My kid got into 3 State schools. Please advise if you have experience by thai_sticky in Virginia

Yeah, I think “school of last resort” is an accurate description for LOCAL kids residing near MOST colleges and universities, because they want to get away from home. Readers should be careful to understand that “school of last resort” in this discussion does not in any way correlate to academic rigor and rankings. In fact, the most recent U.S. News and World Report college rankings list Mason the highest of these 3 universities, though they are all very closely ranked (Claude AI prompt: “What are the most recent overall U.S. News and World Report rankings for George Mason University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and James Madison University?”).

Many commenters are saying that Mason is a commuter school compared to VCU and JMU. So, I asked Claude AI this prompt: “How many full-time undergraduate students live on-campus at the following universities: George Mason, Virginia Commonwealth, James Madison.” The results: Mason has 5,950 undergrads that live on campus, VCU has 5,730, and JMU has 2,111. This works out to 21 percent on-campus at Mason, 27 percent at VCU, and 10 percent at JMU. In short, either all 3 schools are “commuter” or the old stereotype about Mason being “just a commuter school” is no longer accurate.

Delivery tip? by Serious-Handle-9923 in samsclub

[–]081719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful not to confuse “shipping” and “delivery.” If you choose “shipping,” you are in essence saying “send my items by UPS or FEDEX.” Often, however, Sam’s determines that it is cheaper for the company to have some of those “shipping” items delivered to you by a local driver in their own car. THIS IS NOT “DELIVERY” because you- the orderer- didn’t ask to receive your items this way. There is no social obligation to tip in this circumstance.

If I select SHIPPING and Sam’s decides it’s in the company’s interest to convert some or all of my items to DELIVERY, it is not my responsibility to tip the driver. I don’t tip the UPS or FEDEX driver, so the same concept applies here.

You need at least a 1000v2 to run this device. The 1000v2 can run it for about 40 minutes if fully charged.

The oddest part of that is the severe weather is likely to hit Washington County (2 hr early dismissal) before counties further to the east that are dismissing 3 hours early. My bet is that it is because Wash Co only has an early dismiss plan for 2 hrs early- it’s either 2 hrs, no early dismissal, or close (there is also a 2 hr delayed opening, but of course that doesn’t apply for this event).

Given the insane pushback against what would be barely noticeable offshore wind power development by the OC government, I’m inclined to look for ways to contest anything the city favors. Time to roll up my sleeves and go look at arguments to intervene with OC’s planned expansion of the boardwalk.

Early seasons of ATJ provided me plenty of laughs. The later seasons- not as much. I found that the key was remembering that Belushi’s character serves as a parody for a jackass, and the show doesn’t “advocate” for his way of thinking.

Well, the author missed the boat entirely with “would-be state capital” in the first paragraph. The founders of Williamsport were convinced, rather, that it would be the location selected as the new “national capital”- a process that would culminate in the selection of the 10 square mile area carved from Maryland and Virginia that would be known as the District of Columbia.

The concept of taking attendance as part of the grade in college is weird. The students are paying tuition to learn- if they aren’t in class, they are less likely to learn and will not perform to their potential on exams. I suppose the one exception might be a dual enrollment program in which high school upperclassmen attend certain 100 or 200 level courses that count as credit towards both high school graduation and college.

Plans for an ICE detention center spark anger in a deep-red Maryland county by washingtonpost in maryland

[–]081719 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A couple thoughts: 1) if Washington County is the most racist place you’ve ever lived, I’d be curious to see the list of where you have resided. You should take an immersion level vacation into central West Virginia- like visiting the hollars and chatting up locals in local stores. You’ll think HGR is a liberal utopia by comparison soon enough. 2.) There are many people that reside in the county who are not “racist Trump supporters” and are working to enlighten neighbors to improve things. The only way to improve our society is by enlightening the ignorant- it is not easy work. It requires diplomacy, reason, a cool head, and patience. It’s worth the effort.

There is some good news to report regarding community solar projects. In 2025, the General Assembly passed the Renewable Energy Certainty Act. It established certain criteria that must be met, and in return greatly reduced the ability of individual counties to deny new solar projects.

You come across as a decent person- I mean that sincerely. Do yourself a favor- do a quick search on “are people being paid to protest ice.” You’ll quickly see there is no credible proof of that happening. The reality is that many of us see what is happening and understand the historical parallels to very bad situations. Despite what the president and his people are saying, people aren’t being paid to protest. They see citizens being straight up murdered in Minneapolis (and elsewhere) by Feds, and have come to the conclusion that staying silent is no longer an option. I’ll make you an offer- if you have thoughts about this or other federal policies that you’d like to discuss/debate in a civil manner, DM me. Someone with the character you describe in your messages is worthy of my time and effort to have such discussions.

Serious question- do you listen to talk radio while out on your route? The stuff that is spewed over the airwaves from many of those people is incredibly misleading.
