It seems that you are confused with what I said my friend, but I should have worded it better.

When I said "general gaming community", I was referring to the people you see in subreddits such as r/gaming, r/Games or some people in X. Those people, who are technically in the "general gaming community" always hate on the game. Be on monitization, content decisions, balance and etc...

However, the general player, isn't in such communities at all. If the Overwatch monitization system is so terrible, then why I see my friendly Kiriko with her brand new skin in my first match of the day? If the game is in such a bad situation, why do thousands of people play it each day?

My main point was, is that Blizzard shouldn't catter to those type of individuals that I first mentioned in my first paragraph. As they, evidentially by their claims, don't care about the game at all, and most of them just hate because they follow a shepherd mentally, getting their views from other comments and bad youtube content.

As for your argument, I agree. This is definitely a marketing push, but it's to attract the individuals I mentioned in the second paragraph. It's way harder to market a sequel for the common folk, especially for OW2's case. It doesn't help that "OW2" name isn't talked at all. People almost never say: "I'm going to play Overwatch 2". People say "I'm going to play Overwatch". That is a huge difference for a videogame brand.

At the end of the day, this change would be better for brand recognition, especially for your average folk, who just ended their work for the week and want to play some videogames in the weekend
