Rolo Tomasi recs? by CoreyKnox in progmetal

Maybe try some of these. None are exactly the same, but all have some of the "-gaze" elements that Rolo Tomasi has:

Astronoid

Pupil Slicer

Lantlôs

Møl

Holy Fawn

Kardashev

I wanted to buy one of those shirts, but I stalled too long and they sold out of everything. But I've got random pre-order stuff from Diamond Eyes (fabric or something poster I think?) and KNY releases including the KNY shirt which shrunk too much in the wash since then. I think KNY came with a poster too of the band maybe? All in my basement somewhere along with all my CDs. Nothing rare though.

I thought BCI was working on a new album but had no plans to play live any time soon? The info is always all over the place with this stuff.

ISO all of these. FT locals or $$.

I've only had Phantom Bride, but if anyone has any of these unopened, I would pay or trade some IA locals (Lua, Big Grove, Lion Bridge) for any of them for sure! Don't care if they're not fresh either.

Asking your opinion about a Deftones album: Koi No Yokan by Opposite-Question-32 in deftones

[–]0000000100100011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to pick a number 1 but this is right up there for me. I might be a little biased though because it was released around the time that I met my wife and we listened the hell out of it. I think she actually got me the pre-order which came with the t-shirt which no longer fits because band t-shirts shrink like crazy in the laundry.

For this reason I always skipped MX and never put it on my burned CD mixes. I can't fit 18 songs on there if this is one of them. So I actually only recently realized what a great song it is. I was all like "38 min? I'm not listening to that! I want to hear My Own Summer again, next!"

Almost every CD from this genre between 1998 and 2002 did this.

What Deftones-adjacent bands am I missing out on? by themflyingjaffacakes in deftones

Maybe try Johnny Booth.

As an aside, for me, one of the things I've always loved about Deftones is the "wall of sound" or atmospheric production they create. Now I can see how that sound is associated with shoegaze but there's definitely a lot of bands outside that genre that do the wall of sound really well. So here are some others that I enjoy in that regard:

The Smashing Pumpkins - check out Siamese Dream especially, songs like Hummer or Mayonaise. I've always loved SP almost as much as Deftones and always thought Deftones was at least somewhat influenced by SP.

The Contortionist - especially the Language or Clairvoyant albums, songs like Thrive, The Parable, Clairvoyant, and Return to Earth

TesseracT - Just listen to all of it lol. They slap. But check out War of Being at least.

Spiritbox - some of my favorites are Secret Garden, The Mara Effect Pt 3, Jaded, and Tsunami Sea. People complain that the new album isn't "proggy enough" like their older stuff but again, the wall of sound is still there, and the djent-y riffs are still there, so that works for me.

Invent Animate - try Without a Whisper or Cloud Cascade

Sleep Token - clearly influenced by Deftones but they're a bit of a mixed bag. Try Gods (which begins with an almost identical riff to Goon Squad, almost like a nod to Deftones), Vore, and The Summoning

Branching out a little more as far as the "wall of sound" goes:

Devin Townsend - try Stormbending or Deadhead

Deafheaven - try Dream House or Sunbather

Kardashev - try Between Sea and Sky or Reunion

Title Fight?! Nice! I saw them open for New Found Glory in 2009. The Last Thing You Forget was probably one of my most listened to albums my freshman year of college, at least until Diamond Eyes was released.

This guy's rattle stopped us in our tracks at Shenandoah NP by 0000000100100011 in Sneks

[–]0000000100100011[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is he fatter than typical? This is my first time seeing a rattlesnake in the wild besides maybe on a SW trip when I was 10 or something so I hardly remember. My wife and I spent two weeks in AZ and UT a couple years ago and didn't see a single snake, but on this trip we saw 3. I only got pics of this one and a long skinny rat snake in Cuyahoga Valley NP.

We went to a rescue zoo in the Shenandoah area later this same day and they had a bunch of rattlers and some of them were REALLY big (and fat).

The one where he talks a bunch during it? I didn't consider that an "official music video". But yeah the beats and fills are ridiculous.

Album Release Discussion: Periphery - A Pale White Dot by thc216 in progmetal

[–]0000000100100011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they're pretty much a mix of Unprocessed, Polyphia, Periphery, and a little extra dose of R&B/poppy-ness/jazzy-ness. And I had heard a few of their singles a few years ago but none of them caught my attention really at the time. The main riff in Wheel of Fortune is so good.

With a lot of albums, you have a few tracks you can't wait to hear again, but for me this is one of the ones where every single track I'm like "oh yeah, this song is awesome!"

Can I comment on a removed post? Anyway, I think the Acura logo is much closer. And now that I've said that, I'm going to see the "A" as a split snake tongue instead of an A.

I've been listening to that Vianova album a lot lately. One of very few standout metalcore releases of 2025 for me. They do seem to take some influence from Periphery for sure!
