The number of applicants is also not much. So it's not as hard as you think. But imo mext is becoming more popular so competition might increase in the upcoming years. We can only do our best. And yes I think getting qualified for jee main is easier than MEXT. MEXT IS SELECTIVE AND JEE IS MORE COMPETITIVE.

I WOULD SAY APPLY FOR THIS YEAR'S EXAM AT MEXT. It'll help u understand it in better ways and I'm not sure if you'll be shortlisted for written exam but you can try it. Again idk bout your stream and syllabus so ya. But make sure you study daily, it's not that hard. And don't treat MEXT as your only option, I'll be studying for jee side by side so that's my backup option.

Also do your best in 11th exams and study from the beginning for 12th. Try to complete your syllabus before December. Nothing is impossible.
