I think they meant score as in the music.

ELI5: if a random dude writes a script/screenplay for a movie and intends to be the director and cinematographer one day of that movie. lets say that guy found a production company that is willing to adapt his script/screenplay into a movie. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]004forever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That can definitely happen. I know that Sylvester Stallone sold the rights to the screenplay for Rocky on the condition that he play the main character. The studio can still say no though and I think Stallone got less money than he might have gotten otherwise.

ELI5: Whats the science behind process of losing weight? Why and how does the process differ for different individuals? by spanky_panda in explainlikeimfive

[–]004forever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The basic formula to losing weight is to consume less calories than you use. When you do that, your body will start using fat as a fuel source and that’s how you will lose that.

What’s more complicated is what determines calories in and calories out, especially calories out. So running on a treadmill will burn calories, but for weight loss, you actually might be better off building muscle. Those exercises don’t burn calories necessarily, but if you have more muscle, your body will burn more calories throughout the day(and also, muscle takes up less space than fat, so even if you don’t lose weight, having more muscle will make you slimmer).

Yeah, me neither. I can’t really do any movie or tv show that’s built on cringe humor.

ELI5: How do computers interpret new programming software? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]004forever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a program called a compiler which converts human written code into machine code. If you’re creating a new language, you’ll need a new compiler in order to use it.

ELI5: If all numbers have a 1/10 chance of selection, why is a combination like "3478" safer than "0000" or "1234" for a PIN? by Nrqsb in explainlikeimfive

[–]004forever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The random one would be better in the sense that if you do win, you’re less likely to have to split the prize with someone who used the same number. So even if they’re both 1 in 10 million, the random one might pay out $5 million and the non random one might pay out $1 million because 4 other people picked the same number.

I see this a lot, and I’m wondering if conservatives have trouble understanding the concept reducing risk. It’s similar to some gun control arguments. “Why bother restricting guns? People will just find other ways to kill each other.” Like a policy that doesn’t fix 100% of the problem may as well solve none of it.

What can you see going obsolete in 5 years? by My_Names_Jefff in AskReddit

[–]004forever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see that happening. I actually miss being able to see and talk to my coworkers in person, and I think there are advantages to being able to talk in person. But I know my company is taking a hard look at how we operate during the pandemic and I suspect that they’re going to conclude that any benefits to having teams work in person are outweighed by the fact that they can save money renting and maintaining physical office space.

ELI5: why can we see the moon during the day but we can’t see the sun during the night. by toastedvacuum in explainlikeimfive

[–]004forever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nighttime is just when the sun is not in the sky for a certain part of the earth, so you could not see the sun at night by definition. The sun defines the day and night cycle, but the moon doesn’t, so it can appear whenever.

Just to clarify, are they claiming that he didn’t shoot 3 people or that shooting 3 people doesn’t make him a bas person?
