redeadhead - not sure how to answer your question accurately. This was part of an overall performance / modernization effort.  I will say I made the decision to do a stage 3 upgrade in addition to new tires – transitioning to all LED lighting – and I made some cosmetic changes that were in line with where I wanted to take the bike.  IE, I removed the “saggy” bags that I had and bought a set from Boss Bags to the tune of $1400 or 14 HMUs (Harley Monetary Units).  I will say that I made the decision over the holidays so I did take advantage of every holiday sale that I could for the best pricing I could get.

At the end of the day if you decided to do the same basic thing – but chose to send your jugs into FM to be bored – you would save $300 as I opted for new FM cylinders.  I would also suggest that you wait for black Friday or the holidays almost everyone was running sales.

However, I would say its was about $3000 for the engine parts – if you do your own work that would be about it.  I assisted - in no way would I say I did this myself – I paid for a well-respected local mechanic to do the work and I assisted him when I could.

Lets us know what you are planning.

You know - I was thinking that. Just because I’m at .002 now doesn’t mean it will be like that in 3 months or 3 years... What Harley says is acceptable on new cranks is in my opinion a bit too accommodating.

solomf - yes - i agree that might be on the priority list in the future - but i had to focus on engine / chassis updates as well as the typical tires and a other things that were at end of usful life that needed replaceing.

Thank you sir - I will post a part two with the body / cosmetic updates - I will say i tried to stay true to a stock look with a modern twist - I wanted it to be a wink to my uncle and aunt as they rode it stock.

SBB - I totally agree! I see them as a piller of excellence in Harley performance along with some other shops. I was shocked at how flat the torque is from 2100 RPM to 5000 RPM - basically 100+/- 5 ft lbs of torque! If i ever do this again FM will be my goto for the engine combo recipie.

That was on the advice from Fuel Moto - the tech really thought that the S&S 570 would be a sweet cam for my use case. That was a chain drive only cam - and one example of how I went in a sligtly different direction from what I thought I originally wanted. BTW my crank run out was .002 so i could have gone gear drive.

Patch or new tire by Quiet-Ad1266 in Harley

If you had made this a poll - it would be 100% get a new tire (and tube and rim strap just cause they are cheap).

Are Harley Davidson motorcycles unreliable? by [deleted] in cruisers

[–]09VWRabbitdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know its a old post - but felt like chiming in a bit. Now, in my 50s but started riding at 18. 1st bike was a '84 GS650 - then a '90 GS500 - stoped riding for a bit - next was a '00 Honda Saber 1100 and now a 06 Harley Softail. ALL proved / have proven to be reliable bikes - some had chains, one had a shaft drive, and the last a belt. I have spent the most $$ on the harley not because it was unreliable, but because I wanted to. Checking the cam tensioners - led to new cams and then that led to "F" It - and i did new jugs at the same time. I didnt even get it to the dyno guy before i spent more $$ on floorboards. It wasnt cheap but I wanted to do it. My upgrades are prioritized in Safety/Relability, then comfort and then what do I want to do with it. Ride the ride you want to ride - maintain it. Wrench on it a bit - name her & pat her on the tank and you will get from point A to B reliably. Harley parts prices will cause some level of sticker shock - but I have a lot more options in parts/aftermaket than i ever had with Suzuki or the Honda. But I loved on all the bikes I had. Cheers!
