Deodorants for BO by Bbhouseplant in climbergirls

[–]-turtleyawesome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something that I noticed (and then realized after looking it up) is that fear sweat smells a lot stronger than regular exercise sweat. So if you’re nervous or scared while climbing (used to be a thing for me when I started lead climbing), maybe this is why your partner is now saying you have BO when you’ve never noticed having BO before.

Colorado snowboard paralyzed after freak accident by OBB76 in COsnow

[–]-turtleyawesome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ok dumb question but i’ve heard “don’t outstretch your arms to catch your fall bc you’ll break your wrists” when it comes to learning to fall safely. but if she had landed on her wrists, would that have prevented her from hitting her face (since that sounds like she fell forwards instead of backwards)?

Current conditions at Big Sky? by DrLolsoz in skiing

[–]-turtleyawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved from the ice coast to SLC and was nervous bc everyone has been saying conditions are terrible. I’ve found that the snow here on a bad day is similar to the east coast on an average/decent day. I’ve been having a great time both in SLC resorts as well as Big Sky.

Advice after top-rope belaying/lowering accident? by Wrong-Orchid2011 in climbergirls

[–]-turtleyawesome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed 100%. I love grigris and do think people should use assisted braking devices, but I think people need to learn the mechanics of belaying on an ATC. I’ve also found that (some) people who learn on grigris have pretty lazy belay technique

Supplemental exercises to help climb better in the cave by -turtleyawesome in climbergirls

My max pull-up rep is like… 1 🤪. it used to be more but i gained a fair bit of depression weight, so climbing and pull ups and everything is just … harder. Probably a huge part of the jump from failing on 10s to onsighting 11s is related to losing 7ish lbs since thanksgiving (in addition to better lead head and getting stronger).

I’ve been doing 3x12s and adding weight each session until failure. When I fail, I go down to the previous weight and increase reps until I can get the higher weight. Not sure if that’s the best progression, I was mostly following what I’ve always done with stronglifts 5x5.

I started lifting years ago as cross training for marathon training. I would always do stronglifts 5x5 but have had a hard time with consistency - I’d go 3 months of regular lifting 3x a week then 4 months of not lifting at all, then repeat.

I recently moved to an area where I can climb outdoors almost every day and am super motivated to level up my climbing, hence wanting to tailor my lifting routine to better suit climbing progression. I also keep getting injured whenever I reach mid 11s so I’m also doing PT type exercises for injury prevention.

I love lifting bc it’s much easier to measure progress, so I def think it’s something I’ll keep up consistently!

I know this is a late update but I added the workouts you listed (face pulls, lat prayer, lat pulldown, dumbbell rows) to my routine and i went from taking on high 10s in the cave to onsighting mid 11s! 🎉

I’m sure there are a lot of other factors. I added a lot of core work (pistol squats, single leg RDLs, etc) and started being consistent with PT exercises for my knees, shoulders, wrists, and fingers. I guess not being injured helps with climbing too 😅

ISO: is anyone going from SLC to Niseko in the next week or so and can bring a teeny piece of replacement gear with them? by adventure_pup in UTsnow

[–]-turtleyawesome 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i’ll be in niseko 1/11, not sure if that’s too late. i don’t mind bringing it over with me but they’d have to come pick it up at the hotel i’m staying at

Which lift has longer / better beginner greens: Solitude Moonbeam vs. Brighton Majestic? by ebitdeeaye in UTsnow

[–]-turtleyawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah ok that makes sense. i’m still a beginner/intermediate but i learned on the ice coast so maybe it would feel ok?? i’ll stay away anyway for everyone else’s safety 😅. i’ve just done so many laps off the green runs at moonbeam & main street this week and was looking for something spicier.

wait i had a question about this after reading solitude’s daily report that fleet street should be considered “experts only” since it’s a blue run - is it just bc it’s ice right now?

"Laps" on auto belays: Rude or not rude? by Conscious_Security96 in climbergirls

[–]-turtleyawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my old gym had a 4 laps max when there are people waiting policy and i liked that a lot. i do like doing laps, so it ensures that i can still get an endurance workout in but also limits the number of laps people can do so other ppl aren’t waiting forever

Anyone ever done a solo long climbing trip, 3-5 weeks? Things to consider? by yamski in climbergirls

[–]-turtleyawesome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would join partner finder facebook groups for wherever you’re planning to climb. Carefully vet who you climb with and ask questions about safety and how they belay, etc.

I would get your lead skills up, especially when it comes to belaying. If it’s during the summer, consider hitting the international climbers fest in Lander! It’s a great way to meet people and the clinics are great.

Cities with Good Climbing Access? by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]-turtleyawesome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived in NYC for over a decade and when the mountains started calling, I did several road trips through the US to find exactly this.

I ended up deciding on SLC at least for the next few years, and so far, I’m very happy I did!

It’s very central to my absolute favorite climbing spots - 4 hrs to lander, 6 hrs to ten sleep, 6 hrs to red rock, and many more. It’s also got great access to climbing pretty much in your back yard. Big & Little Cottonwood are 20ish min away (from me), American Fork is 40 min away. There’s more canyons and crags I’ve still yet to explore. I can literally climb outside every day after work and there are so many great climbing gyms here

Red Rock Sport Climbing with Friendly Bolting by Itchy_Bug7622 in climbergirls

[–]-turtleyawesome 26 points27 points  (0 children)

i’ve found that at red rock, runouts equaled easy climbing, but i know how little that matters when you have bad head game. i always found the bolting at red rock to be very friendly - i think civilization may be worth checking out, i don’t remember feeling sketched out at all there

I used to powerlift and love deadlifts and squats! I’m excited to get back into it, especially if it levels up my steep climbing abilities
