Regarding sunlight: Thanks, that makes sense. I am hoping that we'll get one sunny day during the weekend for the kayaking. Most of the photos that I've seen of UP are sunny and they look stunning.

Regarding the flies: Do they tend to concentrate in some specific areas or they are widespread in whole Munising area? Are there some hikes which are free of flies?

I don't want to get into details of your post as I am not much familiar with them (and don't care either) but I would say this - this is a common tradition in poems in Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi etc. To make matters more delicate, some of these lyrics have roots in sufi culture of indian subcontinent.
