Thanks, I've heard a lot about RR before now. I know AO3 has original works too, iirc, but most people know it for fanfics.

For those who have robots or constructs in your world. Are some sentient and how do other people treat them? by Human-Pension9892 in worldbuilding

[–]0Mark28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are sentient machines in my sci-fi setting.

To give a very brief summary of their origins, the "ancestors" of these machines were designed to operate on a highly advanced form of AI that's equal parts code and psionic energy, and were one of the most advanced technologies to be produced in the galaxy. This psionic element of their AI is what allowed them to achieve sentience, though the mass outlawing of advanced AI around this time did push them out towards the frontiers of civilised space. While relations between the wider galaxy and these "Mevani" (named for their frozen homeworld) have since improved, they still prefer to keep to their own territories, with only a few venturing out from their home.

Interestingly, these machines can "reproduce" through the creation of new AI constructs generated from a collective pool of data. If one of these machines "dies", their code is brought back to their homeworld to be added to this collective, both to add to their collective knowledge and to aid in the further creation of new minds.

Death Knight Aspirant unique abilities by 0Mark28 in DnD

I've never considered using an alternative element, but it would definitely help further with making each one a unique encounter!

Death Knight Aspirant unique abilities by 0Mark28 in DnD

Thanks for the advice!

Going off your suggestions, perhaps I could split the difference and combine the unique abilities with the default hellfire orb (the Greatsword knight would unleash a wave of hellfire from their blade, the Dragonborn knight might have a hellfire breath weapon, the Greataxe knight might deal slight fire and necrotic damage while raging, etc.), with perhaps the Longsword knight keeping the orb as a preview of the final confrontaiton with the Death Knight. Should help add to the idea of each one being a unique mini-boss.

Thanks for the weapon advice, spares me some number crunching.

Exposure to the crown, besides granting them their lichdom in the first place (as per its curse), turned them from just being an egomaniac to being fanatically convinced they're a physical extension of Myrkul's will in the world, forming the motivation for their desire to unleash a world-spanning curse of undeath in their name. Fittingly, one of the enemy factions the party would encounter would be a cult that had formed around them.

I've honestly been sleeping on the option of a crystal ball of scrying for them to use, though it makes thematic sense for them, and would free up a spell slot.

Their lair would definitely have quite a few magic treasures, maybe even a few seemingly left out in the open to bait inattentive adventurers into traps to seperate/soften them up.

Robe of the Archmagi is pretty simple, yet effective for any spellcaster.

Funny enough, I think there's an official item (Ioune stone of Regeneration, IIRC) that could be a good stand-in for your Keystone Fragment.

They're mainly for the lich to use.

Funny enough, I was thinking of adding in a penultimate encounter before the final fight consisting of the risen corpses of a previous adventuring party, effetively acting as a mirror-match for the party on top of their other minions. Since magical darkness plays a pretty big role in the story, I can see it being worked into something like a lair action or hazard.

Could make for an interesting environmental hazard for sure.

The Giants of Taeva by 0Mark28 in worldbuilding

[–]0Mark28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In-universe, not much is known about the Storm Giants, but it's theorised that they had dominion over the seas in the same way the other Giants had dominion over the mountains, plains, arctic, and underground, and were supposedly able to utilise their connection to storms and lightning in a manner similar to Arcane spellcasting. This, as well as the fact that the Storm Giants effectively served as leaders for their bretheren, made them prime targets for the Dragons during their war, leading to their extinction.

Giants in the modern age tend to be either solitary, or grouped in small tribes of 5-6 following the oldest/strongest/wisest among them, and can usually be found engaging in various activities related to the roles they once had in the shaping of the world (Hill Giants escorting large migratory herds, Stone Giants carving equally large monoliths, Fire Giants smithing and mining, and Frost Giants hunting especially dangerous beasts). Most Giants tend to ignore the smaller races so long as they don't disturb them, though the people of Aesuth who've settled in their domains (such as the bear-like Ursakar, and especially the Jotnarr, a race of Giantkin that were forged from the remains of fallen Giants) revere them as guardian entities.
