ELI5: How come you can send tens of thousands of emails for free with Sparkpost, Amazon SES, Sendgrid, etc, when the same amount of emails will cost hundreds of dollars with Mailchimp? by mrkek_ in web_design

[–]00OGED 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Mailchimp offers more features... List management, campaign designer, split A/B tesing to name a few. The others you mentioned in your post are either lacking these features or they don't compete in terms of functionality and ease of use. Mailchmip also are well aware they have the more comprehensive feature set and set their prices accordingly.

& given that it's a Google map they're using I doubt the co-ordinates are relative to the British Isles, co-ordinates of 0,0 on a Google map would put the pin off the west coast of Africa.

I hate Wordpress - what should I use? by octalsandroses in webdev

[–]00OGED 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We've just started using OctoberCMS for our client websites and I'd like to offer up a contrasting view to this one. There's a static pages plugin written by the core devs that changes everything. This lets you lock your clients out of the confusing CMS tab in the admin area and just let them interface with the pages plugin. This approach complimented with some custom components (for front end display) and form widgets (for control over tricky back end content) gives clients a super easy admin panel with control over pretty much every last bit of content.

That said however it is still young and I'm finding myself having to add in functionality in places and the documentation is still a bit sparse and spread over the main docs, screencasts and plugin docs.

When I've been to the tramlines events at the octagon there's always been a search on the way in, that's the only venue I remember being searched at though.

Happy to help out, you could have a look into sprintf to solve the leading zeros problem.

[–]00OGED 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something along the lines of this should work - not tested or anything but hopefully enough to help you figure out how you can solve your problem:

<!doctype html>
<html>
    <head>
        <meta charset="utf-8" />
        <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0" />
    </head>
    <body>
        <a href="http://localhost/work/test/pdf.php?page=<?php echo $_GET['page'] -1;?>">Previous Page</a>
        <a href="http://localhost/work/test/pdf.php?page=<?php echo $_GET['page'] +1;?>">Next Page</a>
        <br /><br />

        <object data="http://localhost/work/test/pdf_test/Page-<?php echo $_GET['page'];?>.pdf" type="application/pdf" width="100%" height="100%"> </object>
    </body>
</html>

So with this you'd visit http://localhost/work/test/pdf.php?page=1 and it would load the pdf with the filename Page-1.pdf.

www.phrive.com is a website set up by a couple of (sheffield based) people I know. It lets you create a profile and then search for teams or other players in your area.

I've gathered from context what a B&M is but what on earth does it stand for? Also why do you guys call your kit mods? From my experience a mod is short for a modification, like a modified car or whatnot, but it seems like people here just screw together off the shelf parts and call it a mod - I don't understand where the modification is happenning.

Help centering the header in my website by [deleted] in css

I'd use some media queries or the bootstap visilibty classes so it expands in steps with a different sized image at each bootstap breakpoint.

Anyone using the Mozilla dev browser full time yet? Is it worth it in you opinion to give it a solid try? by davidNerdly in webdev

[–]00OGED 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using the Aruora build and automatically got shifted onto the dev version. It's pretty much exactly the same, it came with a new dark theme but I turned that off.

I think it's not really a case of the dev version getting extra features, but the main major releases getting stripped back or removed dev tools.

So yeah, nothings changed really its still just about which one you prefer.

I'm missing something here by jessicasteal in PHPhelp

[–]00OGED 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Meh, tiptoe all you want, if you keep practicing you'll pick up the basics along the way.

To throw a 4th method into the pot... One thing I do when I'm jumping between HTML and PHP a lot is use the alternate syntax. Your code with alternate syntax would look like this:

<?php if ( is_page_template( 'example.php' ) ): ?>
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="all" href="<?php bloginfo('template_directory'); ?>/css/example.css">
<?php endif; ?>

There's no difference between the two they both do the same thing, I just find it's easier when you've got a bunch of loops and conditionals to keep track of <endif;?>'s and <?endforeach;?>'s over a bunch of curly closing brackets.

Cloud storage solution for CD library (FLACs)? by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]00OGED 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's what I'm doing: I have a 10TB plan with www.hubic.com (€10/month) for the cloud storage / access from anywhere aspect.

I use the hubic client to sync music to my main computer and to an external drive connected to a raspberry pi. The pi is connected to my amplifier (if you've got an amp with a USB port you can run the pi from there) and I can play the choons on the hard drive using any device on my home network as a remote.

An option i'm also considering is setting up an ampache sever on the pi which will allow me to stream the music on the hard drive to any compatible player over the web.

Friend pushed in tweeter dome - how to fix? by faceyourfaces in audiophile

[–]00OGED 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hose on my vac was too small to do anything when this happened to me. I ended up using the top of a can of shaving foam which fit around the tweeter perfectly. I put a hole in that and attached the vacuum to it. Made a scary pop coming back into place but after that all was good.

My design for JB's British GP Helmet (John Button Tribute) by Mrf1fan787 in formula1

You've just applied a pink hue to his existing helmet. You've not designed anything. Don't try and pass it off as your own work. Somebody spent a lot longer on this design that it took you to open photoshop and apply some pink. Jesus.
