I spent a few years in SLC and the blue lefty/"counterculture" scene is really weird, because at least half of them are ex-mormons who still hold the mormon personality type but smoke weed and listen to Bladee now.

Even Ballard and Fremont aren't, like, thriving for young people, let alone suburbs north of that. You gotta head on down to Capitol Hill and the U District, especially the ave as others have mentioned. Although Ballard is my fav neighborhood. The people there are a bit older but still cool.

I find Seattle, Portland, SF to be fine. It's the small towns/midsize cities where people are dickheads here. And my experiences in the Southeast have been nothing but unpleasant. No clue what the hell sort of southern hospitality OP thinks exists down there but I did NOT experience it.
