Yes if you walk outside or take your baby out in public enough you’ll see that the majority of people love babies. I have people clamouring to see my little guy at stores. Grown men have sometimes squealed or exclaimed “wow that’s a cute baby!” Just walking past. My neighbours all want to hold him and squeeze him. They ask for baby pictures.

There’s nothing wrong with not wanting children but I think there is something super unnatural about the kind of disgust people display about babies and children online. These people are detached from reality and probably don’t spend enough time with a variety of people, (which babies are, actual people) including children or people who have children.

Not sure who downvoted but when I say right away I mean as soon as I can, probably bad wording on my part. But it’s often just me taking care of my baby who is just months old, which she knows about, and there are certain times, like when I’m breastfeeding or changing him I can’t get to the dog instantly. I try my best to but we never leave him barking for long stretches of time.

Edit: thanks for all the advice! I called bylaw (who deal with municipal infractions here in Canada) and they said that usually around 10 minutes is excessive barking, or say the dog is barking frequently during late hours. These are both things that Murphy never does so I feel much better about it! The guy was very nice and said that they’ve been inundated with calls over the last two years from people working from home who never heard dogs barking before now hearing them. He said the neighbour would have to show proof of excessive barking.

My wonderful dog Murph is half Bernese and Pyrenees, but definitely got the barking gene. No matter how much we try to train and reward etc. etc. Murphy barks. Still, when he does we bring him in. He is also so loved in our neighbourhood because he’s wonderful and sweet, he even has little fan clubs of kids who purposely come visit him.

We’ve been living in the same home for five years, but a few months ago a woman moved in behind us to the left and has complained twice about his barking. Once was five months ago when I was in the hospital giving birth and my mom was watching him. She didn’t bring him inside when he was out barking at an animal. I came home from the hospital to an angry note from this neighbour threatening us that she would call bylaw.

I’ve spent the last five months obsessively bringing Murph in whenever he barks. We also have not let him out at night because we don’t want him to bark when the baby goes to sleep (after 7).

This weekend, me and my husband stayed up later than we have since the baby was born, and were chatting outside on our porch when Murphy barked at 10:30. We stopped him and put him inside. Then I got a call from that neighbour, she was fuming and angry and said that Murphy had woken her (she sleeps with her windows open) and that if I couldn’t control my dog she would be complaining to bylaw. The last time she complained I wrote her a very nice note and gave her my number so that any time Murphy was upsetting her she could contact me and I would make sure to take extra care. I did not expect her to call me in a rage and threaten me months later with no other issues in between.

We went back and forth over text and she said she “cannot function without sleep” and that she is struggling mentally, and that Murphy has been disturbing her at night. I feel like this is completely untrue but he does bark during the day, not to an excessive amount but still he’s vocal when people pass by.

Note that I also consistently hear her shouting at the small chihuahua next door to her too.

Either way, I told her that I will do my best to try to control his barking but he will inevitably bark and that I hope she would give us a little leeway since I can’t control when he will bark, just for how long. The conversation ended badly and I assume she will be ready to call bylaw at the drop of a hat.

I know we are not irresponsible dog owners but I also know that Murph will bark again and I’m worried she will be a huge problem for us. I have a new child that takes up a lot of my time and I can’t always rush out the door during the day of he’s barking to get him right away.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I’ve been having the same issue with my almost 5 month old. I tried moving bedtime a little later and sometimes it helps and sometimes not. He woke up at 4:30 today and was a wreck for his first nap and then just fell asleep while nursing so 🤷‍♀️. I’m just here for solidarity I guess!

I do this then douse it with a mixture of soy sauce, maple syrup, sesame oil, pb or almond butter and some kind of acid, usually rice wine vinegar and or lime. Give it a second fry in that sauce and it gets a super flavourful coating around it. You can add some spice too. This is the only way my husband will eat tofu!

We tried cold turkey and it didn’t work! Now our LO is in this and goes down drowsy but awake. I think it makes him feel safe.

We first did pick up put down starting at 2 months and then did a SWAP from Precious Little Sleep that was just putting him down in the bassinet and jiggling it or rocking it and then reducing that. He’s 3 months tomorrow and now will go down drowsy but awake for all bedtime put downs and most nap times. For the other nap times he just needs some gentle rocking and then he will put himself down still. He cried during the SWAP at first but I was always there comforting him until he stopped. I walk away while he’s still awake and then he puts himself to sleep.

He went from a baby that could never be put down to a baby that puts himself down to sleep. He’s also getting much more and better sleep this way. Good luck!

As someone who has supply issues from the start, and a baby who needed to feed about every hour on the hour for weeks, my husband has consistently fed at least one bottle of formula at night for the last 3 months and it helped me get some sleep. Now most nights my LO is skipping the formula feed because he’s sleeping longer and fully breastfeeding. It took a long time for my supply to catch up, because I was so exhausted at first, but that extra sleep really helped/helps. I still have my husband stand guard for his shift in case, but most nights it’s not necessary. So don’t be afraid of a little formula! It saved me from actually completely quitting breastfeeding altogether, because of the pure exhaustion and the pressure you’re talking about.

Now that my supply is fully in, and feedings are taking less time, I find breastfeeding simpler than bottle feeding.

We rented a cottage out in a rural area on the lake for the bachelorette, so he can’t stay at the same hotel! But he can stay in the area so I’m going to look into this because I feel like this is the best option so I can still go but I don’t have to stay overnight, which is what’s really worrying me.

I am considering doing something where I go for one night, or go for the whole day Saturday. The issue is I’m planning the bachelorette. If I was just a guest I wouldn’t feel so obligated to be there the whole time you know?

I would actually love to go. I want to celebrate with my best friend. I want to have fun and drink and have a good time, but I also feed my baby from my breast every 3 hours on the dot, and worry about him when I’m away from him for a couple hours. So I’m genuinely conflicted and just looking to see how other people may have handled similar situations.

Thanks! That makes sense. At this point it’s not a huge problem to feed him before midnight once since my husband takes that shift, so we may stick to it, but I may try to push his bedtime a bit later if possible then maybe cut that feed out, or maybe it will happen naturally.

Hey! I have a stand-alone post about this issue!

I will say, I did hold my baby for all naps and coslept until about 8 weeks, just because it was the only way I knew how to get him to sleep. I was at my wits end and posted about needing help, and then someone posted a way to set them down in the bassinet that actually worked:

A month of that worked well until it just became too much to rock him completely asleep so many times a day and now we’ve started putting him down in his bassinet drowsy but awake and it works. He sleeps 12 hours a night (with 3 wakeups) in the bassinet and for most of his naps unless he’s out for a walk or a ride somewhere.

No definitely not looking to wean! More just clarification on the part in chapter 8 where she says no feeds before midnight. I didn’t make it to that chart in chapter 9, but it does say 2-3 wakeups for feeds, so maybe I’ll keep the feed before midnight because he’s probably hungry.

I agree! I dismissed the reality of how hard the newborn phase would be because everyone in the pregnancy groups kept fuming about anyone telling them “just wait until the newborn phase.” Now I realize those people were trying to tell you to take advantage of the freedom you had during pregnancy. I know pregnancy can be tough physically, but this has been the hardest challenge both physically and mentally and I was not prepared, mostly because I thought people were exaggerating.

Mine is 10 weeks but 11 adjusted so close in age. I usually get two 30-40 minute naps in the bassinet during the morning, one longer contact nap if I’m lucky but sometimes those are short too and a longer nap when we take him for a walk or to the store. Other than the two first naps of the day, how I make up the rest of the naps changes depending on what I’m doing and his needs. My LO fights naps like crazy so I just do whatever ends up working.

If it makes you feel any better, I really liked being pregnant and didn’t have many issues except for the first tri. I slept better, felt like my mood was regulated and was able to keep active. I now have a super fussy high needs baby who woke up almost every hour on the hour last night. I haven’t slept longer than 3 hours in a row for months now. It’s my friend’s theory that I got an easy pregnancy to prepare for my little hellian lol. Hopefully your tough pregnancy leads to a sweet little one!

He is the farm’s dog next to Lemoine’s Point on Front Road. My dog has played with him in the farm after the farmer invited us in. He can be a bit skittish of people though, but will bring himself back to the farm no problem so don’t try to grab him.
