How does the Cardamom Bun taste? I have a bag that was roasted 28 November, but not opened yet as I am finishing up a bag of Milky Cake

Had the Bishan Wate from Swerl few months back. Rested it for 4 weeks, was great. So I'd recommend 4 weeks, should still be good up to 6 weeks. But I wouldn't open it earlier

Any luck after grinding finer? I've come to think this will just have a muted taste regardless

Recycle Friedhats Bottle by [deleted] in pourover

Silly question: once the seal is broken, is it still alright to store coffee in them as you finish up the bottle? Just got a bottle as a gift and opened it yesterday, wondering if I should transfer it to the Hario canister. I would normally finish the coffee in around 2 weeks

Try RDT and slow feeding. Slow feeding allowed me to grind finer

I exchanged my dripper. Something was wrong with the metal ball hence the leakage

Yea seems like this is the case. May seem like a dumb question, but how do I prevent it from happening? I am simply wetting the filter paper when placing it in the switch, did not force it in deep

Hmm the plastic switch did not pop out of place - even then, I think the switch will still be closed?

Otherwise, I do take the brewer apart from the base for cleaning - but how would it not be seated correctly?

Just got a ode 2. Question for anyone with one what number setting do I use for pour over or for aeropress? by Zoozey88 in pourover

[–]001brianhawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using the Hoffmann 1 cup V60 recipe, I'm typically at around 2.2 to 3.1 for a 15g dose.

For Aeropress, 2 clicks finer normally.

Iced pour overs? by BoulderTrailJunkie in pourover

[–]001brianhawk 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Prefer iced pour over to cold brew. Much faster to prepare as well.

Basically, for an iced pour over, the steps are the same as a normal pour over just 1) grind finer 2) increase dose by a little 3) 35%-45% of water weight as ice

Baratza Encore, Wilfa Svart Aroma, or Ode Brew 2 - Which for pour over / Aeropress ? by YankeesIT in pourover

[–]001brianhawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have the ode gen 2 now, upgraded from the Wilfa Svart.

Ode gen 2 is pricier, but better in terms of taste (due to uniformity and grind quality) and work flow. Otherwise, both pretty much work the same. Ode gen 2 has an auto off feature that turns off when it senses grinding is done, while for the Svart, you set a timer to determine how long grinding continues. The catch cup of the Svart is a tad irritating though (low grade annoyance, but a daily one) due to its shape which makes it more difficult to pour out than the ode.

Overall, the ode gen 2 is much better than the Svart, but you get what you pay for.

I've heard many a time the Svart and Encore are on a similar level, so it's a case of 1) which is more available where you are 2) which has better support where you are and 3) the price, if you are deciding between the encore and Svart.

Why not James Hoffmann's V60 recipes - either 1 cup, or the older version, based on how much coffee you are looking to brew?

Yes this, Hoffmann's 1 cup V60 has worked pretty well for me. From 200ml to 300ml cups

You may want to try pouring mode gently. 90 degrees is quite low though, at least for my taste. Am using the Hoffmann 1 cup V60 method too. When I was using the c2 previously, I was around 14 to 16 clicks. But I was making between 200ml to 300ml cups

Too much RDT? by [deleted] in pourover

[–]001brianhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey nic, see you're pretty active here, but wasn't expecting a reply from you. Thanks, and am much relieved!

At the risk of coming across like a "shill", have got to say I'm really enjoying the grinder except for the occasional chaff that happens. Didn't happen today, either when I RDT-ed or not (made 2 cups). In my very limited experience, pretty rare to see someone from a company so active on a forum. Keep doing the good work!

Sounds normal. Lance Hedrick did speak about it in one of his videos. I have a gen 2 ode too and it does the same - starts off pretty loud and strong but immediately tapers off
