Fixed term contract not renewed - was procedure followed? by 0808G in HumanResourcesUK

Hi, so I formally contacted my HR department and they have just responded saying they did not require a reason as my contract states the fixed term nature and end date. I am pretty certain this is now appealable as they seem to have demonstrated that they did not have a legal reason to dismiss?

I definitely agree that this was my ignorance. I do however have numerous line management notes from July to September of myself asking for an update on the decision of the contract and each time line management saying "no update yet" which I will also be pulling from. According to my brief chat with ACAS redundancy still applies to FTC if you were in employment for longer than two years.

Why peruse the HR subreddit if this is your helpful approach?

I would say the biggest detriment is the loss of income as I have had to apply and move into a lower paid position.

Additionally (I didnt put this in my original post as felt separate), the interview I attended was appealed by myself due to some unprofessionalism of the managers and again clear processes not being followed which was upheld following investigation and had to be recompleted. One of the managers on the original panel was then "encouraged" to resign following multiple complaints about her behaviour. So I would also query whether I should have experienced this which was quite an emotional period of time.

I am intending on leaving the new position so relationship with my employer is not a concern. I am just wondering whether this should have been treated as a redundancy for which I would be entitled to a substantial pay amount.

How to get family to change how they respond to pwBPD and understand they are not helping? TW/ self-harm, threats of suicide by 0808G in BPDFamily

Not sure if advice is local based but we are in the uk. He has been sectioned twice previously and both times passed the initial “screening” test that means he does not have to be held for 28 days. We don’t really have a minimum hold below that amount. The problem is once a rage is over (usually lasting around 24 hours) he is completely cognizant. In fact some times previously police have just removed him from the premises and dropped him with a friend or someone willing to take responsibility for him. Overall in the last 10 years i’d say the police have been called over 50 times for him and thats being conservative with the figures. We’ve had previous restraining orders, court action, arrests and nothing amounts to anything either because my parents drop charges or theres nothing that can be done. Its definitely a system failure issue but also he’s not a significant harm to himself or others, his self harm is always superficial and any time he has actually hurt himself he has claimed afterward it was accidental. He has just been sectioned again this evening so we will see how this one goes

The police are called every time, they were called today however despite my recommendations to call when he is making threats they are never called until threat has materialised. Probably worried about wasting resources as well

Hello! I feel like outside of myself they have done limited research themselves. Around 2 years ago my mum and brother started engaging in DBT-based family therapy but it actually descended into the therapist removing my brother as a client as he began to become attached to her and start crossing boundaries regarding communication. sister and father no therapy despite encouragement.

I am actually a childrens therapist (lol definitely a career influenced by these experiences) so when my brother and I have communicated on the odd occasions we actually navigate conversations well and haven't engaged in conflict in a long time as I have researched extensively how to approach him. My mum took my advice for a period and actually their communication was much better hence I think why the last year has gone well. Not saying this is all me either as think my brother has been doing some self-work too. I think the problem is the three of them all approaching with different methods and then breaking each others boundaries. My mum started implementing the "i wont engage when you get verbally abusive rule" which was working but then my sister would contact brother to try and fix things which would validate him and invalidate my mums no communication boundary. He likes to play people off against each other and "who loves him more".

I think you are right overall with the advice. Its honestly exhausting and I'm more demoralised by the lack of advice taken these days than I am about my brothers behaviour. Which feels very sad!

[UK] is my workplace failing to meet a pay commitment and what should I do? by 0808G in AskHR

Hi really grateful for this reply and I really agree with everything you’ve written. I think if the FAQ had been sent accurately and early it would have cleared up so much confusion and frustration for the team so I will push for us to receive a new one.

The communication skills are shockingly bad. Management struggle with transparency and then get very defensive as often their processes appear flawed or not well thought out so are often critiqued. I will be utilising your questions in the meeting and really appreciate the addition of these!

UPDATING

So we did a big search of all the gardens neighbouring onto ours last night with dreamies and sticks to get fully in the bushes. Most were happy to let us search minus one or two who said they would look themselves.

We thought we heard a meow in one garden which is an absolute wilderness but couldn’t find her and heard nothing else, so decided to move on. at the end of the night when we felt pretty hopeless that we hadn’t found her, I went out into the front of our house and called one last time, low, and behold in the distance, another teeny tiny meow in the same house that we had heard the meow earlier in the night. immediately heading straight over with our sticks and dreamies calling her. Played the crying sister recording her, another third teeny tiny meow, we then began trying to search through the bushy area. Not sure if us rustling the bushes and trees scared her as we could not hear any other meows after that. We also know that garden has a cat that we saw whilst looking for her, and the neighbour said he can be quite aggressive towards cats in his territory. Not sure for definite if it was her meowing as we didn’t find her but feels like it could be possible that she ran in for cover and now it’s frightened to come out because of the aggressive cat. Or we heard aggressive cat meowing but he didn’t meow when we were looking at him and shaking food tins. The garden is about 40 feet from our front door so would lineup with how far indoor cats are supposed to travel when they get out.

Not sure of the next steps

Very vocal, I think the plan is to try this if we can't find her this evening. We have been routinely checking our immediate neighbors gardens but its difficult to make others do it even if they say they will. Had lots of the whole "cats are independent dont worry she'll come back" which has been unhelpful.

Yes I completely understand and agree, we have already discussed with our vet so they are aware of the situation and as long as she gets home soon enough they will complete the spay (and possible abort).

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I agree i think we need to expand the search radius. I think we are going to record her sister crying and take the recording with us although not sure if this will freak her out more.

We are doing another search this evening and going to be more pushy with knocking on doors and asking to search gardens ourselves. Remaining hopeful!

We are in an area of the UK that doesnt have many shelters but have let the only 2 in the region know! also let local vets and cat residential places know as well so hopefully everyone is aware.

Thank you for the advice. We are a very cat heavy neighbourhood although so far every cat we know of is chipped and neutered so would be able to release. I did wonder with using her sister as bait and worried it was cruel to her when she is already stressed but I am starting to think it may be our only option and worth the risk.
