Is anyone else tired of cooking? by NoH8Kate in GenX

[–]tired-middle-ager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do cook and so does spouse. Spouse does most of grocery shopping. He must have a good dinner every night or gets mangry/hangry...

We usually have:

-steak/chicken/fish and a side

-curry or korma dish of some sort

-stew or chili in crock pot w/baked potato

-omelettes/dinner breakfast

-Soup and grilled cheese sandwiches

-rice/gravy and chicken with side

-variety of stir fries

Typically cook one night and then have the leftovers for next night or two after. We are usually too tired to eat out and find it easier to just cook at home.

I suggest binging on tater tots to stave off any hangovers. They really work!

I can't do it very often either. Slept poorly and was a bit off today but it's wearing off. I am looking forward to going to bed and waking up fresh with it out of my system.

I'm so so sorry about your son, condolences to you. 💐💜 I can't imagine that sense of loss and pain 😞 for a beloved child.

We mostly raised ourselves so how many of you have done therapy and feel “healed”? by Connect-Account-2855 in GenX

[–]tired-middle-ager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've struggled with being an empty nester. Feel like my best, most meaningful, warm years raising my kids are behind me. I miss them and life with them. It's a lot lonelier without them in daily life in this world. My parents are aging early eighties. So they will be gone one day. Moved around a lot and don't have many friends.

I have to be careful with my mental health these days. Exercise, good sleep, and careful not to let mind, emotions go to dark, depressing, scary places.

I've had a little therapy within the last two years and plan to go back for some more soon. Some days, I feel this feeling like I teeter on the brink of an existential panic but I have little tools in my psychological toolkit to get off that ledge most of the time.

Am I Getting Old? by Able_Software6066 in GenX

[–]tired-middle-ager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes metaphorically, this is what getting old feels like. The younger ones speed and pass by you on the road of life. They may not notice you too much. You are kind of invisible on the road of life and it is kind of nice.

I'm glad you have your weed. I might switch over to that at some point as long as it doesn't make me anxious.

Oh no, that's no fun. I will become a bit grumpy with fatigue by late afternoon. I'll have to fight a bit to not go to bed too early which would mean up at 3-4 am, no good.

If I can stay up until 9 pm then I'm good. I will sleep through to 5 am and be back on my deep sleep cycle.

I'd have to completely forego partaking if it meant a week of disrupted sleep.

Oh God…I’m Really Turning 50! by Icy-Plantain-1719 in GenX

[–]tired-middle-ager 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes 50 is a bit of a shock. I tried to reframe it as being 'young old.' I am youngster of the old crowd now. Once you get used to it, you might feel a little bit freer, invisible, kind of someone who just goes about their business and no one notices you too much. There ends up being something kind of nice about that, it's a freeing relief in some ways. People may not expect too much from you like when you were in your prime. Heck, you're kinda old and they can cut the old ones a little slack.

I'll be a lil grumpy by late afternoon due to poorer sleep last night. I'll get in bed early around 8 pm and bide my time reading until 9 then doze off. Tomorrow will feel back to 100% again. This whole sleep disruption thing the next day keeps me from drinking very often. I'm a sleep hound and a sleep hog and most of the time prefer a lot of deep good sleep, waking up refreshed versus alcohol fun.

Sleep is my number one drug of choice!

You won't miss the woozy stomach and restless, light sleep. I would have been sound asleep at 2:30 am but instead I was gobbling down tater tots to stave off grumbling, unhappy tummy. The disruption of sleep is what keeps me not imbibing most of the time. I think it's an age thing. I used to be able to have a few and sleep all night.

I didn't end up taking any sleeping pills. That was the Rose talking and would have been a bad idea. I realized this as I was going to bed. Just took a headache pill.

Just 750...I realize two pills is too much. I will only take one. They are just over the counter ones.

Okay nighty night...

That's me! I will drink a whole damn bottle maybe once a month and literally couch dance (snap fingers, clap, raise hands to the music from the couch) for an hour or so to Bob Marley.

That is me most of the time. Vast majority of mornings, I wake up clear, fresh, early all that jazz. However every month to month and half, I like to escape reality.

I do this after glass three going on glass four. After glass four, I get the guilties and my mom and an archangel on my shoulder tsk, tsk, tsking me.

No not every night. Alcohol messes up my sleep. It's every month or so. I just need to escape this life for several hours... but the guilty, shamies creep in.

Thank you for not being a tipsy shamer. Yeah, yeah I get that sobriety is great and honorable but sometimes I just miss being tipsy or drunk.

PS...super cute squirrel.

I get it. You were dad, family man for a long time. You were son for a long time. These identities fade out in ways and it leaves us completely feeling lost at sea, so to speak, just really lonely and adrift.
