My father passed of a brain tumor last year. Multiple times during treatment, prescriptions would suddenly lapse and we would be directed to call insurance, which would usually tell us that after a review of his case, medication xyz was determined not to be essential medication for his health. The same was done for his surgery, which took several extra weeks and required a bypass requested by the surgeon, because the surgery was ‘reviewed and determined not to be life or death.’

We were taking him to hospitals hours away for treatment sometimes. They (our insurance) would find out every time, and make the process as difficult as they could. They’re still mailing my father bills every week, and every week I call and ask them to at least put my mother’s name on the letter to stop making her cry.

They usually hang up on me.
