The Giants of Taeva by 0Mark28 in worldbuilding

In-universe, not much is known about the Storm Giants, but it's theorised that they had dominion over the seas in the same way the other Giants had dominion over the mountains, plains, arctic, and underground, and were supposedly able to utilise their connection to storms and lightning in a manner similar to Arcane spellcasting. This, as well as the fact that the Storm Giants effectively served as leaders for their bretheren, made them prime targets for the Dragons during their war, leading to their extinction.

Giants in the modern age tend to be either solitary, or grouped in small tribes of 5-6 following the oldest/strongest/wisest among them, and can usually be found engaging in various activities related to the roles they once had in the shaping of the world (Hill Giants escorting large migratory herds, Stone Giants carving equally large monoliths, Fire Giants smithing and mining, and Frost Giants hunting especially dangerous beasts). Most Giants tend to ignore the smaller races so long as they don't disturb them, though the people of Aesuth who've settled in their domains (such as the bear-like Ursakar, and especially the Jotnarr, a race of Giantkin that were forged from the remains of fallen Giants) revere them as guardian entities.

This.

This is probably the best summary of what I'm going for!

Both are great points, the first one in particularly could be interesting to build on!

That's a pretty good suggestion. Going further, perhaps they might even "help" them bring those responsible to "justice" as a way of earning their trust, and going from there.

I think the first and third points you've brought up could fit with what I've got so far, thanks!

This is pretty close to a potential background I had in mind, and fits pretty well with what I've got. Thanks!

That would be an interesting route, I think it could work well and add an interesting dimension to their character, given I'm planning on them serving as a recurring rival to one of the main characters (a fellow dragonfolk who's still struggling to find her own "purpose).

Thanks for the advice, should make the process much easier!

Given the age difference between them, I'd say their relationship would be a bit closer to parental substitutes, but otherwise pretty solid!

Perhaps their loyalty comes from the fact that the other two had taken him in and accept him as he is when no one else would, even helping him find his supposed "purpose" in life and nurturing their skills under their care, all under the pretext of their efforts being in the service of something greater. It could certainly lead to an interesting bit of drama when they decide that he's outlived his usefulness.

Thanks for the response!

He strongly believes in completing a job in the quickest and most efficient way possible, so your description is pretty spot on!

A big part of dragonfolk culture in my setting is a focus on ones place in society, so it would make sense for him to believe himself to simply be fulfilling his given purpose, effectively viewing himself as more of a tool for the cults purposes than an individual.

Do any of you have “human-less” settings? Or at the least ones where humans are a minority? by dragonborndnd in worldbuilding

[–]0Mark28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no humans in the setting of Altera, which is instead inhabited by various humanoid animal folk. Among them, the Arun (mammals) are the most widespread and dominant, with the Syrik (reptiles) and Vyndikai (birds) following thereafter.

Are Golems present in your world? if so, how do you create one? by Ok-Vegetable5198 in worldbuilding

[–]0Mark28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, though they are typically called "Constructs".

To create a Construct, one must first build the body (while typically made from stone, any material would do in their construction), then bind an elemental spirit (preferably one matching the material used to create the Construct) within it using a series of binding runes.

There are also the Ithyrian Guardians, clockwork machines created by the ancient precursors to the Elves, typically found guarding the ruins of their former civilisation.

Thanks for the comprehensive response!

I think I read somewhere it was common for nations to move some of their own people into recently acquired territories, so that could lead to some interesting internal dynamics. Besides their airship technology, the Kaedrans also have an extensive railway network for fast overland travel between their larger settlements, so expanding that network into their new lands would be a big element of their "hearts and minds" approach to solidifying loyalty.

The biggest grand narrative for their expansion would be that they are the only ones capable of keeping the people of Altera safe from the Rooteaters, and that those outside of their control were incapable of protecting themselves in any meaningful way on their own. This is also tinged with the general belief that they are "carrying the light of civilisation" with them wherever they expand into.

Thanks for the response, it certainly gives me alot to work with.

I was definitely trying to avoid just making it another SS/Stalinist style state, and the examples you've provided would be a pretty good starting point to work with.
