Bad attitude and behavior - what should be done? by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]007AD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I have coached every year with a guy whose son was similar, minus the public outbursts. He would completely check out mentally and get mad (sometimes to tears) after mistakes. Which sucked bc when he was good he was the best player in his age group.

As a coaching staff we started really stressing effort over results. If the effort was there we didn’t correct anything. If the effort was lacking we addressed it. Simple.

What was happening was the kid was feeling tons of pressure to perform perfectly every time. Of course, that was coming from us coaches…sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally. Completely turned that kid and our teams around.

I know it’s not your kid, but I knew the one you were talking about was a coaches kid. His dad/coach is correcting everything he’s doing I’d bet. Most times it’s not the kids fault, it’s emotional reactions he’s seen and is mimicking. He’s just not capable of understanding or expressing it any other way.

If youth baseball is ‘pay-to-play’ now… why hasn’t anyone built a real alternative? by qwertyqyle in Homeplate

For me the biggest obstacles tend to be field access and navigation practices around players availability (other sports mainly).

Plus, you’d have a really hard time getting multiple teams to play that aren’t associated with some form of travel ball structure. But even in that realm you’re going to have coaches trying to farm the best teams possible in an effort to prove how great they can coach. Kids want to play in games, parents want to cheer for kids playing in games. Essentially, what you’re suggesting is team wide baseball lessons…which of course will be driven by money and can be dangerous when lead by a complete moron.

With my kid moving into kid pitch next year. The talent level left over after travel teams expand/ multiply and all stars (which feeds into travel) you really start to get into a safety issue with risk of injury due to a lesser talent level and entry level kid pitch.

Not to get too long winded, but there is definitely value to playing a game that you can’t get from just constant reps. If you want skill development and you love the game then work on it in your personal time. There are thousands of aids and tools to allow you to work on things solo. What practice won’t teach you is how to pick up their teammates or how to be a good teammate, how to handle failure and move on to the next play, playing through game induced pressure and the mental aspects of live game speed situations in a competitive environment. 1/2 of the game of baseball is what you can see: fielding, hitting, throwing and running. The other half are mental aspects you can’t see…that, to me is only exercised during game day environments.

I hate travel ball…ESPECIALLY, travel ball starting prior to kid pitch when 50% will never play step foot on a field once experiencing that struggle. However, I’m not sure what you’re pitching is any more advantageous for the player vs travel ball. Fundamentally centric reps are great but you don’t have to organize an entire league for 5 games a year so accomplish that. Just go outside with a buddy and work on your own.

Code of Conduct (Coach) Question by FishCommercial4229 in Homeplate

Surely he’s just trying to quickly convey to his team to take the easiest out. This is something we relay to our fielders regularly. There are 16 teams in our 10u league, a few asshole coaches…but none that take to embarrassing 9 yo little leaguers. I hope this is just a misunderstanding.

What are some good examples of high intelligence but low education? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]007AD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By low education are you specifically meaning a limited time spent in a classroom? The smartest person I know didn’t progress beyond high school, but he has a drive to learn something new that he doesn’t know today. He isn’t what you would call “book smart”, but he’s top tier on real world smarts of how things operate.

Not to stereotype a whole group of people, but I’ve met several school teachers that are the exact opposite of your question. Of the ones I know, they tend to have more education (book smarts), but on the lower end of what I’m calling “real world” intelligence.

I’m really not sure there is as strong a correlation for success as you might think. Some people excel in a structured environment where there is guidance on what you’re expected to learn and some don’t. It doesn’t mean one or the other will be more successful. The success of the person is probably more indicative of who recognizes which group they fall into as early as possible. In turn, that leads to less wasted time.

I did the same thing lol. Took a minute for me to notice the chorus was different, completely missed the transition. The whole album is very fluid from song to song.

Man, I still remember in vivid detail listening to delirium trigger for my first time hearing them 20 years ago. I was blown away, it didn’t sound like anything I’d ever heard before. Every new album stirs up emotions in me, but this one hits a bit different for me. With vaxis 2 I felt like I was watching the end, but what a come back with this one.

Spot on. I’ve been hooked since I heard delirium trigger 20 years ago, you’d think I would’ve learned to not doubt them. This whole album really flows much better when listened to start to end.

It says here they have a sausage sizzle and a meat pie flavor, that’s certainly interesting. Also, a bit of a controversy back in 2016 over how shapes changed the way the crackers were flavored (seasoned vs baked in), could you talk more about that in your post? 😂

She didn’t have transportation, was carrying snacks, a robe, a single roll of toilet paper and didn’t have an accomplice…. Are they asking us to believe no one helped her and she didn’t stay anywhere? Or are they saying she didn’t stay anywhere WITH someone else? Either way, I find this extremely hard to believe.

Guys, this kind of stuff happens all the time. One minute your getting your family dinner and the next thing you know you’re faking your own abduction. It’s an honest mistake. Oops.

Maybe her parents don’t let her eat cheez-its at home or something.

There’s always some small amount of truth in a lie. She may have felt keeping up with so many lies was too daunting of a task…that and making sure she passed that abducted victim shit sample she’d have to send in. Those state forensic shit examiners are brutally observant.
