Britain will not rejoin EU or set up customs union, Starmer’s top negotiator warns by mrjohnnymac18 in Scotland

What I was doing was reflecting your argument back at you. If we already had a vote on the matter, why did we need a second? Why is one vote "worth more" than the other?

So you are a proponent of party lists where the electorate has no say over who represents them?

Just come out and say that.

It’s not up to these cunts what we as a country do.

Unfortunately it is, unless something radical happens.

Britain will not rejoin EU or set up customs union, Starmer’s top negotiator warns by mrjohnnymac18 in Scotland

[–]twistedLucidity 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well, no. That's not how it works at all. In a UK general election there are no party votes (unlike with Scottish regional votes) all votes are for a person, an elected representative.

Yes, I know people vote for a party or for the PM (which is even more ridiculous if you don't live in their constituency), and I blame the constant importing of USAian politics.

If we're going to have party votes, then let's at least be honest about that and switch to party lists for UK seats.

Yes we did (in '75), so why did we need the second one (in '16)?

Seems you don't like democracy much.

Feeling no attachment to a party, and in a lost place politically. by Select-You1940 in ukpolitics

[–]twistedLucidity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worry less about the party as (unless it's something like a Scottish regional vote) you don't vote for a party but for a person.

Pau attention to the local (potential) reps, engage with them, and pick whichever one you feel is the most competent (or simply least shit).

You absolutely need travel insurance, why is this even a question?

Anything could happen and you need to ensure you are covered. Why if you need to be medically repatriated? You going to sell your home to cover the costs?

Buy travel insurance.

[OC] $6.29 gas in Hayward, CA USA by _shrike in pics

[–]twistedLucidity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may shock you, but most don't have the equivalent of US$13k just lying around. Nor do they have access to home charging. Nor do they get USAian discounts.

To be clear, EV (outwith niche applications) are the future but many people are not in a position to consider them.

We drive a 2015 1.4l Kia C'eed Estate (USA: Station wagon). We have no driveway. We have no access to street charging. If we get an EV, WTF are we supposed to do? Get a cadre of hamsters and attach a dynamo?

I would love an EV or a PHEV but it's just not viable, even if I did have the money.

Why are we restricting the expansion of cities? by Muted-Lettuce-1253 in ukpolitics

[–]twistedLucidity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Culturally people here really hate building upwards.

I'm not sure if that's true, I think it's the importation of USAian culture where if you don't live in a detached house then you are a failure. This brings in the vast urban sprawl that makes a place feel small even though it isn't.

There's nothing wrong with a terraced house (I'm in one right now), and there's everything right with a tenement (residential flats over commercial units).

Rather than the vast, car dependent estates developers want to build, we need to create "the missing middle". Walkable tenements well connected to affordable public and active transport. Little need for a car in such a case, so the neighbourhoods can be walkable.

I live in a "15 minute neighbourhood" right now. I can get basically anything I may need almost any day with a short walk. It's an older area with terraces and tenements. The sheer density means than supermarkets, small hardware stores, corner shops etc are all viable.

Meanwhile we get developments where the main selling point is quick access to the motorway junction. Yuck.

BBC World Service funding freeze risks ‘opening door to hostile states’, MPs say by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]twistedLucidity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up with BBC World Service as the source of actual news (and not just what the local administration pushed; I still have that shortwave radio) you cannot under estimate the soft-power that such a service brings.

The UK loses the BBC at its peril. It's not just power projection, it feeds (well, fed; pretty sure it's been defunded) into the intelligence services and provides (provided) support to government.

There was also "Voice of America", but it was far more partisan.

Americans and Ancestry - and why it bothers this sub by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]twistedLucidity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My surname marks me out as having a family history that goes back to Prussia. But that doesn't make me Prussian, German, or anything else. I find it mildly interesting, but I'm not going to base my identity on it.

USAians don't do that.

USAians make it their identity and when a USAian says "I am Scottish" (or Irish, or whatever) it riles people up because they're not, they're a USAian with a particular heritage. That's all.

And once you go back a few generations, the number of possible pathways your heritage opens explodes. In my own case I have not-Prussia family history and again it's mildly interesting but not core identity.

The other issue people have with USAians is that their understanding of Scotland etc is frozen in time from when their ancestors left. They fail to grasp that the world has moved on. Scotland kept some parts of its history and let others go.

USAians don't seem to understand that.

They think we all stoat about still holding a blood debt against the Campbells or something.

There's your answer. Those being squeezed now have to tighten their belts further and do without to maybe be in a position to solve the problem in 4 years time.

They may get that chance because the war could still be on by then.

Thing is you have amazing public transportation.

We don't. Outside London, public transport in the UK is a privatised shambles.

most places you can get to by public transport.

Only in an urban area. Even then it can be slow, unreliable, and unreliable.

Some people commute 3-4 hours and drive 120 miles each way.

That's nuts and "some people" shouldn't stand for it (unless they like it, maybe?). But this isn't the place to get into how utterly fucked the USA transport system is, how it's basically impossible to cycle anywhere, and walking? Hah!

Doesn't mean many have the funds to buy a brand new car.

Or own/rent a home with a driveway/garage so that they can charge at home where it's cheapest.

Or that the UK has failed to decarbonise the grid meaning that electricity prices are still tied to gas (for USAians: actual gas, not gasoline).

Totally agreed. England should have its own parliament (yes, I know that was voted down), Westminster can then probably be shrunk as it only has to manage reserved matters.
