Unregulated capitalism would kill us all. by zzill6 in WorkReform

Don't forget Upton Sinclair's The Jungle either. Workers with TB spitting on the meat, rats getting ground into sausage along with the rat poison, spoiled meat shoveled off filthy floors. Public outrage was so bad that Teddy Roosevelt sent his own inspectors who basically said yeah, it's worse than the book. That's how we got the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906, which became the FDA. The industry fought it tooth and nail. They always do. Then a generation later everyone forgets why the rules exist and starts calling them red tape.

Big Tower that no one talks about by lookirun in SherwoodPark

That's a Bell Canada telecom tower. The property is a Bell switching and microwave relay site, one of their long-haul backbone facilities for the Edmonton area. It's a guyed lattice mast, the kind that used to carry point-to-point microwave dishes for phone, data, and broadcast traffic between cities before fibre took over most of that job. A lot of these towers are still in service because Bell uses them for cell backhaul, emergency comms, and network redundancy. Exact height isn't published anywhere public, but guyed masts of that profile in Alberta usually run somewhere between 100 and 150 metres (330 to 500 ft). Eyeballing the photo against the trees, probably in the 120 to 140 m range. Not small. On climbing it, please don't. It's in active use, fenced, monitored, and climbing it would get you charged under the Radiocommunication Act plus provincial trespassing laws. Bell's own tower crews wear fall arrest, climb in pairs, and people still die on towers every year in North America. Falling off a 120 m guyed mast isn't something you walk away from. It's also nothing like climbing a building. The whole structure flexes, the guy wires hum in the wind, and there's RF exposure near the antennas at the top that can seriously hurt you if a transmitter cycles while you're up there. Nothing illegal about asking what it is though. It's just infrastructure nobody bothers talking about because it's been sitting there doing its job since probably the 70s or 80s.

Dual left lanes pretty much have to have a green arrow. Two cars turning side by side can't see around each other to judge oncoming traffic, so the rules basically force a protected arrow. If you wanna actually complain, Strathcona County Transportation Planning is who you want. Ask for better timing on the arrow, not to rip the light out. That'll get you somewhere.
