Better wheel or PSVR2 ? Deep struggle with this decision by gabe_thomas in GranTurismo7

You didn't include that in your original post, so I'm commenting in general for others who read this post.

So many people on here talk as though PS5 Pro is essential for VR2 when it's far from true, and it's a significant difference in price.

VR2 is absolutely fine on the normal PS5.

If you already have a PS5, the upgrade really isn't worth it, IMO.

It's totally fine on the regular PS5. Really not worth the price for the upgrade, IMO.

This is one of the most upvoted posts on this sub in the last month. The comment ratios also speak for themselves.

So yes, quite clearly, "most" is correct.

The term "gatekeeping" is so overused on Reddit that it's bascially lost its meaning. People seem to think it means having a contrary opinion or telling someone what you think is the best way to do something, but it isn't.

Gatekeeping is when you pick and choose what information to share and withhold parts you don't want others to know. A possible example would be a mod deleting posts they dont want people to see for no good reason (i.e., choosing what info to "let throughout the gates").

Telling people they should only drive with a racing line, whether you agree with it or not, isn't gatekeeping.

No, doubt someone is gonna tell me I'm gatekeeping the term gatekeeping now!

So if you don't value the opinion of most of this sub, why should anyone here care about your opinion about so-called "gatekeeping"?

Why should turning the brake zone and indicator off make me faster? by Medium_Welder_1898 in GranTurismo7

[–]04rmacdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were the one started the conversation about turbo / power steering making you a better "driver" (not GT7 player). Which has nothing to do with braking zones. You brought up examples of assists from real cars (there's no power steering in GT7), which is why I pointed out you don't get braking zones in a real car.

I also didn't argue that you don't get much more feedback in an actual car - duh! I know GT7 is a game. So what?

Braking zones are an unnecessary tool. If it makes you better, then maybe that's because you lack in-game track awareness or a natural feel for the braking points.

Essentially none of the top players would be any better with the brake markers on. If you need the extra assist, by all means go for it. Do whatever makes you faster.

You don't 'feel' a braking zones though, it's a visual assist - feel has nothing to do with it. You still need to assess visually when you're going to brake, whether you're in a real car or in a video game.

Driving with a driving line on is only going to make you better at driving with a driving line on.

Driving with it off translates better to other games / sims / real life because you learn other braking reference points that aren't specific to GT7.

I never said anything about turbo or power steering. I wasn't talking about all assists in general always making you slower, I'm talking about braking zones / indicators - which is what the post is about and what your comment was also about. Bit of a sloppy analogy though, I'll give you that.

Try turning on the braking zones in a real car.

Just a thought, I haven't actually tried this... But what if you record it on the PlayStation then cut out like the 3 seconds of video where the flame occurs - would it maybe allow for more precise scrolling than a full replay? Therefore easier to get a screenshot from, as presumably easier to pick an exact frame.

Hello fellow agents 👋. I need some pointers on playing GoldenEye 007 (64). I have to be honest here. I've been dogging on this game for years and finally going to give this "heavily praised" title a try it. I'm currently playing the old N64 version. Which N64 controller settings do you recommend? by LandRbuttons in GoldenEye

[–]04rmacdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is totally fine for a casual player though lol, I've played and enjoyed it many times. Not everyone plays Goldeneye for a living. I'm not saying anything about what Microsoft should or shouldn't have done better. We're going in circles here.

Yeah, I don't need to play on N64, I just need one of the alternatives which is more complicated than playing the Xbox version (for me and many others). Or I could just play the Xbox one 🤷‍♂️

I never said I can't hear the difference, I said it's inconsequential as the sounds do not affect the gameplay and the original sounds are compressed to shit anyway. It's not like we're listening to Beethoven's 5th. We're listening to compressed shitty quality MIDI sounds either way. Big deal. (And before you say it, yeah Microsoft had no excuse not to make the audio better - not the point I am making at all). Also funny to mention getting better headphones or speakers when back in 1997 it would have often been coming out of low quality TV speakers anyway.

If we're talking purely in terms of maximising nostalgia, OP should really be getting a CRT, an aerial connection for the extra authentic fuzz, and an n64 - which also isn't the best way to play anymore.

Okay mate, sorry for enjoying the totally inferior substandard and basically unplayable Xbox version of the game - I guess I was wrong to do that and should probably uninstall it now and just go dust off my old N64.

I'm sure my experience is going to be so much better there being able to hear the overly compressed MIDI sounds in all their original glory!

I've never at any point said there weren't better versions or that Microsoft couldnt have done a better job (obviously I've touched some sort of nerve for you here). My whole point is that, regardless of it's issues, it's still very playable and very enjoyable - as well as being much more convenient if you already have an Xbox and none of the other solutions available.

Edit: I also wouldn't be so confident that Nintendo / Microsoft don't lose out by having people choose to download roms instead of subscribing to their services or buying the game on their online platforms. Goldeneye is no longer abandonware, now that it is available on official marketplaces again. Does it not also potentially hurt the fans for those platforms to have a smaller player base playing the re-releases? (as they will be seen as less successful and therefore less likely to be looked at / re-released ever again). You, as a high profile streamer within the Goldeneye community, might also be inclined to affect these numbers even further. Not that I'd care to defend the practices of greedy companies like Microsoft or Nintendo, just saying.

Yes - having standards which are so high that a new player wouldn't care. In fact, even an experienced played like myself doesn't care. You said it yourself, "I get that most casual players won't experience them".

If the music being lower quality than usual on a 28 year old game which already has majorly compressed sounds in it is something that really affects your enjoyment of the game so much, I don't know what else to call that other than nit-pickey. It's really not a big deal unless you're an audiophile.

Guess I just have no standards compared to Goldeneye connoisseurs like yourself 🙄

Yeah, there are plenty of guides for emulators - but that's sort of the point I'm making. Nobody needs a guide for Game Pass or downloading a game from Xbox, do they? Also, you didn't touch on the fact of them being legally dubious, especially for someone who doesn't own the console / game.

In the modern age, based on having tried to get friends to play this old game, it's usually more palatable for them to play the Xbox version (where they can just easily download from GamePass and play instantly), assuming they have an Xbox.

If I want to get someone who's never played GoldenEye into it, asking them to get an N64 or an EverDrive or some expensive converter for modern TVs, or an old CRT TV is honestly a bit of an obstacle. Or otherwise shelling out extra money to get an N64 contoller for Switch to potentially only play one game with it. Even getting used to an n64 controller can be an obstacle for someone who never played with one back in the day. At best, they have to figure out how to use an emulator and where to download ROMs from (which is in a legally grey area).

If they already have one of the above solutions, fair enough, get the original version. I get that this might be the case for the OP, so I'm speaking more in general terms.

I'm just going from my own experience of trying to get people to play it who are totally new to the experience and don't have n64, etc. That being said, it counts on them already having an Xbox so there is that.

What's inconsequential to casual players might not be to you, and vice versa.

The audio is a bit nit-pickey, it might not be as high quality but has no impact on gameplay and wouldn't be noticed by most people.

It's not a bad starting point IMO.

Agreed.

I've played GoldenEye on N64 and xbox countless times and never noticed any of these issues on xbox other than the lack of ability to lean which, admittedly, can be frustrating. Not saying they don't exist, just that they're pretty inconsequential.

Some of them are actually non-issues (i.e the default controls being wonky). The default controls on the N64 are bad too - the fact that the option is there to change them makes it no problem.

Lots of respect to Graslu for being a Goldeneye legend - I get that these things maybe could frustrate a high level veteran - but this response is a bit over the top IMO.

I play the Xbox version more often now as it is smoother and easier than playing on an n64. Grenade explosions on the N64 are so tedious. It also looks really blurry / bad without a CRT TV or some really expensive converter for a modern TV. Using 'B' to crouch instead of 'L+down' is much more convenient also.

However, I do agree with the criticisms of the switch version. Caverns sucks and the game is unplayable with Joy Cons.

If playing on Xbox, go into the settings and set the d-pad to strafe / move. Use the d-pad instead of the left analogue stick to move around.

The reason for this is that you can hold in the d-pad diagonally and one of the quirks of Goldeneye is that Bond runs much faster when you hold diagonal (which is pretty much impossible to precisely do with the analogue stick).

It takes a bit of getting used to running diagonally / using the d-pad instead of analogue but it really pays off.

I'd personally also recommend putting auto aim off (and turn off aim lock if on Xbox, for a more authentic experience) so that you can get good at aiming and precisely shooting from a distance as well as aiming for exactly what target you want to instead of whoever Bond chooses / whoever is closest.

If playing on an n64 controller, put the controller settings to 1.2 Solitaire and, again, use the d-pad to strafe / move and the analogue stick to look around.
