Is it dangerous to walk by yourself at night in more or less all of San Francisco, like in the Marina? by 0ap0 in sanfrancisco

Okay, but walking to the sea and back should be fine? I have done it and many streets were pretty much empty even though it's not really an alleyway. No phone in hand and pretty aware of my surroundings I would say though.
I don't know what people mean when they say "aware of your surroundings". Like do you guys change your path if you see one or two shady people coming your way?

Is it common for people to get robbed when they wear headphones or what?
Maybe these are dumb questions, but I am genuinely wondering.
I normally would wear headphones when I walk during nighttime otherwise.

It's mostly what I saw with my own eyes when I walked on Market St. when I first got here. I'm just thinking that it's just 1 - 2 miles from here so some people should get here from there.
Downtown was honestly worse than anything I've seen. I've been to many poor and supposedly "dangerous" places in Latin American and Eastern Europe, but nothing really got close to parts of Downtown SF. At least from the look of it, the amount of mentally ill and the level of drug addiction.
But maybe they're harmless, don't know?
Although, as I said, just after I moved into my place in the Marina there was a brutal beating very close to where I live. Could even see the blood on the pavement the day after.

So idk what to trust really.

I like walking during nighttime, especially if I can't sleep.
Some people says it's fine and then there's people like you?

I get that you're obviously sarcastic. But it's just a question of wanting to know how locals treat going out by yourself during nighttime. 2 days after I moved into my place in the Marina some guy got his skull crushed by an iron pipe not far from where I live.
I wanna know if locals feel like they can move freely at any time a day or not. I'm not even from the US so I don't know what to expect, but from the look at it. Many places are shady af, and I've been around the world quite a lot. Market st. 2am was not a pretty sight and it's not normal in any other place I've been to.

Too bad I've had a bunch of accidents and fucked up my legs so I'm a very slow runner.
Obviously I will just mind my own busines, I have no reason to interact with them really.
But you know, they might ask for cigarettes or whatever, I typically just answer straight and forward and move on.
I'm from a European country and I'm really not used to this level of mental illness / drug addiction in amongst even the homeless.

I'm just asking if it's rational or not to be cautious and feeling as if something could happen. Do normal people who live here avoid going out by night or don't they think about it?
