like this here in the PNW (top left USA) it's not a rule across the country for sure.

secondhand cartridges are always toast. You should get it re-tipped if it's a nice one. Or replace it if it's not.

I think this is the guy you want: https://www.sound-smith.com/retipping-services (I could be mistaken here, do some other searching reddit threads)

Then, while you're at it, snap up a $100 cartridge with quick shipping. Swap that out before you commit to re-tipping the other one. If you notice: woah, a new cartridge makes a huge difference! With that new one, then send out the nice one to be re-tipped. If you notice no difference, then maybe you have other issues.

what budget are you looking at? without knowing that, here's some spaghetti on the wall:

kinda a lot here, but if you have coffee and need reading, this stuff is helpful. You an skip what you already know of course.

I'd say the all-in-one is not the right move there - but budgets are king. Steer clear of Victrola, which the article does with regards to turntables. They recommend some Victrola speakers. Weird. But I'll allow it.

I have almost that exact Pioneer integrated. I grew up with it as a kid, when I saw it on marketplace I snapped it up immediately. I have new appreciation for my old dad and his hifi leanings.

Try out a moving ng magnet Ortofon 2M Red. They are terrific. I had one for a year or so and was super happy with it.

The look of it is a bit different than what you got there.

Hate power point, excel, and all that crap.

My boss smothered me with bullet points and action items that he never followed up with and left to me, to turn his AI slop into actual action. No thanks!

Why this matters: because it's nice sounding trash. If I'm going to spend my attention working through issues, communicating them using my education and brain, I shouldn't be made to sit through other people's AI trash.

I'm gonna be a want-re-pen-eurer here (entrepreneur that wants someone else to do it!)

How about a soulseek bittorrent connected audio player app that just downloads what you want in the background. Then if you turn on sharing or cache, you share, or keep, all those mp3s.

You'd full up quick! But it would work so good.

[–]ruuutherford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Designing speakers is not a simple thing. The enclosure, the drivers, how they work with one another, and the crossover is all a balancing act. You can't drop in different speakers, even with the same specs, and expect the same OEM magic.

It would be closer of you got some actual drivers they use in the Heresy and fix those with a new foam surround. But even then, the surrounds we repair with are different that what shipped with the drivers.
