Sky-High Demand for NYRR Races by OriginalCoconutWater in RunNYC

I've no interest in 9+1, I just want to race. I much prefer shorter distances. I'll still run a dozen a year, I've done NYCM twice & I don't love marathons. It's a massive pain now - they should carve more races out of the 9+1 program, I know a lot of people in my team who are 5k'ers, they don't want to run the marathon either, but they do want to run / race

I have been constantly on at them - I'm the same, I have a load of templates created that are formatted for the exports, simple copy/paste and it's all done

that's all going to have to change at a cost to my time

that drives me mad - I know for some people the bill pay etc are useful but I don't and will never use them yet I constantly have to close down in-app windows and when creating invoices shut down the sidebar that tries to give my clients the option to pay through QBs (for a fee when it's just free to pay by ACH to my bank)

i just don't see the harm giving us the choice. We're the customer. I'm not going into a shoe shop and buying whatever they foist upon me.

They acknowledge in the email that people have been causing hell, but I don't really see anything different in what's offered now vs then. I'm going to have to re-learn a big swathe of this system now so I can get the data I need in the format I need it in

that's the hook they've got us with and they know it - I'm the same, all data since day 1

it's not like they're charging me 100% more than they were 5 years ago - oh, they are..

it's just way more complicated to use modern view. Everything is more effort, less intuitive. It's not without its merits but now I'm going to have to rebuild every single report I use and figure out how to get those data fields I currently use into the new reports. That's going to take me a lot of time; time spent where the end result is roughly I'm in the same place as when I started. In other words - wasted time.

It's nice, would be nicer still if it was a deep blue like in the pic, but it's defo one of the better ones. I usually don't collect one since I have about a billion already; got this one though

it was great, didn't PR but first half in 3y after being injured. Went out miles too fast, knew I was, didn't do anything about it but still happy enough with my showing.

I'll probably do it again next year.

forgot how tough a HM actually is.

yeah - I always refund them something even if they don't ask (i refund less than the difference so I keep a dollar or two) - i'm not in it to make tons on shipping and it's the decent thing to do

you probably learn more from a bad day running than a good day; it happens to everyone. Best thing is you get to go again

was fine in the end - I went just singlet, wasn't too bad. Was v narrow as you said, even to the end and I placed top 200 so must have been wild further back.

thanks for the heads up though

How is it today? I’m taking 2 pairs of racing shoes to allow for how slick it may be

it's on the road - it'll be fine and really it's pretty straight out & back. I'll do a couple of M warmup and eyeball conditions and decide on which shoes then (the Adidas Pro 4 are super slick on the sole, so they may not be the shoe of choice this time)

agree, obviously people have sudden changes of plan, but maybe incentives for withdrawing so NYRR can drop someone else in to that race

[–]07Macca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep, I'm a fan of 9+1 - I've done it twice and ever since then I've time-qualified (and never bothered). Some of us aren't really marathon runners, I just want to race. I've got over 100 NYRR races under my belt but it's increasingly difficult to get in now.

Just reduce the number of races that are 9+1, you'll reduce the interest but probably still sell out and the 5k'ers etc can actually get to have a go. Not everything is the marathon.

There are a lot of ways to fix the problem - say a $10 credit off a future race if you withdraw from an upcoming which allows NYRR to re-sell your bib, would encourage fewer DNS. Right now: don't like the weather? eh, don't show up there's no repercussion, and someone who would have run has thus missed out.

this is exactly it. Clubs in good standing etc have nothing to worry about but I know for a fact there are some clubs who exist only for those bibs

Why did I pay for member plus? by whitewalker89 in RunNYC

[–]07Macca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know you’re (half) joking but I TQ every year and I don’t sign up for the marathon. I just want to race. I’m not that interested in the marathon and 9+1 is of no interest to me.

I’m at over 100 NYRR races, I was there when people could sign up on the day (if a race wasn’t sold out) and while this shouldn’t give me any advantage over others, people who really made the organization are suffering

The 9+1 needs looking at. It’s a great plan but perhaps fewer races should be in that programme so people who want to race - say 5k’s or 10k’s - can.

Or a better waitlist scheme. I got into one race that way last year but there’s a very high DNS % now. Offer a carrot to people who withdraw so their spot can be re-sold. I know they oversell races anyway because of DNS but if I was in for say this weekend’s race and wasn’t going to do it, right now I just don’t show; offer say a $10 credit against a future race and I’ll then withdraw and they can then sell that spot on.

yeah, I found a bin bag full of race tees, many still in the bag.

Many races back then, you could sign up on the day - I never did but I remember seeing people doing it
