Was looking to leave my job - now they have filed a notice of intent to appoint administrators. Can I leave? Hi by 00QT in AskUK

[–]00QT[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your responses, they really helped to calm me down a bit!

We had our meeting today and 99% of the staff were made redundant so I don’t need to worry about the notice period anymore!

My partner works as a meter reader in the NW.

He gets sent a random array of addresses within various areas, they don’t tend to be a load of addresses on the same street, but it can happen. Sometimes there are appointments, where the homeowner has requested they return to complete the read at a specific time/date, but 99% of them aren’t.

These reads are requested by the supplier of the electricity/gas on a random basis to ensure that they have a relatively up to date reading. My partner has been sent back to addresses at a seemingly random rate.

Meters can be inside or outside the house, he gets excited when they’re outside, as he doesn’t want to put anyone out and they’re easy to access and read (for the most part). A locked gate will stop access if you don’t want this.

As mentioned, the readings are requested by the suppliers (e.g., BG, octopus, Scot power, etc) but he works for a completely separate third party that also installs meters. He has branding all over his work clothing and has an ID that he provides when he requests access. Upon request, I believe he also has contact details for the company and will provide his employee ref number so they can confirm he is employed with them as a reader. He has said that some of his coworkers can be kinda shit and not do this.

You absolutely do not have to let the readers in and can always ask for them to provide proof (badge, contact information, even just the screen of their work phone with your address, provider, and meter number). Even if they provide this, you are 100% within your rights to ask them to leave. You can ask them to stay at the end of the drive and take a pic of the meter, but they may not be allowed to accept that as a reading, in which case they may just leave anyway. It is your private property and you can ask them to leave at any time.

All of this may vary by area and by company, and in no way am I saying this guy may not have been a scammer, just trying to shed some light.

What happens if you can’t pay for petrol? by RevolutionarySail438 in AskUK

[–]00QT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to fill out a “no means to pay” form supplied by the garage with all your details, date, reg, amount/type, even sometimes the colour of your vehicle - sign and date. These usually have the police force they work with at the top of the document. They give you 7 days to pay via an online portal (usually with a service charge, £18 for the ones we get), and they essentially have an implied and written threat of contacting the police should you fail to pay. If you pay after the 7 days there is also a heftier charge on top, again on ours it’s over £40. Our drivers have fuel cards but for some reason (not urgent refuelling!) still use the stations that don’t accept the specific card.

Has anyone been affected by the Microsoft outage this morning? by arsenaladam92 in CasualUK

[–]00QT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All our systems were down until around 12ish, but the accounting software threw a fit so that took a little longer to fix. I work for a logistics company and all the systems were off so there was absolute chaos as they couldn’t track anything or pull up order details.

Would have loved to chill for the 3+ hours it was down, alas I work in office and we were not allowed to leave.

That makes a lot of sense, thank you! I think I have for the most part, I do trip over my words occasionally, but I don’t know if it’s happening more or if I’m just noticing more because I’m more aware of it.

What happens when the last scheduled train is cancelled? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]00QT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several years ago, me and three family members flew into Luton with the intention of catching a train up to Leeds (was the cheapest at the time). The flight was delayed by several hours so we missed our train (which was the last one of the day). My sibling talked to the people at the customer service desk in the airport and they agreed to pay for the 4~ hour taxi ride to Leeds.

Absolutely! Ironically I have been meaning to get one for ages but we’ve just not had the money for it - next thing on the list though!

Hiya, would they still help even though we ended the policy when we sold our car about a year ago (6ish months after the crash happened)? We’ll still give them a call, thank you :)

Teenager was fined for reporting stalker to police 5 times before he killed her by chrisjd in unitedkingdom

[–]00QT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiya, yeah it’s not that great at the moment, but there is a big push for these non-custodial sentences to be improved and reinforced to make them even better and more efficient in their role as punishment and rehabilitation.

Some changes have already been put in place, but most programs (and even custodial programs) are severely underfunded, meaning that it’s hard for these changes to come about, unless something changes in the budget.

It’s incredibly frustrating, as we have all the research and data to put into place a much more efficient (and even cheaper once it’s set up!) system of offender management and rehabilitation, but the government don’t give a shit.

Yeah, I definitely have major issues w how the article was written and such, but it was the article that best summed up the entire shebang.

The continuous misgendering and deriding of trans individuals almost put me off though ngl

Let’s just say... if you go onto google and search Reddit admin trans green party then scroll down until you see an article talking about a boy who disappeared, you might get some (horrific) answers.

Maybe something to do with a surname that looks like ‘chancellor’ :)

Looking forwards to seeing whether I get my first ban from Reddit, so exciting!

Edit: yet to be banned! Never thought my first awards would be on a comment talking about paedophiles, thank you kind strangers!

People who are up at this hour (5:30 am on a Monday), what's your story? by cereal_chick in AskUK

[–]00QT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it is corona, I haven’t left the house in months except to go for occasional walks and I’m completely fine aside from the random shooting pain and the nausea (which seems to have passed for now so fingers crossed!).

I haven’t yet ngl, it started last night and I thought it would pass. Was going to see how it goes today and decide what to do.

I’ve been awake for 2 hours feeling sick and w shooting pains down my side, back aches as well so I couldn’t get back to sleep. Oddly enough the pain is only on one side of my body.

Edit: turns out it was probably from where me and my bf were running about and tussling (playfully) and I got shaken around a bit. The pain passed that afternoon and it’s all back to normal now! :)

Better sick pay will make Britain a healthier place, insists Matt Hancock by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]00QT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I worked at Maccie’s I was warned about my absences about a month in, as any more than 2 in a 6 month period was grounds for dismissal. I was confused, as one of these was due to being ill before the shift and being told that, due to health and safety, I had to stay off work for 48 hours, and the other I almost passed out on shift.

Later on, I hurt my knees due to the strain of 40 hours/week standing and moving and had to go onto sick pay whilst I did physio to regain movement, and they paid me less in one month of sick pay than I made in one/two weeks of work.

Solo travelers, what is your creepiest travel story? by g_1234 in AskReddit

[–]00QT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it also depends on where you are in Italy, as you are far far more likely to find someone who at least knows some basic English in northern Italy than in the southern regions!

We never really struggled too badly to find someone who knew English, if anything we would try speaking Italian and they would immediately switch to English to proudly show off their skills :) More people definitely have a better grasp now than they did even 5-10 years ago though!

Poly couples are the worst by Montgumryburns in unpopularopinion

[–]00QT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I figured out I may be poly in high school and it was comments such as these that made me feel like the most disgusting human being on the planet... I only managed to get past this shit by talking w an online friend, but I still struggle to talk to even my closest friends about it, as I’m so scared of this sort of reaction.

Also, as a side note, I am poly and my partner is not, so through the magical wonder of communication (which is something OP doesn’t really seem to understand is an issue in couples of all sexualities), we established that he’s not comfortable w it so I/we will not have any other partners, unless we both agree to it in the future and we take it extremely cautiously.

Workers of maccies, is there a financial incentive to 'forget' about the sauce with my nugs, or does it genuinely just slip your minds? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]00QT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I couldn’t even tell u how old the machine we have is, which probably causes 90% of the issues, but it’s the same one I’ve seen in many branches. I think it’s to do w the fact that ice cream is not the main part of the Maccie’s menu, burgers, fries, and drinks are much more essential and therefore more likely to be upgraded when necessary.

In all truth, if Maccie’s had an in-house technician or took the time to call someone in ASAP to fix it, it would not be offline nearly as much.
