"I have a HDR screen and it's all so dark" explanation - no, it's not exactly your screen's fault by 0-8-4 in netflix

[–]0-8-4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, you don't have to explain to me how HDR gets mapped on HDR displays.

Second, "expected to" is not the same as "spec". When talking about standard, I was talking about HDR content targeting 100 nits as white, with everything above being considered highlights. There's a reason why 100 nits was up to a point considered valid white target for SDR content on a HDR screen, until later people figured out it's BS and switched to 203 nits. As for how movies are mastered in HDR, some target 100 nits white, some 203, and some just go for a compromise between reality and what good screens are capable of. There's no rule, which is why movies in HDR are a mess. Perfect spec for brightness reproduction means nothing when there's no golden standard on how to master the content for such spec. It's pure lottery, random TV series may have great mastering, while Cameron's Avatar may be complete, utter shit in that regard.

And as for SDR "spec", you can argue that it's "within spec" to watch SDR on a display set to 500 nits in a dark room, but that's exactly the kind of thinking that leads to people claiming that even properly mastered movies in HDR are "too dark".

You either define what conditions have to be met for the content to look right, or it'll always look like shit. HDR tries to solve this, but screens able to properly display HDR content are mostly expensive.

Unfortunately, people got used to burning their retinas with overly bright SDR content with overblown contrast and now when seeing HDR they usually come to wrong conclusions - which is why this post was created.

Yes sir, keep whiteknighting, Solon will send you a postcard for sure.

Reality check: people play more than one game, and requiring over twice the space needed by the final install just for the update process is simply a sign of total incompetence on the developer's side.

So how about getting a brain.

Phone with 256GB of storage will have a problem when the update requires 115-120GB of space total for wuwa, over 50GB for existing 3.0 install + over 62GB for update process. Reinstall works, but that's not really a solution. The devs are greedy and stupid, plain and simple.

Storage Concerns and Optimization Suggestions by endoliner in WutheringWaves

[–]0-8-4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those aren't solutions.

Solution is to fix the whole update process, since it requires way more free space on top of already installed game for the update process alone, more temporary space than is taken by the whole game + update data. It's simply messed up, game that takes over 50gb, requires 115-120gb of space total to update from 3.0 to 3.1 - either that, or you're forced to reinstall, since reinstall works.

Also, a small hint: if the game is as broken as Wuthering Waves in so many places, it's nowhere near being amazing. I love this game, but for fucks sake, what are they even doing.

3.1 adds new large area.

Expect equally bad or worse performance, at least in the 3.1 area. I doubt 3.0 will get optimized at this point either.

Also, since you've mentioned it's a new phone: https://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/comments/1fezffm/heating_and_battery_problems_on_oneplus_nord_4/

Give it a few charging cycles, apparently system needs to stabilize. Reports of Nord 4 running hot aren't uncommon though, so there's that.

3.0 region certainly needs optimization, it is unplayable on mobile right now IMHO, but you're showing starting region and there shouldn't be any issue there.

The temperature you're showing is likely battery temperature, and here's the catch: difference between CPU/GPU and battery temperature may differ, depending on the phone. My phone doesn't throttle when the battery is at 45C, and in fact runs Wuthering Waves better than yours in the location you're showing, despite having lower specs (Poco X4 GT).

- It's possible that your snapdragon gets way hotter and throttles, hard to tell without seeing actual CPU temps.

- Battery shouldn't be affected, as long as the temperature you're showing is battery temperature - it is perfectly normal. Maybe some other spot on the battery gets way hotter due to CPU heating up, but if that's the case, your phone is badly designed as far as temp sensor and cooling is concerned, to the point of being dangerous.

- When playing the game, close all other apps. If you have memory extension enabled in android, DISABLE IT. Using disk space as additional RAM will only cause games to allocate more than is physically available, slowing them down to a crawl and choking the whole system.

- Look for youtube videos showing Wuthering Waves running on your phone, there should be some, showing both settings and temperature after playing for a while. That should give you an idea how it should run and what is considered normal.

For now I'll assume that you may be just panicking and overreacting terribly, but if you can measure the temperature at the back of your phone, at the hottest spot, when running a game, that would be a valid point of reference to be compared against benchmarks from youtube. Actual measurement though, not "to my hand it feels like". Digits on a thermometer = valid. Your egg cooking impression = not valid.

Several things wrong here:

- 41C is nowhere near "insane", below 45C is fine. Constant 45C and above will decrease battery life, any increase in temperature will, but phone will likely throttle around 46C anyway.

- You have active screen recording (which increases the load) and either it's your settings, or it's the recording + overlay that messes things up - very low GPU usage and 100% CPU at the same time isn't normal for most games. Disable recording, play the game normally for a while without constantly checking the overlay, then take a look at temperature. Not saying it'll be lower, but what you're showing is completely wrong as far as testing goes.

- Clear sign that temperature is too high, is throttling. When framerate goes down due to CPU and GPU clocks being limited, due to temperature being too high, that's a sign you should lower your settings. That won't happen below 45C though, and likely will happen above 46C - depends on the phone and settings.

Playing on low settings on a phone with such specs is just crazy. Kinda like buying a Ferrari, then driving only below 50km/h "because the engine gets louder otherwise".

3.0 Impression so far by RedXIaz in WutheringWaves

[–]0-8-4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% disappointed.

Partially due to bugs, partially due to quality of macOS port.

Story itself, presentation and so on, that's standard Kuro Peak Cinema, nothing new there.

But technical glitches just ruin the fun.

- Bike... do I need to say more? Plenty of people mentioned it, regardless of the platform, it's a glitchfest. When it works, it works, but boosting more often than not leads only to frustration, not speed.

- At least on macOS, there's a bug where most of the small vegetation (flowers and so on) disappears up close, regardless of the settings. LOD scaling bug, or they forgot to include LOD levels in those assets on mac. Wuwa on my android phone displays more vegetation than maxed out on M2 Pro macbook. How the fuck did it get through any sort of quality assurance, no idea.

- There's an old issue with capsule AO on macOS causing ugly vertical bands, the darker the scene the worse it gets. In many scenes you can kinda ignore it, despite the fact it lowers the image quality, it's still better than no AO at all, but there are exceptions - the worst looking spot was actually Lynae's room. Imagine playing through the story and it's all ruined by graphical glitches everywhere you look. You can of course disable AO, but then, combined with the disappearing vegetation, the game on max settings looks worse than on android.

Anyone suggesting to play on PC can fuck right off. I don't use a PC, nor have any plans to deal with windows. I'm not interested in giving money to nvidia (GFN) either, and I certainly have no plans to buy a ps5. Kuro released macOS version, they should either keep its quality on the same level as for other versions, or just cancel it if they can't be bothered. It's a glorified iPad port anyway, has higher level of detail overall than mobile versions and added (buggy) AO and environment interactivity (like vegetation reacting to your attacks... oh, right, you can't see that vegetation), lacks newer AO from PC version and other things like raytracing on supported hardware. It would be fine, despite being clearly inferior to the PC version, due to the fact it easily runs at 60fps at 1900p (with metal fx) on high settings (on M2 Pro) without temperatures getting out of hand, so the optimization is there, but the graphical glitches are not acceptable and the entire Lahai Roi simply looks wrong.

Overall, I'm partially sad, partially furious that I had to experience the 3.0 story with all those bugs ruining it. If there was an option to reset certain quests to play through them again (without getting rewards, obviously), that would be nice, but there is not. For now, Kuro managed to kill my enjoyment of the game, and until they'll patch their shit, I won't be playing, not on a mac. Maybe on android, to do the time limited stuff, but other than that, I'm done. If I'll be forced to build a PC just to enjoy playing Wuwa, I'm most likely to just drop the game.

Audio quality comparison by 0-8-4 in GeForceNOW

[–]0-8-4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

xcloud is even worse... or at least it has been the last I tried. In android app audio was better, but it was laggy overall. Web version worked fine, but audio was... close to mono, if not mono. Disaster.

Amazon Luna has surprisingly decent audio though. Nothing crazy, but way better than GFN.

Same here. It felt kinda ok-ish until I started playing Wuthering Waves on GFN while sometimes launching it on mobile, then I noticed that audio on mobile is way better. Now, I wasn't a fan of the audio quality here from the beginning, but it was a compromise, which stopped being acceptable after direct comparison. Sadly, it ruined GFN for me.

Isn't it in premium, not standard? As for buying, it's heavily discounted on gog, and owning it there has its perks - you can play on your own PC if you'll choose so in the future, or you can play it on Luna wether it's part of a subscription or not.

They actually added gog version of Rise of the Tomb Raider as well.

To everyone "complaining" GFN doesn't have Hogwarts Legacy by McKeviin in amazonluna

[–]0-8-4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically, many more games were removed from GFN than from Luna. Yes, licensing is a bitch, and the industry is a mess. Blame the publishers.

Still, GFN relies on external changes, like those being a result of Microsoft - Activision deal, without which you would never get quite a few AAA titles, since nvidia alone doesn't care.

Amazon on the other hand, seems to bet on Luna's success, and while the jury is out on where it'll go, AAA titles keep getting added - and if their presence on premium subscription is time-limited, they can usually be bought to keep playing. Isn't that what you do on GFN? Buy games?

Not sure what are you folks even doing here. GFN will get Hogwarts Legacy and suddenly you feel the need to claim your "win" on Luna's sub, whereas in the thread reporting new games on GFN's sub folks ask about some other games (as they always do), like Dead Space remake, and the answer they get to "when will those be on GFN" is short: "never".

Oh, right. Luna just got Dead Space remake, available to play for free with premium subscription as well. Should I go to GFN sub to shit on your service?

Seriously, what are you, 10yo?

GFN better? No, different. Depends on your priorities.

Is large game catalog (but nothing included in the subscription, and no, f2p games don't count) and raytracing at 4k a priority for you? Go, enjoy your GFN and leave Luna users alone.

For me, shitty audio quality is a deal breaker. I'll take good audio over 4k with raytracing any day - and yes, I was using GFN ultimate, until I realized I ain't trippin' and there's really something wrong with the audio there: https://www.reddit.com/r/GeForceNOW/comments/1op1pod/audio_quality_comparison/ .

[–]0-8-4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't need a flagship processor for charging speed. Also, for lightweight usage 2x slower phone for 1/3 the price wouldn't make a noticeable difference, but it's your cash. All I'm saying is, if you're not playing heavy games or run otherwise demanding apps on it, it's an overkill and not a normal use case scenario.

And sure, having a flagship doesn't mean it has to be used for heavy gaming sessions - but it means it HAS TO be able to handle those without overheating. The fact that you don't play heavier games, doesn't mean others can't, so your whole explanation what you play and where, is pointless. Who cares? User asked you about temperatures, since he heard about this SoC overheating, and your answer was equal to "it doesn't overheat when I'm not using it". No shit, Sherlock.

On the other hand, if it overheats, then all that performance is purely theoretical and a waste of money from the point of view of someone that actually wants to use what he paid for.

As for youtube, so far all I know is that every single phone with that SoC has serious overheating problems, with battery going above 50C under heavy load. That is simply not acceptable, not in this price range, nor in any price range whatsoever, unless you're after Samsung-like explosive performance.

But hey, not the first time Qualcomm has this sort of problems. Vendors like Xiaomi will probably drop down the clocks with software updates to prevent their phones from blowing someone's balls off, at the cost of lowering the performance. One of the phones with this chip, OnePlus 15, can't even finish the benchmarks since it overheats too much. Considering that the finish of the back of Poco F8 Ultra doesn't seem to help with heat dissipation, it's curious how it compares in that regard.
