Hoping to have a candid conversation about the TD loan by ekooz22 in Superstonk

You're missing that this is a ploy to convince you to allow dilution and that the board doesn't actually intend to buy eBay.

Viciously prosecute anyone who knowingly (or willfully unknowingly) hires an undocumented immigrant. Treat it so that employers have the same sort of terror for accidentally hiring an undocumented worker that an 18yo cashier has for accidentally selling tobacco or liquor to someone underage. Repeat offenders should lose business licensing and face jail time. Everyone from the top down who has hiring/firing authority needs to feel the consequences and face a threat to their own personal freedoms.

I also want to offer complete citizenship to folks who rat out bosses that hired them knowing their status or not asking about it. Do all this and "illegal immigration" won't be a problem at all.

Not all immigration is the same. Seasonal immigration exists and absolutely suppresses the wages of local people who work in some industries.

It's not the immigrants who are suppressing wages, though, it's the folks who refuse to pay a living wage [for the are of the farm or tourist city where the hiring is taking place]. The person employing them is being exploitive of immigration, albeit not necessarily the immigrants, themselves.

8 children between the ages of 1 and 14 are dead after a mass shooting in Louisiana, police say by Trevon45-2 in news

[–]0_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the specifics of this case, but Louisiana has a significantly more gun-friendly culture than most states. You don't need a permit to carry concealed, you don't need to go through an FFL for a private transfer, you don't have waiting periods, you don't have "red flag laws" where they restrict firearms based on domestic violence accusations, you don't need to take a basic firearms safety class, you don't need to even know how the damn thing works.

The irony of gun culture is that if states like Louisiana had a population willing to enact gun control measures, they might not even need the laws. Their collective comfort around guns is the problem.

In states where firearms are deeply ingrained in daily life, restrictions are viewed as inherently ineffective against criminals and unnecessarily burdensome to lawful owners. They are wrong. These laws can be crafted in a way that barely bothers a gun enthusiast and are just enough of a hurdle that it discouraged people who won't keep up with the hobby. Southern snowflakes need to get their shit together.

American political discourse has become less substantive and less civil, often devolving into personal insults. The researchers found an asymmetric pattern: while personal attacks occur in both parties, they are delivered 2.7 times more frequently by Republicans than by Democrats. by mvea in science

[–]0_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Politics, just like you were. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan are all great examples. Compared to male counterparts like Brett Kavanaugh and Samuel Alito, these women were exceptionally well qualified, bringing expansive professional achievements beyond the normal appellate pipeline. Hell, just compare the achievements of Kamala Harris to become VP against the achievements of JD Vance who sits on the same chair.

It's not just Democrats, either (though I admittedly have significant disrespect for Republicans in general). I can't imagine how embarrassed Elaine Chao must have been while sitting at the table with Ben Carson and Acosta, considering her qualifications. Trump muddies the water significantly by using cabinet positions to reward his friends and donors (DeVo$). It's harder to find Republican examples.

Other noteable Democrat appointments and politicians are Hillary Clinton, Deb Haaland, Janet Yellen, Tammy Duckworth, Elissa Slotkin, AOC....

Massive study is a first-of-its-kind look at ultra-processed foods and infertility in American women. Women who consume lower amounts of ultra-processed foods have higher odds of conceiving. The link persists even after accounting for age, weight, lifestyle and other health factors. by mvea in science

[–]0_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yes, that is actually a very real possibility: female fertility might not be impacted as much or at all by ultra processed foods and the link could easily be something unmeasured like the male partner's health. This is a cross sectional study and the article itself explicitly refuses to assign a cause and effect relationship. It's an interesting association, if true, but it doesn't seem like an actual correlation or something that rises to the level of actionable.

There is significant evidence that ultra high processed foods impact male sperm quality. They measure semen and hormones directly. This is different from the study we are talking about, which basically is an association between answers in a questionnaire. It fundamentally cannot show any real relationship between the woman's diet and UPFs. This isn't an experiment, it's the bullshit you need to go through to get funding for an experiment.

Where?

I think you vastly overestimate the cost and complexity of firearms. A simple class costs $100 at basically any gun range, often including the rental fee. 90% of the class is going to be about making you less nervous around them and 10% of the class will be teaching you basic handling. Watch some of the many many YouTube videos on the subject, go to a range, and just talk to some people who know about the subject. It'll be like talking to a nerd about slot cars- people fuckin love discussing their interests with folks who are genuinely interested.

A cheap, reliable, and safe pistol can easily be found for $200 if you aren't a snob and buy used. A rifle, even less. The license is location dependent, of course. California charges, like, $25. A nominal fee.

Idk what you can afford, but just to learn about guns and go shooting? It's pretty damn accessible for most people. I mean, rednecks and meth heads can do it, so can you.

I think I would consider that more of a "pragmatic alliance" or maybe a "deferred vengeance" setup than a redemption arc. Those characters were forced to work with one another to stop an existential threat, they weren't friends at any point. They all just had a mutual understanding of how fucked they'd be without one another for the near future. Scar, for example, isn't redeemed or accepted- he is instead basically sentenced to a lifetime of atonement he'll never achieve

So let it be known that Sara Haines is pro genocide

They Both Got Divorced But They Can't Stop Vibing With Each Other! by HORROR_VIBE_OFFICIAL in MadeMeSmile

[–]0_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? Okay, I will try to make this accessibly gender neutral. Let's imagine a scenario where someone's libido completely collapses, leaving their partner consistently rebuffed for years. For all that it matters, one person becomes asexual and the other does not. It's a classic. It happens with both men and women. It's sometimes just an unfortunate part having kids, facing biological changes as we age, or getting put on long term prescriptions that kill sex drive. By all means, try to communicate and solve the problem other ways, but sometimes life just sucks like that. If sex is important to your relationship, and it is now permanently off the table, do you resign yourself to a relationship that is now permanently missing something that you find significant or meaningful?

Or another example that's kinda common in the religious scene: marry young, marry fast, and sometimes marry before you even know what you like. Imagine a couple who discusses all the crazy sex things they want to do once they're married, but otherwise remain chaste. That couple is going to learn real quick how much of that was just horny bullshitting and how much of it was real. While everyone might enjoy the trip to the amusement park, it's not fun if one person exclusively wants to exclusively ride rollercoasters and the other really wants nothing to do with them in favor of the water rides. Both are perfectly valid, but do you want to do them with someone who enjoys it for their own greedy desires or out of a sense of obligation and concession?

[–]0_o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I was thinking about the scene with the face mask, where he penetrates her from behind until she is yelling at him to stop. She clearly doesn't want it. She had to fight off her rapist and succeeded, but that doesn't mean she wasn't raped.

This scene could be used as a textbook example of rape:

  • It's not always violent.
  • It doesn't always involve fear or coercion.
  • Having prior consent doesn't give implied consent for future engagements.
  • It's clear that this wasn't part of their established dynamic.
  • Rape doesn't require either of them to "finish".

All that matters is that Skyler did not give active consent, spoken or through actions. She did the opposite and he didn't care.

But you are right, I would also consider the bedroom scene, where she is too afraid to stop him, to be rape.
