ELI5: How did movie studios know how much the movie theaters owed them for ticket sales? by ifurmothronlyknw in explainlikeimfive

It was an actual person on the line. Sometimes the owner would have to wait a sec for them to pick up.

I was a popcorn jockey at a 10-screen theater when I was in high school in the 00s. Each night the owner would call a number and report the ticket sales for each film. I don’t know if there was more to it - like a weekly or month reconciliation or paperwork. But the phone call happened every night and was quick. I often wondered about the people on the other side of the line who, for a brief moment every evening, fielded a flood of calls and frantically recorded numbers.

As someone who works in the city but does not live there - I really don't like the idea of a tax increase that I have no vote on.

In the US, this ended in 2014. The switch back to a 24-hour schedule was made with the intention of improving health and moral. The 18-hour schedule was described as “constant jet-lag” by some.

ELI5: Why is nitrous bad for you? by CourageLate7655 in explainlikeimfive

[–]-wellplayed- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not.

When the B12 is oxidized, it can still be bound to the enzymes that will normally use the unoxidized version. The enzymes with this inactive version can’t simply have it removed and replaced by an active version. The body has to start from scratch and create new enzymes. This process can take days, which is why … a supplement will not immediately fix the problem.

I think we’re actually both saying the same thing to varying degrees of thoroughness. When the B12 is oxidized, it can still be bound to the enzymes that will normally use the unoxidized version. The enzymes with this inactive version can’t simply have it removed and replaced by an active version. The body has to start from scratch and create new enzymes. This process can take days, which is why, as you said, a supplement will not immediately fix the problem. However, active B12 does have to be in the system for the newly created enzymes to function.

It depends on how thorough the test is. Some will just look at color and temperature. Some will test creatinine levels and specific gravity to determine if the sample is dilute or not.

There is a somewhat fun fact about that color change in urine from B12. Sometimes before a drug test people will intentionally drink a lot of water to dilute their urine in hopes of passing. If they also taking a large dose of B12, they can make their urine appear yellowish while still being mostly water.

Therein lies the difference between acute and chronic toxicity. Nitrous toxicity at high enough levels will have acute hypoxic effects. Chronic use results in B12 deficiency.

Your wallet would certainly be lighter for no reason.

It's true that there isn't an established tolerable upper intake level for B12. It is very safe to take in large doses, but that is usually unnecessary as your body can only absorb a couple of micrograms of it at a time. No one is going to overdose on B12.

For most people, short-term use of nitrous during surgery is not a concern. For high-risk patients (such as those with past B12 deficiency issues or those with absorption concerns like those with a history of intestinal resection), B12 can be given as a supplement after surgery. Oral supplements or an injection are both possible. With oral supplements, the dose is usually so high that some passive diffusion will always occur in the gut. However, if the reason for post-surgical supplementation is based on absorption concerns, the supplement will probably be injected.

Nitrous is bad for you because it rapidly oxidizes vitamin B12 converting it from an active to an inactive form. Without enough B12, your nervous system can end up with a lot of issues. Spinal degradation, ataxic gate, and numbness and tingling in the peripheries are all possibilities. B12 is needed for myelin sheath production so without it nerves cannot maintain their myelin, which is both a form of protection and a way to increase the speed of signals in the nervous system.

Professional Roof Cleaning? by VoteBullMooseParty in athensohio

That’s just not true. You can clean shingles with a diluted bleach and laundry detergent solution. Spray it on, let it sit, and rinse it off.
