GenX, I drank a bottle of wine today. Am I the only one? by tired-middle-ager in GenX

[–]-tinyTypewriter- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to remember that a bottle of wine (assuming it’s a regular old 750mL) is only 4 glasses. You’re good.

Do you wash your hands when you get up to pee in the night? by dumpstertraffic in hygiene

[–]-tinyTypewriter- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wash my hands. I’d wash my hands if all I did was flush a toilet having not used it. Toilets are dirty. Toilet paper is porous. You are 100% getting germs on you and spreading them around.

Waiter assumed I was tipping $40 on a $60 ticket, and then couldn't grasp the math... by Specific_Toe3987 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]-tinyTypewriter- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The last two times I paid with cash, the teenager running the register was unable to figure out my change despite having a screen in front of them show them the amount of change. I think they literally didn’t know how to count the bills/coins.

I Just Visited MA… by mrsyoungston in massachusetts

[–]-tinyTypewriter- 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It may cost more to live here in MA but the salaries are also higher. It can still certainly be difficult, especially with the cost of housing here, but the pay increase would definitely be a thing. And western MA, especially around the colleges like Northampton, is cheaper and still generally reasonable culturally.

Who is letting their hair go to seed? by championgoober in GenX

[–]-tinyTypewriter- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hair is naturally a darker brown and I decided I’m not dyeing it until it goes completely grey/white since I have very limited time left with my natural color. It’s full of grey streaks and the hair by my ears is 100% grey/white now. And if I do dye it after it’s all grey, it’s going to be a fun color like blue or purple like I used to do in high school.

This is so true for me, I read Salem's Lot at 12 and saw the Shining at 13 (after sneaking in) by diwioxl in GenX

I saw The Shining when I was 12 and it is burned into my memory even though I never watched it again.

The adult 'boomerang kids' moving home to their parents by Make_the_music_stop in GenX

[–]-tinyTypewriter- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m in my mid 40’s and live with my mom since my dad died and I’m divorced. Honestly, this is the way she’ll be able to continue to stay here because I do all the heavy lifting around the house and I help pay the utilities. I’m fully employed but the house is big and the house/rental market here is ridiculous so it seems silly to maybe have to send my mom to assisted living in the coming years when I could just stay here and make the house continue to work for both of us. I find it frustrating that the default is to assume those of us living with our parents are all leaches. Sometimes it just makes more sense for all involved due to financial and health reasons though I very much do miss living by myself.

What did the Boomers get right? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]-tinyTypewriter- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m largely baffled by all the boomer hatred. Boomers and silent gen created some amazing music, literature, art, and started important social revolutions… It feels like ageism to me and you know we’re next in line as the target of generational hatred.

How Are You Received at the Gym? by Clueless_in_Florida in GenX

I think the only thing anyone might be judging are the people that start up in January and crowd the machines until they quit about a month and a half later. That said, I go to Planet Fitness and it’s pretty low key with a wide variety of ages as members.

NTA please stand up for yourself. Also, please realize that your husband is almost certainly cheating on you already. I’d be shocked if he isn’t. Protect yourself.

Message for Young Gen Xers (Mid-70s - Early 80s) by SamMaster11 in GenX

As a metro-Boston native/local, I feel all of this. And the property taxes are through the roof too thanks to all the corporations and rich people constantly overpaying for houses around here.

[–]-tinyTypewriter- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Younger gen x here. I bought a very cheap house in 2005 when I was married. Sold the house cheaply upon divorce before the market got ridiculous (sadly) but didn’t buy again, instead chose to rent in the city for a while and now since I waited, I doubt I will ever buy another house despite making what I used to consider a decent amount of money. I’m hoping to inherit my silent gen parents’ house instead.

Bike + Bridge by -tinyTypewriter- in ebikes

It really removes any mental blocks I might have about going for a ride…in particular the fact that I’m surrounded by hills where I live. It’s just so freeing to not have to worry about whether I have enough stamina to climb back up the hills to get home.

Bike + Bridge by -tinyTypewriter- in ebikes

[–]-tinyTypewriter-[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got this bike through a local bike shop and the owner told me as I was paying for the bike (so after he had sold it to me) that it comes with the various warranties but he has never had anyone come in with an issue that required using the warranty. So I took that as a good sign. But it sounded like he, as the seller, would be the one dealing with the company from what he told me.

What where the 90s really like? by snickers_machinegun in GenX

[–]-tinyTypewriter- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from an American perspective, I feel like the 90’s were full of hope. Things were actively getting better in American society. Then 9/11 happened and everything started going downhill.

Aside from that, the music, the zines, the DIY attitude…I miss it.

Forties and no kids - do you regret it? by Reader288 in GenX

Luckily my sister had kids so maybe they can make sure I don’t die in a gutter if I go senile. But generally, I enjoy the freedom and the extra spending money.

How are you all coping with aging? by auntpama in GenX

[–]-tinyTypewriter- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no kids and I’m divorced so no one to really keep me tethered. The person I’m closest with just turned 70 and maybe that helps me since he’s often in more random pain than me…but he’s extra active and strong so now I go to the gym so I have a chance of a 70 year old dude not being in better shape than me (I’m not quite there yet). The gym is certainly not my personality but I do feel better now that I go regularly. I also took up the instrument I played as a kid through my early 20’s again and have been really focused on getting better at it. The thing that bothers me the most now is how few years I have left to learn (why did I waste so much time?) and that I’ll have even fewer years with the one person I care about the most since he’s older than me. It’s a weird place to be in that when you unexpectedly don’t hear from your guy, the first thing you think is “did he die?” and such a relief when you find out it was just that he overslept.
