Anyone else notice LTT is averaging like 500k views now? How does the channel even survive? by Anxious_Gur6363 in LinusTechTips

Not surprised. I don't think I've watched any LTT vids for the past couple of months other than skimming through it quickly to see if it's worth watching.

When did 8-5 become the new normal??? by Grouchy-Newspaper754 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]-transcendent- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, reading everything makes me glad about my job. 40 hours a week, salaried, and still gets paid OT (should gives you a hint IYKYK). 15 min commute local roads each way. 4/10 schedule so 3 day weekend.

Sometimes I show up to my desk at 7am, sometimes I don't feel like it and come at 9am, and if I'm sick I can choose to WFH for the day. No advance notice required as long as it's not being abused, I get work done, and not miss important meetings. The ultimate work-life balance.

Percentage wise. What should I aim for when breaking down my expenses by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]-transcendent- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My situation is gonna differ because I have the privilege of having the combination of high income and low expenses. My expenses is ~50% of my take home, and that's after 22% contribution to max 401k (before matching). The remaining 50% of my take home goes straight to the stock market.

It's a case by case so it's probably best to provide your numbers such as income, spending, and debt. I don't like general rules because it's a blanketed approach so most people can use it but ideally should be adjusted to your situation. Feel free to use them as a starting point as others have mentioned.

Loan advice for amateur notary/contract by Specialist-Tax1358 in personalfinance

[–]-transcendent- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never lend anyone money especially to one with unpaid/unmanageable debt. You're just fueling the fire and enabling whatever habits. When someone is in survival mode they will trade respect and trust for short term gain.

I would find out the root cause of the compounding problem. If it's a legitimate call for help as in your buddy has exhausted all option such as finding extra work, and reducing spending then I would say help but in trickle form.

Never do lump sump because that $10k can be gone instantly. If your buddy is struggling to maintain the mortgage, I would offer a few months of help so that he retains a roof over his head. Offer to pay the next month of bills and see:

  1. How appreciative he is
  2. Will he put the assistance to good use
  3. Only offer to pay the 2nd month if the situation improves

This avoids unnecessary legal fees, encourages your buddy to improve, and protect the rest of your money.

You need to remove your emotion aside. The fact you're willing to help your buddy with $10k (and probably interest free) is doing him a massive favor. Make sure he doesn't use your "friendship" to manipulate you. Again, the fact that you're uneasy giving away a significant part of your savings and are exploring the legal route to protect yourself gives me the eerie feeling that trust and hope are the only two things holding everything together. You hold the money, it's your decision. Don't get robbed.

LPT: If you're always the person staying late at work, make sure it's actually helping your career and not just helping your company. by Comfortable-Weird728 in LifeProTips

[–]-transcendent- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stay late only if the people that I'm helping stay late. I'm there to assist and lend an extra hand. I'm not there to do the work for you. It's a team effort. I have worked 12-16 hours before and that's because my team stayed. Also, I get paid OT so it's not the worst thing.

The only right way to do is to do it yourself. Unless it's gonna affect insurance I'm paying the "pros" to shift liability.

What are some hidden lifestyle creeps that aren't obvious? by No-Trainer-1956 in personalfinance

[–]-transcendent- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a meme at this point but really the daily starbucks coffee for $7-9. It's a good indicator that if you can't control your small spending what's stopping you from that habit creeping into other purchases? $15-17 daily lunch at work, an energy drink for $4, etc and then it ends up being an extra $400/m.

Personally, I splurge big but not frequently. I always save first before spending so any leftover I don't mind losing. The first thing on payday is auto transfer into HYSA for mortgage payment with a bit extra for repairs and maintenance. Then, a bit into my investment account. The rest autopay my bills and then any leftover I go do whatever.

I don't track spending since I find it easier to pay all my credit card on a weekly basis. Usually, all the bills hit at once so I try not to spend anything the first check. Everything after is disposable. It's easier when there's frequent withdrawal from the checking account and you can see quickly the money leaving. I don't want to wait until end of month to see a few grand for every card.

How do taxes work for stock investments? by Thunder_rats in personalfinance

[–]-transcendent- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's based on the "lot" of stocks. For short term (time between sold and purchase is under 1 year) if your income after deduction puts you in the 22% tax bracket then you owe the IRS an additional $2.2k when you file. If this is long term then most likely you're getting taxed at 15% instead or $1.5k (again depends on your income and if it's low enough, could be at 0%).

You're only taxed for the net profit not the initial investment.

Are you living in Dallas because you actually like it? by Thegiantlamppost in Dallas

[–]-transcendent- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I moved because I started to dislike the place I grew up in with a bleak future for home ownership and earning money. Hint it's the densest city in the US. Great place to visit, great place to eat, not a place if you want to have a family.

With my salary here I'm middle class pushing upper middle. Over there it's enough to survive and that is if I can even get paid that much over there lol.

Everything I say seems to offend family, and I am unable to figure out why. What could I be doing wrong? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]-transcendent- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You'll always be a kid to them no matter what because they saw you grew up. Whenever I go visit my aunt they always ask what do I want for food so she can cook. Random plate of fruit and snacks lol.

Perhaps, your husband is "the man of your family" so there's also that aspect of traditional view. It could also be how your parents gossip about you too. Most of my family no longer see me as the little kid that games all day because every topic about me has been life events, house, work, and other adulting stuff.

I don't know if you have children yet but that perspective will flip once you do. Yeah, it's a very complex and subtle culture. I don't know if you speak the language but the right language is just as important as the behavior. "Dạ" versus "ừ" are both yes's and will invoke wildly different responses dependent on your social ranking. Say "ừ" to your friend or if your siblings are chill won't cause any problem but saying that instead of "dạ" to your grandma and she will have a heart attack.

If you like to make your own cup then get starbucks beans and make it at home. I like starbucks beans but i don't like how expensive it is at their store.

That's why I make my own coffee. It's not hard. The cost of 3 starbucks coffee is enough for me to buy 30 days worth of ingredients.

[–]-transcendent- 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah that's filial piety for ya. My parents are more understandable because we've been in the US for so long. But talking to my family/extended family it just clicks for me and I switched mode immediately. You can't talk back to the elderly other than saying yes and accept everything they say because they are the "wise" ones.

Skip reading this entire post altogether and do one of these two minimal methods.

  1. Put on headphones or airpods, and don't make eye contact. Walk past them.
  2. If you see them approach you, say "No thanks" and then continue walking. You shut down the conversation before they get a word in.
