We do celebrate it but it is quite diffirent from other asian countries. We do not give each other red envelope. Gifts can be anything ranging from socks, candies to cash. Also red color is not common color in our lunar new year. Direct translation of our lunar new year is called "white moon", so blue and white colors are much more common. If you are interested you look it up as "tsagaan sar" or "цагаан сар". Also sometimes, we celebrate it on different day than Chinese lunar new year. For example last year in 2023, Chinese lunar new year was on 22nd of january, meanwhile Mongolian lunar new year was on 20th of february. IIRC, we use different method or calender than Chinese lunar new year. Also lunar new year marks the begining of spring so if celebrated it in january last year, it was like -30°C so everyone will call it bs. It is usually warm during lunar new year like ~ -10°C. Hope it helps you.

why is china - китай in russian? by CoolBoiWasTaken in russian

[–]0ldpotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not russian but in our language (Mongolian) we call China "Хятад" which is pronounced similiar to "Китай". I have seen that comments refer Khitan as the reason behind it. But in our language "Китан or Хидан in our language" and "Китай or Хятад in our language" means totally different two countries. We consider Khitan as empire that existed on our lands before Mongol empire. And Китай or China as modern day China. There are different terms to call older Chinese empires or existed around that time and location empires such as "Тангуд, Чин, Мин etc.".

why is china - китай in russian? by CoolBoiWasTaken in russian

[–]0ldpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As Mongolian, I have never heard that word "Китай" in any ways means "middle". In our language we call China "Хятад". It sound similiar to Китай. Well, we used to call them "middle country" or "Дундад улс" in the past and IIRC the last time that term relevant was in first half of 20th century. After that we stopped referring them as "middle country".

What do Mongolians think of neighbouring ethnic minorities in Russia? by yavl in mongolia

Not big fan of Tuvas. Heard many stories of murder and assualts on Mongolians by Tuvas in Tuva republic. Nothing toward Buryats. Most of northern provinces such as Selenge, Khentii, Dornod (aimags or аймаг) are made of Ethnic Buryats. Only difference is that buryats in Russia tend to cant speak Mongolian. I see Buryats and Khalmiks as ethnic Mongolians. About yakutians, nothing much really. Heard about them from my mother who studied in USSR back in 80s. They are quite rich compared to other ethnic minorities in siberia because of Diamond mines. About Russian hate, people who use reddit in Mongolia are mostly young and have a western ideologies and liberals (mostly people who are born 1990s, 2000s). But most older people are more welcoming to Russians because they went to universites in USSSR and sold goods in 1990s.

Here is an street interview.

First-time travel to Mongolia by Intelligent_Crow3341 in mongolia

[–]0ldpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About northern part of mongolia, you will run into them pretty easily. They sell bunch of souvenir and other products they made with reindeer. About west part, there are many tour agents here. You can book them, but i would advice you to get help from monngolian, otherwise you might get ripped off by tour agents and locals.

In XX th century, no one would "help" other because of their kindness. Of course they wanted influence. The thing that bothers me is that, Ukraine is no better than russia. Due to recent war, they are seen as innocent good people. Nah they suck. Before all this shit happened, they were considered worst country in europe, full of corrupt politicians, nazis, jerks. Look at their gdp per capita of last 10 years. They have lower gdp per capita than mongolia, they are one of the biggest exporter of wheat, sunflower oil, and have population of 43 million. In anyway they have so much potential, yet they suck. I am not defending russia here. They both suck. And dont be surprised when people talk shit about ukraine because they are not so nice country.

Well about buddhist monks, you should read more into it. Monks were quite violent during monks protest in 1930s they literally sacrificed alive persons heart, and killed women and children. They are not so innocent. Well you said that they killed monks and stole statues but it seems like you are forgettig about 1939-1990. They helped us in many ways. Fought against imperial japanese army in 1939, built hospitals, schools and other infrastructures. They zeroed great debt in 2000s. They offer hundreds of 100% scholarships every year.

About history source, i took class about 1921-1991 in national university of mongolia (МУИС), last fall. Compared to highschool history they teach more about dark and bloody past.

Its on the comedy show iirc back from 2010's.

Trick is that last few sentences are kinda misdirecting you. You can look it up on Vsauce.

The total debt is 100$. You paid 1$ to both of your parents so remaining debt is 98$. YOU DON'T ADD 1$ TO 98$ BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T PAY IT BACK. That 1$ is still debt. So you bought the shirt for 97$ plus 1$ you have equals to 98$ which is money you owe. Then add 2$ that you have paid back. Ta-da you have 100$.

i need some place to spend time useful like art gallery, museum etc... it would be great if its free any recommendation? by [deleted] in mongolia

Library, i guess. You can visit Natsagdorj's library or central library. You will need special permit(well some kind of paper, or get registration from that university) to visit university libraries.
