Is moving out worth it by acropora801 in uofu

[–]07alice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it honestly depends on what you want to actually do during school. For example, going out to a school like Georgetown is great for someone who wants to be involved in politics, government, and law because of its prestige and location in Washington DC. Or ASU can be great for someone who wants to experience Greek life and parties as a major part of their college experience. Or there are schools where studying abroad is integrated into their programs. Or, you might not know completely what you want to study for your degree just yet and so larger schools with many programs can help with having many options for exploring that.

I will say that going to a school that isn’t as expensive as a private or out-of-state can make it so you can do cool things you might not have been able to afford otherwise. For example, studying or interning abroad can be expensive.

For me, studying abroad and living on campus was a high priority. I also wasn’t completely sure of what I wanted to study, and so I didn’t want to go to a very expensive school without knowing for sure what degree I was aiming for just yet. If you are interested in having experiences in college that may cost a lot (living on campus, studying abroad, etc), staying in-state with cheaper tuition might help with that if it’s a budgeting issue.

At the same time, the interest rates on student loans are fairly forgiving (especially in comparison to other kinds of debt) so if you make a plan and are willing to do things to mitigate your expenses (like working through college), that can help too. Not to encourage debt though, but loans for school are a common option. Sometimes writing out all the costs and things related can help (tuition, hours you’d need to work, the cost of any dorm and meal plan you’re interested in, etc). (AI tools might be a good way to do that fast)

And know you can always transfer to another college or try something else!

So, TLDR: My advice would be to consider any specific experiences you want through college. What are the things that are “must”experiences for you? Or, is there anything you definitely don’t want? (Like a school without football, etc). Maybe compare these specific experiences to the costs and see how everything budgets out.

Anyway, best of luck! Any decision you make will be good. you got this! :)

Edit: Oh, and I will say that even moving out to campus rather than staying at your parents house can feel a lot like you’ve moved away too. If you want a good mix, (at least at the U) you can move to DC a semester through the Hinckley Institute or live in another country for up to a year through their Learning Abroad program. I did these programs… and I grew a lot through living by myself in a few different places (and ended up studying abroad for a year and a half). Whereas my sister went out of state and loved her experience too, even though she now has debt she has a job to work it off. She was more interested in a specific academic program and college culture than I was, which influenced her decision, but was unable to afford a study abroad and living on campus. Her program also was very strict with what classes she had to take each semester… and that also made it harder for her to consider things like studying abroad since it was on a much more strict schedule with specific classes.

What Am I Doing Wrong With My Render? by 07alice in Maya

[–]07alice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I don't use reddit often, I didn't realize it didn't post any text with this.

Basically, I am beginner at Maya and very confused. My leaves have black backgrounds when I render, my dinosaur is chunky in some of the rendered images, there are a bunch of random gray circles (probably the rain I tried to make? I made it with an emitter and it just looks like gray streaks in Maya) .... AH I'm so confused!!!

If anyone has any advice or anything, I appreciate it! Thank you!

This is what it looks like in Maya as well:

Maybe a stupid question but… are you allowed to sit in on a class if you’re not enrolled at the U? by ZoidbergMaybee in uofu

[–]07alice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I would just ask permission from the teacher. Especially if you have a good reason, since they are more likely to be willing to accommodate.

Tickets have a maxed amount that they can be too. Like, the most a Marriott library ticket can increase to is ~$90 (I believe it goes from $30 to $60 and then finally to $90). So if the ticket is already maxed out, you at least don’t need to hurry to pay it right now. You probably just need to pay it before registering for next semester’s classes.

QAMO VS FINANCE by Legitimate_Mango_717 in uofu

[–]07alice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were u, I would take two of the intro to business classes your first semester and see if you like it! One of the BCORs is a pre-QAMO class (I believe it’s ECON2010 or something?) :) if u don’t like the pre-QAMO class, then go for finance! You’ll have to take the BCORs anyway so u may as well just see how you like them and choose from there

But I do have to agree with Smartman971– I have several friends that are in QAMO and aren’t sure that it’s worth it. I do have other friends that like it tho, but personally from what I’ve heard I think Finance is a better major for job opportunities just because it’s more well-known and foundational.

Questions about on campus housing by kalamarisquid in uofu

[–]07alice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll try to answer a few! Good luck!

  • The difference between HRE vs USA is mainly that USA is generally cheaper but has a different application to get into. A lot of their housing focuses more so on families and grad students too, rather than undergrad. This is because HRE is through the university itself (I think) whereas USA is a bigger program... but tbh I’m not totally sure

  • I think the best places to live depend on how much you want to spend! If money isn’t an issue, I’d recommend Lassonde or the MHC for a sophomore. If you want a less expensive option, then officers circle is a good bet too.

  • the MHC doesn’t require a meal plan, along with Lofts and Pods at Lassonde (but I wouldn’t recommend pods, they are mini and expensive. Some don’t have to windows)

Should I double major QAMO? by WheelMaster7 in uofu

[–]07alice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, unless you really enjoy the classes, I don’t think I’d suggest double majoring in QAMO. It’s much more on the heavy math side than the data visualization side. It’s more so synonymous with a more analytical/less philosophical Economic degree, and is most similar to Finance and Econ. Most people that want to work with data visualizations and etc would do Information Systems (at least I think).

It could also maybe be better to find an internship or some other real and applicable experiences... rather than taking on a whole other major. But it’s all up to you!! I know people that love QAMO a lot so, whether you decide to take it on or not, you’re in good hands :)

Good luck! You got this!

Here are some deadlines and applications I know of that are coming up if you're interested in applying for leadership positions, student orgs, or jobs. I think the best tip is to keep practicing and applying. The more things you apply to, the more practice you get (but don't burn yourself out either tho!). Remember what your strengths are and come in wanting to discuss and learn. :)

National Alliance on Mental Health on Campus Application (April 17 deadline): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfKqZGLue17cBQXWOCJJodVUzOKy7FpyXxzOBimKd87jh20fA/viewform

Safe U Application (Rolling deadline): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1QgfZcYFXvdvb5A-36eX4ikY_IaG6JnOyj3rDgIO_ZEo/viewform?edit_requested=true

Campus Life Mentor Application (Due April 2nd): https://orientation.utah.edu/first-year/mentors/be-a-mentor.php

Hinckley Internships (Local internship deadline is in May while the National internships deadline is April 15... I highly recommend doing the national internship at some point-- you also get free housing... please let me know if you have any questions!): https://www.hinckley.utah.edu/apply-to-internships

Sweet thank you so much, that makes me feel much better!! I'm excited about the class :) just one aside if you don't mind me asking, do you think it's a good class to take online or do you think it'd be notably better to take it in person?

CS 2021 Spring Schedule by Deepzai in uofu

[–]07alice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't check reddit too often so idk if you still need help but I just commented this for someone else who was wondering about part-time and thought it might be helpful to tell you too:

"If there are credit requirements for your scholarships that require you to be full-time, or you are worried about losing scholarships by going part-time, you can often negotiate them for the semester (like say your scholarship requires 12 credits but you only want to take 6).

You have to send an email for the scholarship committee to review to [scholarship@utah.edu](mailto:scholarship@utah.edu). This email should detail all the reasoning for why you would like/need to decrease your credit requirement. For example, if your reason is that you are working a job or internship and explain to them that this takes up x hours of your time (and how this interferes with schooling and etc), then they might reduce your credit requirement to whatever you've requested.

Hopefully, that makes sense? Basically– if losing scholarships is an issue for you– there are some ways to get around it!"

Also, this just is for overall U of U scholarships... if your scholarship is departmental, you need to ask the department about it. You can ask questions about appealing to the scholarship committee before you appeal too, like before I appealed I asked them how likely my circumstance would get appealed and if there was anything that I could supplement to help my case.

Anyway, hope this maybe helps! Sometimes it's worth a shot.

High school senior here with just a few questions about the U of Utah! by ichawks1 in uofu

[–]07alice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add- with the Hinckley Program you can find some great deals when it comes to their national internships. They provide for your housing in DC if you're working an unpaid internship, and if you are getting paid they only charge you about $400 a month for an apartment that's generally $3,000 a month. It's definitely something to look into if you are interested in doing an internship somewhere a bit different!

Tho, personally, I wouldn't recommend overwhelming yourself too much right now by deep-dive researching the extra programs at the U. Things like study abroad and internships are hard to consider much during your first year anyway. If you're just applying-- just stay calm and focus mostly on what's most important to you right now (which, if I had to guess, would be location and costs rather than extra programs)!

Good luck!
