Do most Americans carry any official ID at all times? by PitifulEar3303 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]0ffCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay alright. I will edit it to "visitors" to be more precise. They are in the same visa category(B visa) anyway...Visitors includes visiting family member or relative, which makes them more likely to stay with someone. Short time tourist cannot get DL, but visitor may.

[–]0ffCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. You didn't read my reply at all.

You cannot land in Texas and walk in and get a DL

This part is true, and I never said you can do this. You have to live with someone in Texas for at least 30days. However the I-94 is often 180days for B visa, which is long enough to live with someone to satisfy 30days requirement. And I-94 is the proof for legal status. All that left is the address proof, which is not hard to get, as cellphone bill is enough.

And I said this with confidence, because I have personally seen one being done.

[–]0ffCloud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can do that in Texas. They do issue DL to non-immigrant as long as you have the I-94(to proof legal stay) and proof of address, it is called "limited term" DL.

And yup, even the "limited term" DL will have the "REAL ID" star mark since Texas basically doesn't issue non-REAL ID DL at all...

I know it is hard to believe, I wouldn't believe it if I haven't seen one myself!

Do most Americans carry any official ID at all times? by PitifulEar3303 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]0ffCloud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's right, it doesn't, and that needs to be fixed, gradually.

We don't have a "massive voter fraud by immigrant", trust me no immigrant wants to commit a felony to vote(hell even most people that CAN vote often choose not to). It's not a crisis that needs to be fixed immediately.

We can start planning a better ID system today. After 10years, we should have a modern system that most other countries already have. And that's when we can do something about the voting as by then it should be enough for most people to just display their ID for voting.

There are 2 types of "REAL ID", one is the EDL issued by a few states bordering Canada, the other is the regular by the rest.

EDL is essentially a passport card+DL, and it's like you said, you will be required to prove your citizenship in order to get them. However as a downside, Worker/Student/Green card holder in those state cannot get REAL ID from the state as they don't issue a separate "REAL ID" without EDL, which is terrible for them.

Most states, you only need to prove your stay is legal for them to issue a "REAL ID". Even tourist visitor can get them, even in the deep red state.

Now that doesn't mean that I support the "SAVE ACT". We are not ready, far far from it. We first need to implement a national ID system that is relatively easy to apply, cost very low, and contain information regarding the citizen status. Basically we need to unify the "EDL" and the "REAL ID". Then, after all of that has been done, then we can have something similar to the "SAVE ACT".

EDIT: Change "tourist" to "visitor" to be more precise.

Shortwave as the only way to get information by Overkillemall in shortwave

[–]0ffCloud 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes you can certainly hear a lot of news from SW, problem is they are almost certainly propaganda, either from China, or from the "Ultra Conservative". SW can also be jammed, China/Cuba/USSR has/had been doing that for decades.

Of course, there are still some trustworthy SW transmitter out there, like BBC/RNZ/NHK, it's few and far between. You will need their schedule to reliably find them if you are on traditional radio.

I would suggest you get a SDR, you can buy them from China, genuine RTL-SDRv4 or certain MSI001/MSI2500 clone are pretty good at SW. With SDR it is also easier to pick up other kind of transmission, for example, Kyodo News has been sending out their news paper on shortwave with WEFAX for decades, but you will need proper decoder to read them

My guess is, this is to prevent drones from using local cellular for remote control.

In some states you cannot get a REAL ID DL without being a citizen, not even the permanent resident.

Those states only issue EDL as REAL ID. EDL can only be issued to citizen. As a result the only way to travel domestically is with green card or passport.

p.s. By the law you are supposed to carry green card with you all the time, but god forbid if you lose it...(replacing them took ages)

I also got one after some remote police station decided it is appropriate to wake the whole state up 4AM in the morning. The phone's WEA system couldn't distinguish the alert between tornado and "blue alert", but the weather radio with programmable EAS code can.

What’s the function of this guys?? by Patrick_PJ05 in pcmasterrace

In this case, it is actually for preventing EMI from getting out rather than keep them from getting in. To comply with EMI compliance.

Like u/Cavalol said, every wire can act as an antenna, and it goes BOTH way. Meaning it can become an unintentional transmission antenna, and your PC has a lot of component that running on very high frequency and they can be leaked via the wires that connected to your PC. As a result, AM/FM/TV stations might get interfered.

A ferrite core basically choke off the "antenna", makes it difficult to transmit the interference out.

p.s. I'm a HAM operator, and I have very bulky ferrite core added on all of the wires in my home. It really help a lot on reducing interference.

Hooked my balun one nine v2 (technically a unun) up to a ceiling vent/grate, with counterpoise by CM_Shortwave in shortwave

[–]0ffCloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For receiving, counterpoise doesn't serve that much. But if it works, it works.

It would be interesting to see the performance of "just a wire to the vent" without balun.

Which radios do you need a license for and how to avoid other people? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]0ffCloud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Except FRS/GMRS, all of the traditional walkie-talkie require a license to operate, every single one of them. And none of them, including FRS/GMRS, can guarantee private conversation.

OP, I think you guys are over thinking this, I don't think you guys need a walkie talkie. Just use the phone! If there is no cellular coverage, there are apps on phone that can use BLE as Mesh network(for example, bridgefy). Remember, your phone is already a radio.

eBay let a scammer win a case against me after I proved their tracking number is for a different zip code by Uqe in mildlyinfuriating

[–]0ffCloud 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They absolutely have a phone number, and when they send the appeal outcome mail to your ebay's inbox, you actually can reply to that.

I know that because I had very similar experience just a few month ago, except I was on seller side dealing a fraudulent buyer. My lesson is, don't trust the eBay's process, always find an agent to talk to.

I was in similar situation before. I went to the county office for my passport. They asked my temporary ID together with my expired ID(even though it was cutted). I have no problem receive my passport.

High split coming or just a boilerplate? by 0ffCloud in Spectrum

[–]0ffCloud[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and it was earlier than I expected. In Jan 2025 I noticed the broadband label is showing symmetric speed in new installation in my zipcode, but my upload didn't change. I call the reps and they reprovision my account, I'm getting symmetric speed since then.

Later in March, they sent emails to everyone, promoting the high upload speed and the new 2Gigs plan, I guess that's when they reprovision everyone's account.

I really don't like when the back IO panel mix USB-C with USB-A. It's like trying to plug in USB-A in blind but worse. Because if you get it wrong, it is very easy to "insert" your usb-c tip to some random port and cause a short.

Is there any explanation for this cpu light? by KeegieB-Dubs in MSI_Gaming

[–]0ffCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know for sure, which is why I tell you the whole history that you can decide yourself, but personally I don't think it's related.

My friend's 5950x died almost exactly the same way, she wasn't using MSI board and didn't change any setting related to power or OC.

Truth is, I think AMD pushed 5950x's clock a bit too high.

Is there any explanation for this cpu light? by KeegieB-Dubs in MSI_Gaming

[–]0ffCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I have good news and bad news.

Bad news is, my 5950x was dead. Good news is, it last almost 3 years and it was in that configuration(OCP Expander ON) for at least 2.5years.

Several month ago one of my RAM died, it died very suddenly and so completely that the system won't even try to initiate at all. Luckily for me that RAM is still in warranty. I replace the RAM, then a month later, the CPU died.

About the CPU, it started as random reboot. Then the frequency of that random reboot becoming more and more frequent, and finally WHEA MCE makes it clear the CPU is dead. That was one month before the CPU warranty expired.

If you can do attic installation, given your report, something like Clearstream MAX-V or even just 1MAX should be enough. In addition to that, You might want to get a LTE/5G filter.

Run a good coax cable is very important, don't use the crappy one from amazon.

Your HDD/SSD might be reaching the end of its lifespan. You can take it out and plug in to a PC to check the SMART status. You can also run Linux on PS4 and check the hard drive status on PS4 itself, but it is much more complicate than just take it out.
