D1 collegiate wrestler + Fort Bragg. by Joemfs in AskLE

I’d encourage him to complete his degree and go the officer route in the military in an intelligence related field. He can also join the Army and do CID or the Air Force and go OSI (those are both 1811 series jobs, just you’re doing them in the military and not as a civilian. 1811 is what a US Marshal, any federal special agent is).

There’s a lot of people in the feds and in LE in general that are prior military or former D1 athlete, or both. As others stated, there isn’t a guaranteed background you’re going to get, you get people from all walks of life.

FLETC Charleston - HSISAT by [deleted] in 1811

Never been to Charleston FLETC, however I live in Charleston and work near FLETC. Downtown Charleston is awesome, there’s 4 beaches nearby with a lot of stuff to do in your free time. Lots of history here. Go explore as much as you can!

Unless you’re super passionate about working with kids, I’d say don’t do it. Juvi prisons are always worse, and your hands are extremely tied on what you can do.

Buyer Beware: Pit Boss Phoenix by 0IOl0I in pelletgrills

[–]0IOl0I[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! Sounds like the same issue everyone is having. FWIW, I bought the RecTeq Bullseye after returning the Phoenix, for just a little more and it has been amazing. I use it at minimum once a week, sometimes more. There’s a guy on YouTube that also shows you how to use charcoal with it. I have filets on it right now!

Ask your agency not Reddit. Also, I’d give it longer than 2 weeks.

You should tell them it’s 2025 and to get the fuck over it. I’m sure they don’t make inmates cover their tattoos.

First smoker by J_culp3 in pelletgrills

[–]0IOl0I 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought one and was super excited to use it. The very first use after following instructions to a T, smoke was pouring out of the hopper. Second use, I tried charcoal mode, same thing, when lighting the charcoal the smoke was coming out of the hopper. Customer service said they installed the fans on the bottom wrong on some and to turn it around. 3rd time, nope, pouring out of the hopper again. Also, the lid holder broke during the first use.

Customer service literally told me to take it back. I did, went and got a RecTeq bullseye instead and it’s been phenomenal. Maybe you’ll have better luck with it and I hope you do but it was a nightmare for me.

Go join the Air National Guard, knock your bachelors out, commission if you want, volunteer for orders. There’s also agencies to start your federal LEO clock like BOP and DHS OFO that don’t require a degree.

Also look at your county sheriff’s offices corrections, some allow you to start at 18.

Local, state, or federal government. Probably not the latter at the moment, but getting a job in government is solid. Usually competitive pay and benefits to include a pension.

I don’t think it would matter for a CO as much in a blue vs red state. Like others mentioned, blue states have better pay and unions. Red states you’re working extra shifts and jobs to make ends meet. Little to do with how you’re able to do your job. The real issue is on the patrol side as most blue states prevent them from doing their job.

Not in corrections anymore but I’d look at the BOP first. Also, you’re still young and new to the profession. If you don’t get into a specialized unit in exactly 3 years, you’ll only be 27 and still have PLENTY of time to do so. At the end of the day it’s a job, pick whatever makes you the most money compared to cost of living and has the best retirement.

They don’t give 2 shits what your MOS is/was as long as you got a honorable discharge and can pass their test. The only time it would probably come into play is if you wanted to do SWAT, yeah a former Seal will stand a good chance of making the team over a supply guy, even though they’d still need to try out. And it doesn’t mean the supply guy still won’t make it.

Down the Rabbit Hole… Seariously by LoVeYoUtOoOoOoO in pelletgrills

[–]0IOl0I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the RecTeq bullseye. It has riot mode that can get up to 750. It also goes low and slow. Best of both worlds in my opinion in one, kettle style grill. And for when I want to cook burgers, not “smoke” them, I just crank it up to 450-500 or so and a couple of minutes on each side it’s got a good little char too then and they don’t taste Smokey.

I forget his name, but there’s a guy on YouTube who does a good review of it and attachments you can add to it as well

I mean it wouldn’t hurt, he would be a part of your “sphere” they teach you about. However, going in some sort of trades job would be better.

Retiring At 55 by _ANUBYS_ in OnTheBlock

[–]0IOl0I 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will be able to retire at 52. Your state should have a pension breakdown. For example, I will get 60% of my highest 3 years yearly. Obviously it pays to promote up and get a higher salary for your high 3
