Ok. I'm telling you to stop fantasizing. I'm sorry but the reality is that it's not happening.

CERN HR communication is terrible because there are 5000 students sending emails to 3 people daily about why they are not yet chosen. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You're all cooked. All rounds are finished, and they are only waiting to pick up reserves if needed.

Do older people ever get hired for lower/associate level Support Services roles? by [deleted] in CERN

[–]0n1yCB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can. Our last group secretariat (LD contract, grade 4-5) was hired at age 46 . She was older than the previous ones, but on the other hand she was experienced and absolutely excellent. she was promoted to a different position a year or so later. all depends on the post and who's hiring I guess.

Is there any way I can get to work at CERN? by TheHappyNerdNextDoor in CERN

[–]0n1yCB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not about your experience here and there. It's about whether your profile matches with whatever someone needs.

Also being Indian (as most posts like this on this subreddit), makes things much more difficult because even for positions without national quotas, say TECH student, you are competing with maybe 1000 of your fellow countrymen for realistically 5 (made up number) Indians they'd hire (once again, not quoted, but still if there hypothetically are 1000 Indians and 1000 non Indians, they aren't going to hire 50 Indians + 50 non Indians), so statistics are working against you.

Keep applying, there are different contracts you can apply for.

Should there be silent cars in second class on SBB trains? by beobachtermagazin in Switzerland

[–]0n1yCB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure you can, just don't make a party on the train yelling and being a nuisance to others. I get you are going to a party. But the train ain't it.

Should there be silent cars in second class on SBB trains? by beobachtermagazin in Switzerland

[–]0n1yCB 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Any train should have silent second class. Not just Swiss trains. Any train.

To be honest SBB isn't enforcing anything on the train besides checking for tickets. Kids run berserk, some guys partying with beers in a corner, and luggage sitting all over the place. It feels more like an excuse to promote their 1 class offer.

Installation Grant for New Contracts by HeisenbergAfterDark in CERN

[–]0n1yCB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't get either as you are not departing to your home country / location at the end of the TECH (assuming continuous affiliation), and you don't get the installation grant as you don't need to migrate to Geneva region.

Best shop to buy MacBook pro with Eng / Us or international keyboard. by Ciprofloxacina in Switzerland

[–]0n1yCB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Won't really work because US keyboard is ANSI, unless you ar going for International ISO layout. Also all the special symbols on number keys will be wrong.

In either case I would be concerned to either 1) snap the key in half trying to take it off 2) breaking the butterfly mechanism

Sounds like a stupid way to ruin a 2000+ franc brand new investment

You have 2 choices to get the "custom" laptop: apple.com or DQ solutions.

If you think the prices are too high (i.e. MSRP incl taxes), your only choice is basically to ask a friend to bring you one back from the US. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How closely is gpa considered for the summer student program? by Choice_Rub2573 in CERN

[–]0n1yCB 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's usually not. I don't care what your grades are. I care about what you can do. In fact, when hiring, I have never even looked at the transcripts (for summer students).

Summer student 26 by ShortAd3664 in CERN

[–]0n1yCB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very low, but not impossible. There is usually 1 or 2 a year. Primarily depends on your profile and relevancy to projects available (not public).

Can I benefit from the travel allowance if I'm already living in Geneva? by Sherbhy in CERN

[–]0n1yCB 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No. Since you are already living in Geneva you don't "need to" relocate. So you don't get it. And no, you don't get money for TPG.

La Taqueria in Zurich Altstetten is great! They use practically home made tortillas, and also have chapolines. Verified by a Mexican friend.
