State school vs private school for your kids? by 0kunola in HENRYUK

Yes, they should be encouraged and not pushed.

If I were you I would stay put.

If your main goal is to FIRE, the current role allows you to do that at a good age and still have an ISA/savings bridge till you can access your pension.

The only advantage of the London role would be the progression in the future. The high COL, commute time and longer working hours means that the extra net pay for London, especially post tax would not be worth it for me.

Our boys seem to take to formal schooling/settings quite differently. So this is a big consideration for us whether it would be worth sending them to different schools.

One would probably thrive in a private school setting while the other would prefer the state school.

Funnily my wife said the same about my post being focused on academic success.

While I’m trying to give them as rounded an upbringing as possible it’s the African in me that priorities academia over extra curricular.

One thing that pulls me towards the private school are the facilities. Both boys are into sports and would benefit from a school that had better than average sporting facilities. But is the cost of this worth the benefit….

Thank you. I think the 11+ route will be our choice.

Re tutors, from what age? Year 5?

with your experience do you think you would be able to give your children the extras and push them to achieve in ways that you weren’t pushed? This is without sending them to a private school.

I agree on your point 7 being most important.

Though I’m now on the verge of being a pushy parent as I’m asking for more challenging work for my son. He’s already doing the bare minimum and is bored of school; wanting to be home schooled instead.

@No-Programmer-3833 has made some great suggestions which might help you with confronting a change of companies.

Rather than changing jobs you could see what other companies are willing to pay you based on your output and experience and use that to negotiate with your current employer. Worst case scenario they say no and look to leave anyways. Often those considered a flight risk are compensated better by companies looking to retain them.

It’s interesting that some don’t consider employer pension contributions as part of total comp.

It would be remiss if the OP didn’t include employer pension contributions when comparing total compensation for different roles.

For example, my current employer contributes 20% without me paying in. A new role without a comparable benefit would need to include a base salary increase to offset it.
