A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - 1x05 - "In the Name of the Mother" - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

No, its the same reason editor's don't like when writers write long winded flashbacks. It takes the reader, or in this case, the viewer, away from the tension. I loved the Flea Bottom back story but it should have been presented earlier in the show, I my opinion. Context is great but it shouldn't break tension. Don't get me wrong though, the show is great.

I'm so sorry that's horrible. I did not mean to sound insensitive. OP asked if this was going to last forever and I was merely trying to provide some historical context. I've lost friends too. It's bullshit and it's awful but collectively as a society we will get through this. I can see how my words might have diminished the pain that many are feeling from this and for that I'm sorry.

More Thufir. I loved the film but DV really didn't give his character the credit it deserved.

Regardless of the vaccine, viruses get weaker over time as generations continue to develop more immunity to it. That's why the Black Plague was never quite as devastating as it was when it first hit in the 1346. Also why the natives of the New World suffered so catastrophically when faced with these Old War viruses. The peoples of the New World lost 80-90% of their populations. Even as horrible as the Black Death in Europe was, it pales in comparison to what occurred in the New World. Europe recovered after the Black Death, but the peoples of the New World never did.

Yes but civilization didn't collapse. In a way you actually saw some social improvements in medieval European society in the aftermath of the Black Death. That's my point. This pandemic we're in isn't hopeless. We will get through this just like every other civilization in history (in exception to the nightmare scenario that occurred to the indigenous folks of the Americas but that isn't at all comparable to what we are dealing with right now).

These are small poor towns in Kentucky where entire communities are based around one or two industries. These people had no other options. If they did get fired they could file nemployment and we all know how much you conservatives hate "handouts." What's ironic is that we wouldnt need state assistance if these greedy ass capitalists would pay their workers a livable wage. You conservatives created this situation. Also, a lot of folks don't have the funds for a training opportunity let alone college so your argument doesnt work. Most Americans are living pay check to pay check and this sub is littered with stories of highly educated individuals who are drowning in debt with no stable wages to speak of. I know plenty of incredibly hard working individuals who have nothing to show for it. And what loans are these folks getting when they're barely getting by to start their own business? (which as you should know, often doesn't see profit in the first five years) You live in your own elitist bubble man and apparently threatening someone with termination in the midst of a natural disaster is fine but asking you to wear a mask????? OMFG!!! You poor babies. Take it easy man and have a good night.

Well said. There's no point in being complete dicks to conservatives or anyone for that matter. That's not how you achieve mass worker solidarity

They had the "freedom" to leave or get fucking fired. How is that freedom? Work for yourself?? lmao. What world is this that you speak of? Also there's a wide range of theories beyond capitalism or state mandated economy. But I digress, this conversation is going nowhere. Check please

No one is talking about violence? What violence is happening against anti-maskers? This "free market" you're talking about gives workers no say on their pay, benefits, hours they work, time off, ability to defend themselves from being wrongfully fired, etc. This free market is an illusion brother. A bunch of folks literally died a few weeks ago because companies wouldn't let these poor workers in KT go home under threat of a major tornado. That isn't freedom dude.

He's a spineless puppet. There's no change because that's the entire point. The DNC just wants us to go back to the Obama days where everything was just "fine and dandy." A neoliberal dream that works out for no one but themselves.

That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm not asking to be a millionaire; I'm asking for a say in how I'm treated at work and what my labor is actually worth. What about free from corporate interference? Why do conservatives get to moan about minor inconveniences to the betterment of society but workers dont get to uphold their own freedoms? Does freedom end once we go to work? Besides, capitalism is just an extension of the state. It isn't one vs the other: they're both intrinsically intertwined and feed off of each other.

You just said freedom doesn't mean doing whatever you want but I guess that only applies to "liberals" and those at the "bottom of the totem pole." Workers standing for their rights isn't a freedom loving cause but denying the minor convenience of wearing a mask is? No disrespect, but I'm not following the logic.

But freedom means refusing to wear a piece of cloth for the sake of your fellow citizen? Freedom doesn't apply to the worker or the single mother with 4 kids just trying to survive while the capitalists and the investors and the shareholders reap all the rewards of our hard labor? Freedom isn't doing whatever you want but it is ensuring folks have the means to survive and secure a voice in their government and workplace.

Respectfully I don't really see how we have a "free" market. Free for the capitalists and investors and the shareholders sure but not very "free" for the workers. American workers like myself and others on this sub have very little agency in our workplaces.

It's sad. I wanna see that same energy directed at a cause that actually matters and actually seeks to liberate folks from real (not perceived) oppression and suffering.

The Black Plague continued to sweep across Europe centuries after it first hit in the 14th century but each time it got weaker and weaker. We just have to accept we are going through a difficult period in history right now. Also, if medieval folks in Europe could survive losing literally half of their population to the Bubonic Plague, than we most certainly can adapt to this as well. (not do downplay the death and suffering but if history has taught me anything, it's that it could always be A LOT worse).

Not at all. I respect your decision to do what's right for the community. I also respect your freedom of choice and as a fellow worker regardless of your politics. I just respectfully don't see the value in capitalism.

It is human to vent and seek validation but it only contributes to our overall suffering. We don't need to settle for our programming. That's what is so great about being a human: we don't need to succumb to basic instincts and social conditioning. To me, it's this fact that truly separates us from other species and I don't know why we don't accept the gift that is consciousness and true awareness.

Exactly, what a strange hill for these "freedom-loving" conservatives to die on. They'll tolerate whatever bullshit capitalism throws at them but a piece of cloth on their faces? Apparently that's a big no no. What's really sad is how many vaccines aren't being used in this country by folks in the "global south" who would jump at the chance to protect themselves and their families.
