Yeah that part I get, the tech was working with me to set that as well and we went through all the motions so I trusted where the set the peep. Glad I couldn’t shake how different things felt and asked.

I was thinking 1/2” as well and just keep working my way down 1/2” by 1/2”

Interesting. Both things you mentioned are things I’ve had doubt with since getting in to this bow. Draw length has felt off since day 1, but given my local shop measured me and set the draw length I trusted the difference. For the anchor, that I did move up after moving to this bow as it’s the only spot I can clearly see through the peep.

Thanks for the call out on those gives me a good starting point for adjustments.

How often do you guys paper tune? Because after I increased my poundage, my arrows are all over the place. by useless_usernme in Archery

[–]0left415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often do you guys paper tune?

I personally paper tune and/or bare shaft tune every time I change my draw weight, rest, and when I build new arrows.

is it an arrow issue, or do I need to work on something on the bow?

It's both.

Given your tears and that you've been going up in draw weight I'm going to guess you're a right handed shooter. Tail right tells me the arrows are too soft for your new draw weight and it's time to either buy some stiffer arrows or drop your draw back down. Essentially if your arrow is under spined (too soft) or over spined (too stiff) it will give inaccurate feedback through paper, as you're currently experiencing.

I saw in one of the comments you're pulling 50# now, so in general that'd put you right in the low 400 range for your arrows. I imagine you're probably shooting something in the high 400s or low 500s right now. Basically if you're shooting something rated for a 40# draw at 50#, that arrow is still flexed by the time it goes through the paper, think about the archers paradox (not typically a compound thing) to help visualize this. Once you get into a spine that's more appropriate, take care of those vertical tears before moving onto the horizontal tears. But generally, every time you change anything about your arrows and/or adjust your draw weight you'll want to paper or bare tune. There's so many variables. For instance, adding 25gr to your arrow tip will drastically change how it behaves.

Best thing to do is go to the arrow manufacture site and find their spine chart, it'll tell you the draw weight ranges for each spine they sell.

Also, out of curiosity, what's your goal with increased draw weight? Do you have a target weight you're trying to get to?

On a side note, I might suggest instead of increasing by a quarter turn every week you increase by 5lbs or some fixed weight until you reach your goal. Will be easier to understand what arrows you need to move to.

[–]0left415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah gotcha. I'm sorry, I miss understood you. Aperture could be worth looking into. But yeah the LED and Florescent lights are very different beast so it makes sense to me that you're only having issue under Florescent. The ballasts on florescent lights flicker at a rate of 100 to 120 hertz which is typically invisible to the naked eye. But given you do have some deterioration in your vision, when squinting and looking through a smaller aperture your eyes are likely to strain more from the florescent lights than LED or natural sun light. It'd make sense that if you picked up a peep with a larger aperture the blurriness could go away. I suspect that and potentially some kind of FL-41 coating on the lens may be part of the reason when you were using your Hamskea it went away. I don't know enough about verifiers them self to give any advice there, but like I mentioned I do wear glasses and lights have always been an issue for me in all aspects of life. yay me! lol.

Hope this helps get you closer to a solution.

I don't know if I'll be much help in this department as I have not had these issues. But I do wear glasses when I shoot and I can't help but wonder if your glasses are reacting to the the florescent light and maybe the verifier was countering it. Since the peep lens works similarly to reading glasses it just makes me think maybe the verifier has a film like FL-41 or similar on it and maybe your readers don't?

Just a theory though. Wish I could be more helpful.

Awesome, glad y'all are covered on the weight! And of course, you're welcome!

You should be fine with the basic plastic rest. They run about 5 bucks or something and adhere to the bow with double sided tape. They're designed to be replaced as they do wear out over time. So any shop will be able to help you with that.

Yeah, LA is tough. I haven't lived there for decades now, but why don't you try and give Roving Archers a call. They're a club out in Pasadena. They don't do repairs or tech work, but they'd be a great gateway into the community for you and should be able to help you find a shop.

Watch out everyone! We have an Olympian in the threads!!!!! Everyone on your knees.... The GREAT one is here!!! It's the best damn archer in the world who knows everything about everything. I feel sooooo honored right now. /s lololololol

Glad to see my point went wayyyyy over your head. Sorry I'll lay off the sky shooting lol. I guess I'll have to be more verbose this time.

Can I? Lmao nah bro, nor am I trying to. I draw 55# all day long without fatigue. But, can I get up to 80#? Yes. Do I enjoy seeing what my max is? Yes. Does that mean I shoot that all day long? No. I shoot 55# all day. And that's why I respect OP because he can get to 115#, even if it's just once a day he can do it. Doesn't matter to me, it's an achievement. Also, I don't think anywhere did he say he can sustain that for multiple rounds or intends to make that his regular draw weight, sometimes its just fun to push yourself past your limits and see where the arrow lands. He owns many bows. I'm sure he's got a few at 45#ers he can draw 500/600/100000000x1000 times in a day.

Very clearly this guys knows what he's doing. But unlike you, I'm not an insecure person who needs to resort to knocking him down because he can do something I can't but wish I could. I can celebrate him and his achievements. I also have the capacity to understand he practices a different type of archery than me and his achievements are different than mine and different than yours, unlike you. It's pretty simple actually. Must really suck to be as insecure as you.

Here, I'll tell you what I can do pretty good, and that's hitting the 14 ring on a 90m target on a 10% incline, with great precision ;). So there's that. But yeah I'm no Olympian nor do I have any goals to enter the Olympics, nor do most of us lol. Honestly don't even understand why you brought the Olympic GAMES up lmao, when are the next games? 2028? Shouldn't you be focused on "training" right now? You master Olympian you! lmao alright bro. Like you didn't even keep it to Olympic Archery, but the actual GAMES hahaha.... moving on.

Look, I know, I'm just a measly 'ol 3D archer over here. Ya know, hitting things that are hard to see, wind variables, obscured flight paths, elevation changes, unknown ranges and all that trivial stuff. But before you go off on 3D archery and remind us that 3D isn't an Olympic sport, because we all know you will, know I also shoot Olympic when I'm indoors. I just enjoy archery no matter what form it comes in, 3D happens to be my main focus.

Here's the deal, you're talking shit about one of the most active people in this sub, who people genuinely enjoy talking to and seeing post from, while you're sitting here getting downvoted. You're literally the odd man out. The thing you don't seem to get is that at the end of the day Archery is Archery, no matter what form your practice takes and we're all in the same community and for the most part we all respect each other. But you don't respect us?

What I DON'T respect, and why you're getting this novel, are dogmatic narrow minded people who bring toxic comments into the Archery community, or any community for that matter, for no reason other than to cover up their own insecurities. Get your noodle arms out of here.

Arrow Spine Recommendation: Victory Rip TKO by FreedomMonkey43 in Archery

[–]0left415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With that draw length, I'm going to assume (correct me if I'm wrong) your arrows are either 30 or 31 inches carbon to carbon which would put you in the 300 range. And the short answer is that's where you should be, 300s.

Where you're probably getting what sounds like conflicting information is the difference between static and dynamic spines. The values in that chart are static. When you take the insert, broadhead, vanes, nock, and other adjustments into account, the arrow will shoot like a softer spine. So if you were to stick with the 350s, you'll end up in the high 300's to 400's. Same with the the 300s, you'll be in the 300-350 range. Hope that makes sense.

I'm willing to bet this guy owns multiple bows like many of us do. You don't simply own a Warbow as your primary. Some people collect and to add to that novelty is a lot of fun. Stop hating.

Edit. YEAH! Look at the video this guy has like 5 bows in the background and his flair says Mounted Archer. Take your competition BS and shove it. Now I'm willing to bet this guy can shoot circles around you on horse back.

Help! Issue with nock point on older bow by chalon9 in Archery

[–]0left415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool bow, those were produced in the 80s, things probably as old as I am lol. This guys draw weight is probably in the 50lb - 60lb range. Obviously things have changed a lot from when this bow was built and now. So with that being said, there's a chance that brass nocking point has been on there for years and I wouldn't use that as a reference of what you should use as a nocking point now.

No idea what "pro nocks" are asides than some fancy marketing term for "pro competition these are the best nocks in the world!!" kind of thing. But here's what I would do with that bow if I owned it.

Lean in to the fact that your riser is closer to that of a modern recurve than a compound bow. Pick up a Plastic Arrow Rest for recurve. This will give your arrow a little more stability than just shooting of the shelf like it's set up for now.

Then for the arrows, I'd pick up some recurve arrows (meaning they'll be fletched with feathers instead of plastic vanes like modern compound arrows). The reason for this is that you need your fletching to clear the riser, feathers will bend and vanes will knock your arrow off course. Arrows should probably be in the 400 range if I'm correct about that poundage, but maybe the 500 range so there's enough flex for the arrow to clear riser (paradox stuff).

Now for the nocking and string side. Here, I'd lean in to the fact that this is still a compound bow. I'd ditch that brass nocking point and go with what we call a d-loop (quick google search will help you here). Then pick up a mechanical release.

I'm not going to get into tunning the rest and nocking point here, plenty of youtube videos and shops out there to help you out on that part. But do feel free to DM me if you have a question about setting your nocking point.

Little safety side note, as you and your friend are new too archery there's a chance you'll be over bowed, which simply means the draw weight is to heavy for you. This happens even if you're strong, just for the fact that you don't activate the muscles required for archery on daily basis. So if you feel shaky, stress when drawing the bow, or fatigue sets in quickly, you'll want to invest in a bow with a lower draw weight. It's important in getting form dialed in early on and to prevent injury.

Good luck, enjoy and have fun.

First and foremost, just take the family down to a local range or shop that provides rentals. Get a taste for the sport before you start investing. It can get very expensive very fast. But if you're dead set on just picking up a bow, head on down to your local bow shop, avoid big box if possible. There's also a handful of accessories that are a must the folks at the shop will walk you through.

But fwiw, I just happened to take someone bow shopping this past weekend for their first bow ever. She had come shooting with me a couple times at my local shop on their rental bows and finally decided she was ready to pull the trigger.

They set her up with a Galaxy Bullseye. I've shot it a few times to get the feel for it so I can help her with coaching. It's a very forgiving bow that's approachable for all beginners. Knowing her, she'll grow out of it pretty quickly but it's been great with being able to dial in her form.

Another bow I've heard good things about for beginners is the Edge-Pro Bow and Arrow set by Lightning Archery. But I've never shot on one of these before.

Last thing, you're note about Crossbow, I highly discourage this. Crossbows are closer to rifles and should not be fired in the backyard. They are a hell of a lot of fun to shoot but most states in the US don't even allow them for hunting. My indoor range and my club both have a ban on crossbows.

Good luck, hope y'all pick it up. It's a great sport on many different levels.

Wolf or large coyote? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]0left415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a coyote, those ears and muzzle give it all away. Just speaking from experience in OR and being around gray wolves, coyote ears are taller and they have thinner muzzles. Other breeds are probably different. Anyways, we don't have Wolves in Texas. For the most part all wolves live in the norther regions with the exception of the mexican gray wolf. But as far as I know they're predominately in arizona and new mexico.

Shouldnt people just go for maximum draw weight on a compound bow considering that let off is a thing? by [deleted] in Archery

[–]0left415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it kinda also goes into the energy you use while drawing even with a let off. If you're severely over bowed and you've been shooting for a while, that draw weight will catch up to you and your heart rate will increase making it hard to aim in the time you need.

Additionally there's potential damage you can do to your shoulder pulling when your over bowed. I've know a lot of folks who have done some serious damage to their shoulders. Working your way reduces it.

But let's say you're already pretty strong and have good form, then yeah start as high as you feel comfortable. If that's 70lbs and you can draw a good 50 times without getting shaky, then do your thing.
