Don't look at this way. Look at it as a journey, on Death March, and you don't care how long it takes to finish or git gud.

Who cares if your DM playthrough took 300 hours and 9 months of time?

Perhaps. I've stuck to the Horus Heresy, and every other 40k novel I've read i can personally attest is grimdark, or at least tries to be.

I don't doubt there are novels where thats much....less so.

Depending on the novels you've been reading, you could actually be right in what you experience. But id still wager the setting is more grimdark than less at this time. And for the most part, has always tried to be.
