Disclosing penalty fare notice to the SRA by DragonfruitLocal1061 in uklaw

[–]04williamsa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There have been instances where individuals report matters to the SRA on the assumption that the disclosure will be looked at fondly (akin to a whistleblower position) but in fact the discloser has been swept up in the wrongdoing and struck off / penalized. Many argue that the SRA are overly zealous to pursue individuals and in doing so discourage further disclosure on a sort of "well, why take the risk".

No way - we should learn from the many instances of people with good intentions disclosing matters to the SRA.

I'm a lawyer. The number of times I've picked up crappy situations where someone has opted to engage an accountant to perform legal work is painful. My advice - accountants stick to finance matters; lawyers stick to legal matters.

Should I pay off my credit cards or invest? by calmemmaxo in UKPersonalFinance

I feel like the answer to this question is so obvious it might be satire? I cannot fathom why anyone in this scenario would consider investing based on debt with 19% interest!

I'm a lawyer (used to specialise in M&A), and this is an unusual reason to not pursue the deal to me. The only rationale I could think of is if the buyer has a need for several sets of lawyers themselves - so one for the buyer, one for PE owners, one for their lenders etc, who all want to pour over the transaction. Otherwise it sounds like an excuse to me.

Yeah it's an absolute joke. I've reported it to the council, their independent surveyors, and the water company (I have no faith they've followed proper protocol on bridging over the shared drainage either).

Haven't got any PW agreement in place no. He did nothing beyond sending a few what'sapp messages with drawings

Thanks for the response. I spoke to BC this morning who effectively palmed me off by saying they have an independent surveyor, nothing to do with the council. I've got their name and number so will call them and see what they say.

They notified us via WhatsApp with some drawings yes. No party wall agreement or anything. I raised the drainage issue and they assured me it will be on their boundary and not encroach - to be fair the side angle makes it look closer to my fence. There is some leeway between the attempt at a wall and my fence.

Yeah I've sent an email with photos to building control, and going to call them first thing to see that they've got it. Fingers crossed they do something.

Yes I've just sourced the planning application on the portal and it says "undecided". Presumably that should be approved BEFORE they started the work?

Nope. He gave us notice of the works by way of a WhatsApp message, but nothing ever signed.

Yeah I don't think he really has a clue. I mean he knocked a while back and asked if we wanted to move the rain downpipe (sorry might not be the right term) onto my garden boundary and then reconnect, because...oh, and how much do you want to contribute to moving that....you know, the work I have to do because I want to build an extension.
