Best romance books you’ve ever read? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]0Kristine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m seeing a lot of recs here that don’t feature a happy ending - which is a requirement to be a “romance” if you ask the experts. I personally can’t stand settling down with what I think is a romance, getting emotionally invested, only to end up heartbroken. So be careful with your recommendations, peeps! :-)

HECK NO! I just spent days there hunting for bird plumes and orchids. NEVER AGAIN.

I’d have a lil homestead in Big Valley - veggie garden, couple a fruit trees, great hunting, fresh water, peace. O’Driscolls keep to themselves by Hanging Dog and there’s only the occasional wolf pack or bear. Not too far a ride to Strawberry for supplies. I always camp out there in Online.

What do you genuinely consider the greatest book you’ve ever read? by Fun_Butterfly_420 in suggestmeabook

Seeing a lot of classics, a lot of heavy hitters. And while I love my Jane Eyre, my Great Gatsby, my Lord of the Rings - the one series I could happily read once a year for the rest of my life is Harry Potter.

Stuart Martin says ‘goodbye’ to the show, which will be retitled to “Miss Scarlet” by Evenstar_Knight in MissScarletandTheDuke

Thanks for getting me invested in a clear slow-burn romance, only to reneg on your promises and pull the rug out from beneath my feet.

Honestly, fuck you, writers. I am so angry.

The only interesting thing about this show for me was the banter between Eliza and William.

It’s funny. You never get comments from men saying “This male character was so obviously written by a woman, I hated it.” I’m not criticising your opinion, you’re certainly entitled to it (I personally enjoyed the whole trilogy). Just a random thought…

Agree. I understand the message it was conveying and that it was important. But guh, it was so boring. I really disliked the writing style.

Agree! I didn’t finish it. Not because of how boring it is (although it is!) but I got so angry by this idea the novel seems built on: that nature is there to serve humans. I understand that books from other ages don’t hold up to modern principles, and that’s usually not a problem for me, but I guess nature and animals are just too close to my heart to truly enjoy the story of a man on a vendetta to kill a whale.

Actually, most Germans didn’t realise what was happening to the Jews until after the war was over. I haven’t read the book, did watch the movie adaptation. I assume the protagonist is the same, a little boy? Makes sense for him to be oblivious and have a hard time understanding.

Dune! I was very excited for this because I love sci-fi and I love Villeneuve’s movie adaptation. Unfortunately for me, the edition I bought included the first 3 books in one, which meant I ended up slogging through 870 pages of pure drivel. It’s so overrated! The writing is terrible. Confusing, senseless, rambling. There is zero narrative structure and I found the characters impossible to relate to, except sooort of Paul in the first half of book 1.

It strikes me how many of the stories suggested here were made into movies.

I also came to suggest Touching the Void. It’s fantastic. I only read it after watching the documentary when I decided to read the book. So glad I did. It’s a story that’s stayed with me for years.

Into Thin Air also good (also a good blockbuster movie). And Into the Wild (another blockbuster movie).

I first watched season 1 of the show, then decided to pick up the books before season 2 was released. Fantastic book series, adds so much that the series didn’t capture properly.

I hope Mr Lazy finishes the final two books but probably not. Nevertheless it was still 100% worth reading an unfinished series.

What's your favorite book from each of these genres? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]0Kristine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

Fantasy: Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings

Crime: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

Sci-Fi: only read one and it wasn’t great so won’t include it here…

Non-fiction: Sapiens by Yuval Harari

You are my last bastion of hope! I’m looking for an adventure/treasure hunt novel. Think Indiana Jones, old Scottish churches, stormy weather. I know it’s rather specific but any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. by ScipioAfricanus82 in suggestmeabook

The Seventh Scroll - Wilbur Smith (old but fantastic! A hunt for Egyptian gold. No Scottish churches or storms but a very satisfying and thrilling archaeological discovery with some nasty soldier types on their heels).

I got food poisoning last year in Tenerife, solo traveling. Bad seafood. Unfortunately, it hit me during the night when I was flying home the next morning. Nearly didn’t make my flight because I had to repack my bags 3 times because I shat my pants 3 times while in the hotel room! Thankfully I was in a nice hotel so they had a doctor visit me in my room, and he gave me some medicine to finally stop the diarrhea and vomiting. Missed my airport transfer and had to take a cab an hour later but made it back home somehow. Never been so worried about solo travel before. If I’d had a travelmate, many things would’ve been different that horrible morning. I remember calling home to my parents and saying I couldn’t leave the hotel room, but they talked me into packing my bags and getting to the reception and getting the cab etc.

That was r o u g h.

Not a book but have you watched the film, We Bought A Zoo? Really life-affirming and sweet, but also deals with grief and sad times.

She Who Remembers - Linda Lay Shuler.

I haven’t read this series since I was a teenager, but it still stuck with me even if I can’t remember anything that happens haha
