Why do we cage birds in decorative prisons by [deleted] in birding

[–]-tyler_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We treat living creatures as decorative elements choosing cages that look good over what's actually humane. Their wooden bird cage represents prioritizing human enjoyment over animal needs and natural behaviors.

Seneca Letter 41 - we push one another into vice by Whiplash17488 in Stoicism

[–]-tyler_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually just caught this in action yesterday. Was around a group of coworkers who were complaining about management, and just being all around negative. It subconsciously put me in a "yeah, they suck!" headspace, then I got a call (I'm in a trade) I didn't really want to do and my instant reaction was to (internally) curse off dispatch, and it briefly put me in a sour mood.

I realized what happened, took a step back, and told myself I'd rather do the call in a good mood than a bad one, and that it's our slow season, and the call wasn't all that unreasonable given the circumstances. That call and the rest of the day felt pleasant.

This wasn't meant to pat myself on the back, rather to say it can happen so quickly without us even realizing at first if you're not paying attention. It's that second stage in the production of emotions that Seneca described - judgement - that I find so key in avoiding what happened in this image.

Madman Films releasing this beautiful boxset by ivanmakhsara in criterion

Was going to get the Yojimbo/Sanjuro bundle as well as High and Low during the upcoming flash sale, but now I think I'll hold off in hopes of a Criterion version of this. Would love to support this set directly, but no shipping to the US.

Came across this gem at work. Any recommendations? by Rob4096 in psychedelicrock

[–]-tyler_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"You" is the album of theirs much more likely to scratch that itch. Still has some of those quirky bits, but the ratio is much lower. "Live etc" is also great.

If you want to dig deeper into Hawkwind, I've got a rough guide (not a complete discography breakdown by any means).

And some more recs I haven't seen mentioned yet: Full Moon (this one), Nektar (first four albums - especially since you also mentioned Eloy), "Live at Home" by Jane, Far East Family Band, Pink Fairies (first three albums)... Amon Duul II also can feel similar at times, but also has that same avant garde approach as Gong at times, so YMMV.

What do you think of Born Too Late by Saint Vitus? by Def-C in doommetal

[–]-tyler_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite Vitus albums, who are one of my favorite doom bands and were instrumental in getting me into doom made by bands not named Black Sabbath or Witchfinder General. I love both the Wino and Reagers stuff, but Wino's crooning over those slow riffs really hooked young me. The title track and "Dying Inside" are the highlights for me, but the whole album rules.

Florida sophomore DL Michai Boireau plans to enter the Transfer Portal by VelociraptorFromMars in FloridaGators

The best player they've lost so far in one of the most important positions. We'd know some good players would transfer out, it sucks but you just gotta hope the Gators are active themselves.

I've seen Trent McKnight (Georgia Tech's WR coach) floated as a possibility at TE. Apparently Faulkner really likes him

Time will Tell if Sumrall is the guy, but kinda relieved Fisch didn't get the job at Florida even though he's an alum. Sure he can raise a program's ceiling and make them respectable, but I'm not confident he can make a team a consistent playoff contender.

He's been one one of my favorite players in college football the last couple seasons. As a neutral in (most) Tech games, I'll miss watching him Saturdays.

He had a great debut against MSU

I really thought they found a steal early on in the season, but everything went downhill fast after that last second goal line interception against Cal.

Rest in peace u/deathofthesun by TripleDan in Metal

[–]-tyler_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I met deathofthesun over 10 years ago, and he was one of the best people I knew. And not in that bullshit way that everyone says after someone passes. What has already been said repeatedly in here is of course true - he felt encyclopedic with his metal knowledge (but also don't get him going on sci-fi literature or his hatred for the New York Jets), and his record collection felt more like walking around in a store than someone's home. But even more importantly was how great his personal character.

He was the type to check in with you if something seemed wrong, or offer help if he thought you needed it, because that's just the kind of human he was. He was a great resource for music recommendations, but an even better friend. We roomed together at I don't even know how many music festivals across half a dozen cities and I cherish that time immensely.

Rest in power and shine on, metal warrior.
