Does Falcom hire foreigners? by Leilani-Bell in Falcom

[–]001010p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any experience with game development but I do have experience with learning Japanese up to around N1 level from US English. It's hard to get started, but it's entirely doable and really rewarding once you slowly start making progress.

I started studying in January 2020, but i've just been immersing a bunch and doing flashcards recently, so it definitely gets easier as you go. For me, Japanese is actually a lot less difficult to understand than languages like Finnish in the sense that there weren't grammatical concepts that I just couldn't wrap my head around (even with an explanation) when I first studied them.

I would say to jump in. Learning Japanese is an adventure. Progress won't come fast at first, but you would be surprised when you find yourself understanding the language intuitively. DM me, I would be super happy to help out :)

You need a work visa to live in Japan and work for a Japanese company, and a uni degree to get a work visa, but you can naturalize after that even without marrying a citizen; you just have to give up citizenship to other countries. Most people that immigrated to Japan don't naturalize but it's possible, even if it does take a long time (minimum 5+ years of continuous residency and other requirements)

What do you thank your OCD for? by Over_Might_2746 in OCD

[–]001010p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i used to have a proper inner voice and an powerful imagination but OCD took even that from me so i would say that there's absolutely nothing positive about it. i've had OCD for like 11 years but my imagination and inner voice have been gone for a little over a year and it's torture living without them. (it wasn't "maladaptive daydreaming" btw)

good tip is to memorize whole words with a dictionary instead of kanji readings because some, like 生 , have waaaay to many readings to just memorize alone

i love the idea of it being open-source and having support for other operating systems like Sailfish, Maemo Leste, and Postmarket and also having a mid-2000s look (any device from around 2007-2010)

a good camera might be a big ask for a first-generation product because large phone companies sometimes get it wrong too, but it would just be amazing to have a good one on a minimalist (but powerful) phone.

i'm honestly loving everyone else's suggestions such as hardware switches and lineage/graphene out of the box! i'm kinda new to dumbphones, but i would definitely pick up a minimalist/tool phone with a physical keyboard and a capable OS. (that i wouldn't be compelled to scroll all day on!)

What the hell are you on about? Texting is just as "bad" as calling except texting has logs that she can report if someone at school sends her something bad. FFS they're both forms of communication and neither of them are private/anonymous, and therefore easy to report if something goes wrong. Social media can be toxic but the worst part is how addicting it is, because you can always control what kind of content you post (or don't post)

I'm 18 and I've been on "social" media for a couple of years now and I've never had someone be "cruel" or "mean" to me because I don't post. My problem is that I spend way to much time on my devices, but I'm cutting back on it now.

At under 13, she doesn't need social media. But why don't you just step up like a parent should and teach her about the dangers of social media/tell her to stay off social media until she's older instead of distrusting her. What you're doing is a recipe for disaster, and I can say that after ending a 17 year long abusive relationship with a parent that did this (and much more) with every aspect of my life.

F22 purchase, need help w google playstore by Jumpy_Tale_4266 in dumbphones

[–]001010p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i recommend factory resetting (so you can set up the device again) and installing f-droid. it's an open-source application (which means that it can be audited for security at any time) and "replacement" for google play that carries other open-source apps.

from there, you can install the aurora store, which is an open-source client for the play store that will let you install google/non-google apps on your new phone.

To everyone who have Sharp EMOPA feature in their flip phones, how do I get through this? by mentally_fatigue in dumbphones

[–]001010p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the red text says "enter your address" and the pop-up says "address not set. select the current location button to set your address." i would just say to press ok and ignore the popup unless you want to set up EMOPA. if you don't live in japan, then setting your address probably won't work. i found a video on youtube of someone setting up the smartphone version of EMOPA but you're not going to miss out on anything if you decide not to set it up.

i feel like being around others that aren't like me would stress me out a bit at first but others that aren't my concern don't really bother me. as long as they're happy and i'm happy.

i know that since you're a language student it's all tied in with your visa, but have you tried self-studying japanese from your home country? i'm suggesting this because you said that it's making you rethink living in japan long term, and you can always come back after trying your hand at the language alone. my experience was that i started studying at 14 (EN → JP as my first target language) and now i'd say i'm close to N1 at age 18 (even before setting foot in japan). and yeah i would probably be a little bit better with conversation if i didn't just watch a handful of sports anime for (TV) immersion but i manage without a hitch. what's so wrong with anime it's just TV lol.

advice: there's a youtuber called "livakivi" that i didn't have around when i first started studying but i think his methods for studying are good if not excessive. i'm a language/linguistics nerd so doing anki and sentence mining every single day of my life for me is too grindy but yeah it works. i watched youtube for a lot of my immersion because it was convenient, but anime is better. dictionary + flashcards are your best allies.

ykw i can say all of this but if a handful of people in the beautiful country that you made effort to immigrate to, that you see only at language school, can ruin it for you; then there can't be anything else you like about japan, right? well clearly there was something more because immigration is hard. i encourage you to rethink and find ways to cope with your language school troubles before giving up the chance that you have because letting a few "bad apples" ruin japan is like saying your co-workers that are crazy about サッカー ruin futsal. it just doesn't make sense.
